Tennessee Titans 2020 season review: Defensive line

Taking a look back at the Titans’ defensive line from the 2020 season.

Despite the emergence of Jeffery Simmons as one of the more dominant young defensive players in the league, the Tennessee Titans’ defensive line as a unit was mostly underwhelming in 2020.

Outside of Simmons, none of Tennessee’s front line scared opposing offenses, especially once Jadeveon Clowney went down for the season with a knee injury.

Clowney may technically be considered an outside linebacker, but he is the epitome of a chess piece who can line up anywhere, as he displayed during his eight games. Despite not having any sacks while in the lineup, Clowney did have an impact on the team, especially for Simmons.

People tend to look at the numbers when it comes to Clowney’s production, and rightfully so, but his impact often goes beyond the traditional stat line. The South Carolina product has earned the respect of the league due to his game-wrecker reputation and that leads to consistently being one of the most double-teamed players when he’s healthy.

He was also ranked in the top-15 at his position in both quarterback hurries and hits prior to his injury. Once Clowney was gone, all that attention turned to Simmons, who started the year looking like a legitimate All-Pro candidate before eventually being relatively neutralized due to the inability for anyone else to make offenses pay for doubling and even triple-teaming Simmons.

Despite being given this extra attention, the former Mississippi State product was a force to be reckoned with throughout the season. Simmons finished with 49 total tackles, three tackles for loss, 14 QB hits, three sacks, one forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries.

Clearly the Titans’ young star was in a class of his own in 2020. However, both Simmons (83.9) and Clowney (74.9) were the two highest-graded players on the defensive line and were the only ones to grade over 70.

DaQuan Jones was the next highest-graded player on the defensive line with a respectable grade of 67.7. Jones was solid this season, but he may not have done enough to earn himself a new contract in Tennessee for 2021 and beyond.

The rest of the depth upfront, such as Jack Crawford, Teair Tart, Matt Dickerson and Larell Murchison, all had moments, but none of them truly made an impact on the season with the exception of Crawford, who was solid in spurts.

Tart also played well in moments, but they were few and far between and unfortunately his most memorable moment was when he stepped on guard Wyatt Teller during the team’s week 13 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

PFF was not generous to Tennessee’s depth pieces along the defensive line, as Crawford’s grade of 53.5 led the group, while the other three graded out in the 40’s.

5 Titans who could have an increased role in 2021

These five players could see an increased role for the Titans in 2021.

The Tennessee Titans will have some tough decisions to make with some of their own free agents in 2021, and they won’t have a lot of money to work with.

As it stands now, if the salary cap goes down to $176 million, which is the lowest it can go, Tennessee will be $7.3 million over, per Over the Cap.

Not only will that lead to the Titans letting some of their key free agents walk, but they will also have to make some cuts to free up more money.

With money tight and players sure to depart, Tennessee will no doubt look to cheaper alternatives to fill some holes. Here’s a look at five players who could fit the bill.

Titans activate Kristian Fulton from IR among 3 roster moves

Fulton hasn’t played in a game since Week 7.

The Tennessee Titans will be getting some reinforcements to their secondary ahead of the Week 15 game against the Detroit Lions, as the team announced it has activated Kristian Fulton from Injured Reserve.

The Titans’ 2020 second-round pick, Fulton hasn’t played in a game since Week 7. He’s totaled 15 tackles (13 solo, one for loss), one interception, one pass defensed and one sack in five games (two starts) this season.

Tennessee made two other roster moves on Tuesday, including activating defensive lineman Teair Tart from the suspended list back to the active roster and placing outside linebacker Tuzar Skipper on practice squad IR.

Tart was suspended for one game by the NFL for stepping on Cleveland Browns guard Wyatt Teller’s leg during the Titans’ Week 13 loss. Skipper suffered what appeared to be an elbow injury during the Week 14 contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Titans and Lions will kickoff at noon CT on Sunday.

Titans’ Adoree’ Jackson, Breon Borders ruled out for Week 14

Kristian Fulton could be activated on Saturday.

The Tennessee Titans will be without cornerbacks Adoree’ Jackson and Breon Border for the Week 14 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, head coach Mike Vrabel revealed after practice on Friday.

Jackson, who has yet to suit up in a game this season because of a knee injury, returned to practice this week and was able to get in a limited session on Wednesday and Thursday, but still isn’t ready to suit up. We’re waiting for the injury report to see what his Friday participation was.

The player filling in for Jackson, Borders, was on the injury report this week with a rib issue. His absence will leave the Titans’ secondary even more short-handed.

Rookie cornerback Kristian Fulton was designated to return from IR on November 24th but has yet to be activated. Vrabel said the team could do so on Saturday and still have Fulton play on Sunday.

If that happens, the Titans could deploy Fulton on the boundary in place of Borders. If not, we could see a lot of 2020 seventh-round pick Chris Jackson opposite Malcolm Butler, with Desmond King manning the slot.

Earlier in the day, it was revealed that defensive lineman Teair Tart’s one-game suspension was upheld by the NFL. Vrabel says that 2020 fifth-round pick Larrell Murchison will see action in order to help fill that hole. Murchson has been inactive for each of the past three games.

Titans DL Teair Tart’s appeal fails, will serve 1-game suspension

Tart’s infraction occurred during the Week 13 contest against the Browns.

Earlier this week we found out that Tennessee Titans defensive lineman Teair Tart had been suspended for one game by the NFL after he stepped on the leg of Cleveland Browns guard, Wyatt Teller.

Tart appealed his suspension, but per NFL Senior Vice President of Football and International Communications, Michael Signora, the punishment has been upheld and the rookie will miss the Week 14 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The infraction occurred during the second quarter of the Week 13 loss to the Browns, and based on the video evidence, it’s hard to say Tart didn’t do it on purpose.

On Thursday, head coach Mike Vrabel commented on the situation involving Tart and said he didn’t think the 6-foot-3, 290-pound lineman “did anything malicious” against the Browns.

A 2020 UDFA of the Titans, Tart has played in each of the team’s last five games, earning 22 or more snaps in three of them. His suspension is unfortunate, as he was playing well for Tennessee’s defense.

NFL suspends Titans DE Teair Tart for violation of unnecessary roughness, unsportsmanlike conduct rules

Teair Tart is set to to serve a one-game suspension after a violation of unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct rules.

The NFL officially announced on Monday that it had suspended Tennessee Titans defensive end Teair Tart for violating unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct rules.

Tart will miss one game after stepping on Cleveland Browns guard Wyatt Teller’s right knee. Tart was running back upfield from the pocket on the play, and Tart stepped on his knee.

The violation occurred with 8:25 remaining in the second quarter.

Tart is set to serve a one-game suspension, which he is reportedly expected to appeal. The appeal will likely be heard within the next couple days, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

If Tart loses the appeal, he’ll be eligible to return to Tennessee’s active roster on Dec. 14 after the Titans’ upcoming game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

There was room for Tart to have avoided this whole conundrum, as Broadway Sports Media’s John Glennon notes in his explanation of what happened on the play here:

Mike Vrabel: Titans who stepped up in Week 9 earned more snaps

Breon Borders, Teair Tart, Derick Roberson and Desmond King all made a significant impact in Week 9.

The Tennessee Titans put forth arguably their best defensive effort of the 2020 campaign thus far during the Week 9 win over the Chicago Bears, partly on the strength of impressive performances by some new faces.

With the Titans being short-handed on defense thanks to injuries and roster moves made during the week, players like Breon Borders, Derick Roberson, Desmond King and Teair Tart all stepped up in a big way.

As a result, Titans head coach Mike Vrabel said on Monday that each of those players have earned more snaps moving forward, according to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online:

“I think all those guys earned more opportunity against the Colts,” Vrabel said. “But it will be important that they don’t spend a whole lot of time in the batter’s box staring at the home run (and) they move on like we always do, whether we win or lose. Our whole focus is making sure these guys are building and trying to earn a larger role.”

Vrabel also expressed how King has already earned respect from the players and coaches after his outstanding debut that occurred after no full practices and only Zoom meetings and a walk-through:

“I think he earned the respect of a lot of people within our organization, our coaches and players and (GM) Jon (Robinson) just by being able to learn everything virtually, come in and have some communication and interaction with the players on Saturday and then going out there and having a lot of snaps and competing and doing a nice job,” Vrabel said of King, formerly with the Chargers. “When you love football, you find ways to do your job …. He’ll earn more snaps based on the job he did yesterday.”

When meeting with the media on Tuesday, Titans outside linebackers coach Shane Bowen had praise for Roberson, Tart and King, also:

The defense could have a new look to it once again in Week 10 if Adoree’ Jackson is able to return, but if not Tennessee should certainly give the aforementioned players more looks on Thursday against the Colts.
