Former Penn State football assistant lands at Air Force

One of James Franklin’s former assistant coaches is taking a job with a service academy

After Penn State and [autotag]Taylor Stubblefield[/autotag] parted ways back in January, his job as wide receivers coach was filled quickly. Two months later, the former Penn State assistant has now found his new home with a new coaching job.

Stubblefield is heading to Air Force for the exact position of Wide Receivers coach, according to The Athletic.

This will be his second stint at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs where he previously coached alongside their head coach Troy Calhoun. He had been there for the 2017 and 2018 seasons before heading to Miami (FL) and landing at Penn State.

Stubblefield left under murky circumstances back in January. At the time, [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] would only comment stating “as you guys know, I try to share as much as I possibly can with the media that I think is appropriate. I don’t necessarily think that is appropriate in this setting.”

Stubblefield did leave with a nice statement however stating “I’m proud of the kids whose names are etched in the Penn State record books. And finally, I am elated to have been part of a team that went 11-2, culminating in a Rose Bowl victory.”

His replacement was hired just days after Stubblefield’s departure and came in the form of Virginia wide receivers coach [autotag]Marques Hagans[/autotag]. Since his arrival, Franklin and Penn State have landed transfer wide receivers [autotag]Dante Cephas[/autotag] and [autotag]Malik McClain[/autotag] which will further his expectations.

Penn State defensive coach leaving for NFL job

Penn State is now searching for a new defensive assistant coach after a reported NFL departure

It looks as though Penn State head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] has a staff vacancy that needs to be filled for the 2023 season. Defensive line coach John Scott Jr. is leaving the program for a job with the NFL’s Detroit Lions. The Centre Daily Times was the first to report the news of the staff change with the Penn State program.

Franklin released a statement on his Twitter account on Monday evening to thank Scott for his assistance with the Penn State program.

I would like to thank John for everything he has contributed to our program over the past three years,” Franklin said in his released statement. “John is a great coach and also a great man. I am grateful for his friendship and the impact he has had on our student-athletes.”

“This was a great opportunity for him in the NFL and I wish him and his family nothing but the best,” Franklin added.

In addition to serving as the team’s defensive line coach, Scott was also Penn State’s run game coordinator. As a result, that is another responsibility that will have to be handed off or reassigned on the staff for the upcoming 2023 season.

This is the second staff change Penn State has made this offseason, but the first caused by a coach leaving for another job. Penn State made a switch with its wide receiver coach position by bringing in [autotag]Marques Hagans[/autotag] to replace [autotag]Taylor Stubblefield[/autotag].

Penn State makes surprising coaching staff change

The timing of this surprising coaching change at Penn State may not be a coincidence.

Penn State has fired wide receivers coach and offensive recruiting coordinator [autotag]Taylor Stubblefield[/autotag], the team announced on Sunday.

Stubblefield announced his departure from the Nittany Lions with a statement on Twitter as well.

Coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] stated he “would like to thank Taylor for his efforts during his time with Penn State but feel it is in our program’s best interest to make a change at this time,” James Franklin said. “I wish him and his family nothing but the best in the future.”

Franklin had told the media on Dec. 28 that “there’s a lot of moving parts left, but we’ll see how it plays out. But I’m hopeful that we will retain the majority if not all the staff.” Despite that statement we now see there was a change in the works.

In his statement, Stubblefield reflected on all his accomplishments during his three-year tenure in Happy Valley.

Interesting timing on this though that is worth mentioning, just after this move was announced transfer wide receiver [autotag]Dante Cephas[/autotag] committed to Penn State. Before Cephas committed, Penn State had two transfer targets at receivers commit to other schools, including one flipping his commitment from Penn State.

Stubblefield was hired to coach the team’s wide receivers prior to the 2020 season and took over as the offensive recruiting coordinator following the conclusion of the 2020 season. He coached [autotag]Jahan Dotson[/autotag], who was a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and he coached [autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] who declared for the draft last month. While he may not be a first-round pick this year as a projection, he will be one of the top-ranked receivers in the draft come April.

There is no update on who will be Penn State’s next wide receivers coach at this time.

Ki-Jana Carter, Paul Posluszny on College Football Hall of Fame ballot

Former Penn State greats Ki-Jana Carter and Paul Posluszny among the candidates for the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

The ballots for the next College Football Hall of Fame class for 2023 are out, and a trio of former Penn State greats are up for consideration by the voters. Former Penn State linebacker [autotag]Paul Posluszny[/autotag] and former running backs [autotag]Ki-Jana Carter[/autotag] and [autotag]D.J. Dozier[/autotag] are each a candidate for the College Football Hall of Fame.

In addition to the three former players, current Penn State wide receivers coach [autotag]Taylor Stubblefield[/autotag] appears on the ballot for his standout career as a player for Purdue. Another former Penn State player, [autotag]Glenn Killinger[/autotag], also is on the College Football Hall of fame ballot, but he is included as a candidate for a divisional coach.

This is Carter’s first appearance on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot, and he has a chance to join former teammate [autotag]Kerry Collins[/autotag], who was inducted into the hall of fame in 2018. Carter was a first-team All-American during Penn State’s undefeated 1994 season and ended his Penn State career as one of the best backs to ever come through the program. Carter was a runner-up to 1994 Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam of Colorado and a finalist for the Maxwell Award, which was won by Collins. Carter ended his career earning co-MVP honors in the 1995 Rose Bowl victory over Oregon with 156 rushing yards, highlighted by a memorable 83-yard touchdown on Penn State’s first offensive play of the game.

Carter went on to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 1995 NFL draft of the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent a total of 10 years in the NFL.

Dozier was also a first-team All-American for Penn State in 1986. He is the only player in school history to lead the Nittany Lions in rushing for four consecutive seasons and he was a key offensive piece of Penn State’s 1986 national championship run. It was Dozier who scored the game-winning touchdown for Penn State in its upset victory over No. 1 Miami in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl.

Posluszny was a two-time First Team All-American, including as a consensus pick in 2005, and he is one of two players to win the Chuck Bednarik Award twice (Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald is the other, doing so in 1995 and 1996). Posluzny also owns a Butkus Award and was a two-time First Team All-Big Ten player. Posluszny was also a National Football Foundation scholar-athlete in 2006.

Penn State currently has 20 inductees in the College Football Hall of Fame. The most recent inductee is former linebacker [autotag]LaVar Arrington[/autotag], who will officially be enshrined later this year after being voted in last year.
