Class of 2025 wide receiver Taz Williams impressed by Penn State on recent visit

Penn State football’s family atmosphere impressed a key wide receiver recruit on his recent visit to campus.

It’s no secret that, while Penn State fans are wanting this coaching staff to land elite talent across every position, all eyes are on what recruits wide receivers coach [autotag]Marques Hagans[/autotag] can pull in.

Based on the overall targets the second-year Nittany Lions coach is pursuing, he is clearly swinging for the fences in attempting to land some of the premier talents across the country.

With just one receiver commitment currently in the class, there is still plenty of work to be done for Hagans and [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] to overhaul their wideout room.

The good news is plenty of their top targets are still available, and they seem to be leading for two of them.

One player they would love to land is [autotag]Taz Williams[/autotag], who is playing high school football in the state of Texas.

Ranked as a four-star in 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, the Pittsburgh native is an explosive playmaker with the ball in his hands at 6-foot and 185 pounds.

This process won’t be an easy one to win for Penn State, but they put themselves in a fantastic spot coming out of his official visit this past weekend.

Williams spoke with Mike Roach of 247Sports about his experience coming out of that trip and he seemed very impressed by what took place. He said “it went better than I expected” calling attention to the family atmosphere within the program and the plan they laid out for him to play early and become an impact player. He enjoyed his time hanging out with the current players and loves Franklin and the staff he’s put together (subscription required).

Even though he’s originally from Pittsburgh, that’s not necessarily giving the Nittany Lions a leg up.

His recruitment has gone national, getting courted by SMU, Ohio State, and Texas A&M who he’s all previously visited, and Michigan, who he’s visiting this weekend.

According to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, they have the Wolverines as a heavy favorite to land him at 67.5 percent, but based on the feedback coming out of his trip to Happy Valley, Penn State has put themselves in a good spot to potentially win this one.

Williams will announce his decision on July 13 following the conclusion of all his official visits as that gives him and his family time to discuss everything before making his commitment.

Top Michigan football 2025 target sets commitment date

Feeling good about this one. #GoBlue

While he hasn’t been to campus yet for his official visit, things have been trending well for Michigan football with one of its top targets.

2025 Red Oak (Tx.) four-star wide receiver Taz Williams Jr. fits the mold of what the Wolverines are looking for at the position and is set to visit Ann Arbor in just a few short weeks, on June 21. Also planning to visit Penn State and Texas A&M before that, it appears that he’ll have his decision made as to where he’ll commit in short order.

Williams is set to announce his school of choice just a few weeks after his slate of visits concludes with July 13 being the date he’ll make his commitment.

According to his graphic, Williams is also considering SMU among his final contenders.

As for what he likes about Michigan football, Williams told WolverinesWire last week that the maize and blue see him as a redux of Roman Wilson.

“They see me as an outside-inside guy that can do it all,” Williams said. “It’s basically how they used Roman. That’s how I’d describe it, how they used Roman.  They used him outside-inside, they get him the ball, they try to get playmakers the ball. So they told me they’d get me the ball in different ways so I won’t get schemed by the defense – it will be easier. To get to the next level in the league, it makes you more marketable being able to play multiple positions – to play inside-outside, outside-in.”

As of current, there are no 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions indicating where he’ll end up but we did put him in our best-guess list of the 2025 class for Michigan football.

Taz Williams Jr. intrigued by becoming the next Roman Wilson with Michigan football

He’d be a great fit with #Michigan! #GoBlue

The Michigan football offense may be run-heavy, but it certainly still needs pass catchers to make the thing go. And the Wolverines have their eye on one player who fits the mold of receivers they’ve had over the past few years.

The pitch to 2025 Red Oak (Tx.) four-star wideout Taz Williams Jr. is that he would look a lot like Roman Wilson if he were to don the winged helmet. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound receiver is interested in finding out more about what the new-look maize and blue offense will be like when he comes to Ann Arbor for his June 21 official visit.

But he’s already got a strong interest in Michigan and he’s looking to build upon his pre-existing relationships there.

“It’s a lot of things. The head coach – the head coaching change. The offensive coach becoming the head coach now,” Williams told WolverinesWire. “I have a great relationship with the coaches and the new O.C. It’s crazy because me and him are from Pittsburgh, PA, so I just thought that was cool and that’s a good connection right there already. It’s increased my relationship with them. To have someone with the same hometown as me, that’s real.

“And I like the offense, also. The offensive coach – Coach (Kirk Campbell).”

In terms of being like Roman Wilson, what does that look like? How has Michigan pitched him?

According to Williams, he’s intrigued, because he knows that if the pitch becomes reality, it will certainly propel him to the professional ranks once his college career is done.

Williams did have official visits set up to Ohio State on May 31 and Alabama on June 14, according to 247Sports, but he says those are off the books. He’s only going to visit Texas A&M on June 6 and Penn State on June 14.

Ideally, he’ll make a commitment to his school of choice in late summer. But what is his criteria for his next school?

Primarily, he is steadfast in his choice of major, but also wants to make sure he fits the scheme offensively as well as has a good campus life once he arrives.

“I want to major in business and real estate development – I want to make sure I’m in a great area with that. And great connections with the real estate people,” Williams said. “Real estate, that’s real big and that connection is right there. Obviously, like I said before, how I fit in the offense. I want to be used in a great way and I want to be used in different ways, also. Just how campus life is, to be honest. Campus life and how I’d actually be as an actual student on campus as a student-athlete.”

Williams is rated the highest by Rivals, which has him listed as the No. 127 player in the country, regardless of position. There, he’s also the No. 23 wide receiver and No. 21 player in the state of Texas.

Here is what he had to say about his impending visits to Texas A&M and Penn State.

“Coach Wig and I have a great relationship already, since he was at Alabama. I really like the offense that Coach Klein and – he’s a great O.C. to be playing (for). Especially my position. Coach Elko, he has an open door policy, and I like that about the head coach. That’s something that’s on my list that I want from a head coach.”

“Like I said about Michigan, I fit into the offense. They just got a new O.C., he was at Kansas. And he’s a great O.C., too. He be dialing it up, airing it out. So just seeing where I fit in his scheme, his offense.”

Recruiting network predicts four-star receiver to Michigan

Need these guys. #GoBlue

Michigan recruiting has been quiet of late, especially for a team that just won the national title game.

Of course, having to replace your head coach and half of the position coaches doesn’t help, but it has been about three months since the last commitment. In addition, Michigan lost its top-ranked commit in the days following the national title game.

However, the Wolverines seem to have gained some momentum on the trail in recent days with a pair of targets trending their way. First, On3’s director of recruiting Chad Simmons put in a prediction for Michigan to land four-star receiver Taz Williams Jr. on Monday morning. Then 247Sports national recruiting analyst Allen Trieu put in a 247Sports crystal ball in favor of the Wolverines for four-star cornerback Dawayne Galloway later that day. Whew.

This article will focus on Taz Williams Jr., but you can read more about Galloway here.

Williams plays at Red Oak High School in Red Oak, Texas, and is listed at 6 feet and 181 pounds on the On3 website. He holds an industry ranking grade of 89.92, which makes him the 283rd highest-rated player in the country and the 39th highest receiver. Williams is reporting offers from powerhouses Ohio State, Texas,  LSU, Alabama and Georgia.

Michigan already has a highly sought quarterback committed in the 2025 class: Carter Smith. However, the Wolverines need to surround him with weapons. Michigan’s only other offensive commit is Eli Owens, but he projects more as a blocking tight end or fullback. A commitment from Williams Jr. would be huge. Dipping into the state of Texas for a highly recruited pass catcher is no easy task, and it would mark the first big win of the cycle for Ron Bellamy.

Michigan is expected to take three or four receivers in the 2024 class given the depth chart and recent transfer of Karmello English.

Michigan football makes top 10 for 2025 4-star wide receiver

This is the type of player #Michigan needs this cycle! #GoBlue

Michigan football is working to make a splash in recruiting under new head coach Sherrone Moore, and it appears the Wolverines are making some headway. Though Moore has yet to get any commitments since he was named the headman a month ago, there have been a few recruits who have turned their face toward Ann Arbor.

One such recruit is 2025 Red Oak (Tx.) four-star wide receiver Taz Williams Jr., who is listed at 6-foot, 185-pounds. He has offers from all of the heavy hitters across college football, but when it came time to drop his top 10, Michigan football was one that made the cut.

It will certainly be uphill climbing, however, given some of his other contenders. Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Penn State, Texas A&M, Florida State, Georgia Tech, SMU, and Baylor also made his top 10.

Williams is listed highest by Rivals, which has him as the No. 115 player in the country, regardless of position, as well as the No. 21 wide receiver in the country.

2025 4-Star WR Taz Williams will reportedly visit Texas A&M next month

It has been reported that 2025 4-star WR Taz Williams will visit College Station in early February.

Texas A&M and head coach Mike Elko hope to secure the first 2025 commit after hosting countless prospects the last two weekends, including four-star wide receiver Taz Williams out of Red Oak, Texas. Knowing that the 2024 season could be the last for several starting wide receivers, reloading at the position is an absolute must.

On Saturday, it was revealed that Williams and the Aggies are in good standing after his recent visit, but will have notable competion with the likes of Georgia Tech and Penn State, but according to his recently revealed visit scheudle, Texas A&M will be the last visit on Saturday, Feb 3, just a week after visiting the Nittany Lions on the Jan. 27, and his finishing up his visit Georgia Tech this weekend.

Finishing up the 2023 season on a very high note, Williams recorded 80 receptions, 1,251 yards and 14 touchdowns through the air, possessing the speed, quickness, and run after catch ability that has already awarded him nearly 50 offers so far.

According to 247Sports Composite, Williams is currently positioned as the 241st-ranked player in the 2025 cycle, the 29th-ranked wide receiver and the 40th-ranked player in Texas.

Two more 2025 4-Star wide receivers will make their way to College Station for Texas A&M’s junior day

2025 4-star wide receivers Adrian Wilson and Taz Williams wil reportedly make their way to College Station this weekend for junior day.

This weekend, Texas A&M and new head coach Mike Elko will host a long and talented list of 2025 prospects during the Aggies’ annual junior day, looking to solidify relationships ahead of the usual visiting blitz coming this summer.

According to Rivals’ Landyn Rosow, four-star wide receivers Adrian Wilson and Taz Williams will join the likes of 2025 wide receiver Kaliq Lockett, linebacker Kelvion Riggins, offensive tackle Michael Fasusi, and defensive lineman Xavier Ukponu during Saturday’s festivities, while Wilson remains the only player currently committed to a program (Oregon).

Seeing the noticeable trend, Elko and his staff know that adding offensive playmakers could inject a considerable momentum boost over the next six months, as we’ve already seen through the transfer portal after landing former Purdue Edge and 2023 Big Ten sack leader Nic Scourton to the mix next season.

Adrian Wilson, who is the 53rd-ranked player in the cycle (Rivals), recorded 60 receptions for 1,003 yards and 14 touchdowns during his 2023 junior campaign, while Taz Williams, ranked as the 114th-ranked player in the class (Rivals), hauled in 80 receptions, 1,251 yards and 14 scores through the air last season.
