Wendell Green Jr. leads War Ready to first-round win at ‘The Basketball Tournament’

Green Jr led the way with 22 points as War Ready defeated the “D2 Waymakers” 80-72 in overtime.

For the fourth summer in a row, a basketball team full of former Auburn Tigers will be competing in the annual “TBT” Basketball Tournament.

While the team, fittingly named “War Ready”, hasn’t produced good results in tournaments past, this summer got off to a great start on Friday. Led by point guard [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag], War Ready picked up a win to open up the tournament by defeating the “D2 Waymakers” 80-72 in overtime.

The aforementioned 5-11 guard, who is still just 21 years of age led all scorers in the contest with 22 points. Green Jr. also added 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals in the overtime victory. 2019 NCAA Tournament darlings [autotag]Malik Dunbar[/autotag] and [autotag]J’Von McCormick[/autotag] were the only other former Tigers to score in double figures, scoring 12 and 14 points respectively. The duo shot an extremely impressive 12/16 (75%) from the field.

No other War Ready player scored more than 9 points. Former Tiger star [autotag]T.J Dunans[/autotag] specifically had a rough go of it. Despite bringing the most experience to the squad, Dunans did not score a point and committed 4 turnovers.

It seems like War Ready will go as far in The Basketball Tournament as the trio of Green Jr., Dunbar, and McCormick take them. While the opening night win is a step in the right direction, the former Tigers have a rough contest up next against No. 1 seed “Herd That”, a team full of Marshall alumni.

We’ll see if the team of Auburn Alumni can pull of the upset when the round of 32 game tips off Sunday at 12 PM CST on Fox Sports 2.

Team War Ready unable to hang close with The Ville in TBT opening round

Team War Ready looks to stay alive in the TBT tournament after dropping their first game.

In the opening round of TBT, [autotag]Team War Ready[/autotag] fell 91-67 at the hands of The Ville.

The game was even in the beginning but The Ville pulled away towards the end of the first period and Team War Ready was never able to catch up.

Team War Ready shot 26-56 (46%) from the field, 11-12 (91%) from the free-throw line, and 4-21 (19%) from beyond the arch.

[autotag]Shaun Willett[/autotag] led the team in scoring with 17 points and in assists with three. [autotag]Horace Spencer[/autotag] led the team in rebounds with 10.

The Ville shot 32-65 (49%) from the field, 18-28 (64%) from the free-throw line, and 9-34 (26%) from three-point range.

Russ Smith led the team in scoring with 21 points. Chinanu Onuaku led the team in rebounds with eight. Peyton Siva led the team in assists with seven.

Other than free throws, the only statistical category Team War Ready led in was blocks. The Tigers alumni team produced one block to the Cardinals’ zero.

The TBT is a single-elimination tournament so Team War Ready’s run has come to an end. The Ville will take on the Jackson TN Underdogs in the second round. The game is scheduled for Thursday at 7:00 p.m. CT.
