Lions set Ford Field single-game rushing mark in Week 17 win over the Bears

The Lions ran for 265 yards on 39 carries in the win over the Bears, the most Detroit has had in a home game since 1978

It’s always noteworthy when the Detroit Lions accomplish something in the rushing offense category that trumps the entire Barry Sanders era with the team. In Sunday’s 41-10 win over the Chicago Bears, the Lions ran for more yards in a home game than they ever did in Sanders’ 11 Hall of Fame seasons in Detroit.

The Lions hit 265 rushing yards in the win. Led by Jamaal Williams racking up 144 yards on 22 carries, Detroit averaged 6.8 yards per carry on 39 attempts. It was the most rushing yards by the Lions in a home game since 1978, when the team played at the Pontiac Silverdome. In Week 8 of 1978, Detroit ran for 273 yards on 39 carries in a 31-14 win over the Chargers. Dexter Bussey and Horace King each topped 90 rushing yards and WR Freddie Scott chipped in 28 of his own.

The most the Lions ever ran for in a single game in the Sanders era (1989-99) came in Week 8 in 1991 at Minnesota. Sanders hit 220 on his own and the Lions gashed the Vikings for 267 yards on 38 carries.

Williams ran for 144 and D’Andre Swift charged for 78 yards on 11 carries of his own. Rookie WR Jameson Williams blazed for 40 yards on his only carry. The Lions technically hit 268 but lost three total yards when backup QB Nate Sudfeld knelt down in three victory formation plays at the end of the game.

Justin Jefferson sets team record on opening touchdown drive

The latest of many team records for the star receiver

On the Minnesota Vikings opening drive, wide receiver Justin Jefferson set a Vikings team record for the most receptions in the first three years of a career. On his third reception of the day, he surpassed Hall of Famer Randy Moss who held the record with 226 receptions.

The drive was really good for Jefferson. He was involved early and often with four receptions for 55 yards. He was hit twice on out breaking routes where he gained separation with relative ease by using shoulder fakes and explosive cuts.

He almost scored on his final catch of the drive, but was stopped just short. Dalvin Cook took it in from one yard out to take a 7-0 lead.

This isn’t the first, nor will it be the last team record that Jefferson breaks in a Vikings uniform.

Pick Play: Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs closing in on franchise interception record

After not grabbing an interception since Week 10, Trevon Diggs inches one step closer to team record with his ninth interception in Week 13. | From @StarConscience

Second-year cornerback Trevon Diggs started the 2021 season on an unbelievable streak when it came to taking the ball away. He recorded an interception in each of the first six games (seven total) and ran two back for touchdowns. He cooled off in the next five only snagging one interception, but it was only a matter of time before he got another.

The Dallas Cowboys faced the New Orleans Saints on Thursday who started Taysom Hill at quarterback. He had only attempted eight passes all season long. However, he threw the ball 41 times against the Cowboys, and with just under five minutes left in the fourth quarter Hill was intercepted by Diggs near the sideline giving him his league-leading ninth of the season as a part of a four-interception night for the Cowboys defense.

With his ninth interception, Diggs has the third-most in a single season in Cowboys history behind Mel Renfro who had 10 in 1969, and Everson Walls who amassed 11 in 1981. Diggs joined Walls on Thursday night as the only players in Cowboys history to record at least nine interceptions in the first 12 games of a season. In 1981, Walls had 10 through 12 games.

Diggs is on pace for 13 interceptions which would be the second-most all-time behind Dick “Night Train” Lane who recorded 14 in 1952. Also, his 14 passes defended this season, which equals his total from his rookie year in 2020, is tied for second in the NFL with Marshon Lattimore of the Saints, just two behind J.C. Jackson of the New England Patriots.

The former second-round pick has played in 24 career games and amassed 12 interceptions, meaning he gets one every two games. What’s more impressive about it is that he didn’t record an interception until Week 8 of last season which means his 12 career interceptions have come in a 17-game span.

Diggs spoke after the Cowboys win against the Saints about how it feels being a key contributor to what the team does defensively.

“It feels good,” Diggs said. “It’s a blessing, just going out there and competing and to make the plays I need to make to help this team win.”

Regardless of how many interceptions he ends up with Diggs has become one of the best ball-hawking corners in the NFL and is one of the leading candidates for Defensive Player of the Year in 2021.

Myles Garrett ties Browns single-season sack record in just 12 games

Garrett tied the record by sacking Lamar Jackson on the first drive of the Browns’ 12th game

Myles Garrett was the NFL’s leader in sacks entering Week 12. The Browns defensive end quickly added to his tally in Sunday night’s matchup with the Baltimore Ravens. In the process, Garrett etched his name in the Browns record book.

Garrett tied the team’s single-season sack record when he blasted through three Baltimore blockers to chase down QB Lamar Jackson on the Ravens’ first drive. It was his 14th sack of the season. That ties Reggie Camp for the most sacks in Browns history in a single season.

It took Camp 16 games to hit 14 sacks back in 1984, a year where Clay Matthews also bagged 12 sacks while rushing from the other side. Garrett hit it in the first drive of the Browns’ 12th game.

Myles Garrett sets team sack record, closing in on top five in Browns history

Garrett broke a team record and now has his path set on some of the all-time greats in Browns history. He now sits 3.5 behind one of the greats for sixth in Cleveland sack totals:

The story of the Cleveland Browns victory over the Chicago Bears can be summed up in the graphic above of Myles Garrett. Seven tackles, 4.5 sacks, six quarterback hits and four tackles for loss in one game

Garrett had a full season of statistics for some players but did so in one Sunday afternoon.

With his big performance, Garrett vaulted to the top of the sacks leaderboard in the NFL through three weeks (with Monday Night Football still on tap). Just below Garrett on that list is Chandler Jones who racked up five sacks in Week 1 but has not gotten home since.

Garrett set the Browns single-game mark with his performance against the Bears:

With a fourth-quarter sack of Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields, Garrett set a new franchise single-game record with 4 1/2. The Browns’ previous single-game sack record was held by linebacker Andra Davis, who recorded four against the Kansas City Chiefs on Nov. 9, 2003.

While Jones’ five sacks and Garrett’s 4.5 sacks are impressive individual performances, they fall short of the NFL record seven sacks that Derrick Thomas put up against Seattle in 1990.

For Garrett, next up on the list of all-time Browns greats is Michael Dean Perry. Perry pulled down the quarterback 51.5 times in his Cleveland career. Garrett sits 3.5 sacks behind him and 12.5 sacks behind Paull Wiggin for fifth-most in team history.

Given Garrett’s play over the past couple of seasons, Bill Glass’ top mark of 77.5 should be within reach in a couple of years.

For now, Browns fans will celebrate this historic performance where the former number one overall pick took over a game and brought home a victory.

USA TODAY predicts Seahawks finish 2020 season with 9-7 record

Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports is now predicting the Seattle Seahawks finish the 2020 season with 9-7 record

[jwplayer QZopmiKN]

Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports is at it again, predicting how each team in the NFL will finish the 2020 season. In his 2.0 team record projection, Davis asserts the Seattle Seahawks will wrap up the year at 9-7 and with a wild-card spot in the playoffs.

“A team that excelled amid plenty of smoke and mirrors in 2019 – Seattle somehow won 11 times despite outscoring its opponents collectively by just seven points – should have a lot more smoke after acquiring Adams from the Jets,” Davis writes.

“Yet questions remain about the pass rush, O-line, a pair of running backs returning from serious injuries … not to mention an uninviting schedule,” Davis continues. “All five of the Seahawks’ non-divisional road games will take place in the Eastern time zone – forcing them to trek a league-high 29,000+ miles.”

Seattle is used to the long-haul travel and has become quite successful in early games. The Seahawks are also looking to front one of the more formidable defenses in the league with the revamped secondary.

Davis might have Seattle’s 2020 team record a little low this year – 10 or 11 wins seems a bit more reasonable for the Seahawks.
