Report: Patriots in ‘ongoing’ negotiations with safety Taylor Rapp

The Patriots are reportedly in negotiations with former Los Angeles Rams safety Taylor Rapp.

The New England Patriots are in active negotiations with free agent safety Taylor Rapp, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Rapp was in town for a visit on Thursday, as New England continues to look for depth at the safety position. Fowler reported the Patriots were in “ongoing” talks with the safety on Friday.

Rapp tallied 92 tackles last season, a fumble recovery and two interceptions. Those numbers were his highest since 2019. New England is in the market for a safety, following the retirement of Devin McCourty. Rapp could be an answer to strengthening a position that is headlined at the moment by Kyle Dugger.

The Patriots have been more active in the last couple days of the free agency period. Bringing Rapp into the fold would add to the flurry and give the Patriots another solid defensive piece.

Patriots still in talks with Taylor Rapp after recent visit

The Patriots remain in contact with Taylor Rapp after his visit on Thursday. Rapp is also visiting the Bengals.

The Los Angeles Rams’ two starting safeties began to explore the free-agent market on Thursday when they took a pair of visits with AFC teams. Nick Scott met with the Bengals and Taylor Rapp visited the Patriots, leaving the Rams with the possibility of losing both players.

The Bengals are working to sign Scott and though Rapp left New England without a deal, talks are ongoing, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Rapp is scheduled to visit the Bengals next, so he already has two potential suitors in free agency.

Rapp started 16 games for the Rams last season and has six interceptions in the last two years alone. He also recorded 92 and 94 tackles in the last two seasons, topping 90 tackles in three of his four years in the NFL so far.

Bengals working to sign Nick Scott, will also host Taylor Rapp on a visit

The Bengals are working toward signing Nick Scott, though the Rams still hope to retain him.

Nick Scott went on his first free-agent visit Thursday, meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals. That visit must have gone well because the Bengals are working toward a deal, according to PFF’s Brad Spielberger.

Aaron Wilson confirmed the news and added that “the Rams also hope to retain Scott,” so a deal isn’t done yet.

Scott played 16 games for the Rams last season, his first as a full-time starter. His partner at safety, Taylor Rapp, is also a free agent. And even with the Bengals working toward signing Scott, they remain interested in Rapp.

According to Field Yates, Rapp will visit the Bengals next after meeting with the Patriots on Thursday.

The Bengals lost both of their starting safeties in free agency already after Vonn Bell and Jessie Bates signed elsewhere, so they could be looking to replace that pair of teammates with another familiar tandem: Scott and Rapp.

Bengals will host free agent S Taylor Rapp on visit

More safety work for the Bengals in free agency.

The Cincinnati Bengals are putting in some major work on the safety position in free agency.

Cincinnati had Los Angeles Rams safety Nick Scott in for a visit on Thursday. And now, according to ESPN’s Field Yates, Scott’s teammate, Taylor Rapp, will visit the Bengals, too.

Rapp, 25, was a second-round pick in 2019 who had an 82.3 run defense grade and 72.9 coverage grade at PFF last season.

One of the surest tacklers at the position leaguewide, Rapp has experience lining up all over the defense. That’s something the Bengals will find valuable as they look to replace both Jessie Bates and Vonn Bell.

Either Scott or Rapp would make a ton of sense next to Dax Hill as the first-round product attempts to fill the void left by Bates’ departure next season.

Report: Patriots host three players for visit on Thursday

New England hosted a linebacker, safety, and a wide receiver for a visit on Thursday.

The New England Patriots are reportedly hosting three free agents on visits Thursday. Wide receiver Bisi Johnson, safety Taylor Rapp, and linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel are the three visitors, via Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan.

Johnson was placed on injured reserve last August after suffering a torn ACL. He played two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, recording 45 catches for 483 yards and three touchdowns.

Rapp has spent the last four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. He recorded 92 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery in 16 games last season.

Van Ginkel last played for the Miami Dolphins. He reported 47 combined tackles and an interception for Miami last season. He played in all 17 games.

These players could bolster their respective positions. Rapp could be vital for safety depth, while Van Ginkel could provide a solid presence in the linebacker room. Johnson would be able to add additional depth to a wide receiver room that is looking to retool.

New England has several areas to fill, as the free agency whirlwind continues. Here’s to hoping they will be able to make some additional moves.

Rams free agent Taylor Rapp is visiting the Patriots

Taylor Rapp is visiting the Patriots today as he weighs his options in free agency

On the same day that Nick Scott is visiting the Cincinnati Bengals, his teammate at safety, Taylor Rapp, is taking a visit of his own. According to Field Yates, Rapp is visiting the New England Patriots on Thursday, his first reported visit of free agency – which officially began on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.

Rapp started 16 games last season, picking off two passes and recording 92 total tackles – his third time with 90-plus tackles in four seasons with the Rams. He first came to Los Angeles as a second-round pick in 2019 out of Washington and has started 48 games since.

The Rams are facing the very real possibility of losing both of their starting safeties in free agency, which would leave them with Jordan Fuller, Russ Yeast and Quentin Lake as potential starters in 2023.

Rapp may not be the best safety in coverage, but he’s a decent run defender and brings a good punch with his tackles.

Rams 2023 free agency preview: Taylor Rapp’s future in LA uncertain

Taylor Rapp has been a starter for the Rams since he was a rookie in 2019, but what’s next for the physical safety?

There was a lot of excitement when the Los Angeles Rams drafted Taylor Rapp in the second round of the 2019 draft out of Washington, bringing on a young and talented safety to pair with John Johnson. Rapp has been a starter since he was a rookie but after four seasons, he’s now set to hit free agency and the Rams have a big decision to make.

Will Rapp be back with the team that drafted him or will he hit the market and sign elsewhere?

2023 NFL free agency: Ranking 5 defensive back options for the Seahawks

With that in mind, here are five free agent DB options for the Seahawks to consider this year.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll might be the planet’s premiere DB guru, or at least he’s right up there with Bill Belichick and John Harbaugh in their ability to find and develop quality talent on the back end. Seattle’s secondary is in strong shape heading into 2023. In Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams they have one of the league’s top starting safety combos plus a superb backup in Ryan Neal. They also have the most-talented young cornerback in the sport in Tariq Woolen, setting a strong foundation for the future.

However, this group isn’t a finished product just yet. With that in mind, here are five free agent DB options for the Seahawks to consider this year.

PFF picks Taylor Rapp as the free agent the Rams can’t afford to lose

According to PFF, the Rams can’t afford to lose Taylor Rapp in free agency

The Rams’ upcoming free-agent class isn’t nearly as loaded as last year’s was. There are still starters who will be hitting the market, but collectively, the group doesn’t match the talent level of Von Miller, Darious Williams and Austin Corbett.

Among the players who will become free agents in March is Taylor Rapp. He had an up-and-down season, playing relatively well against the run but struggling in coverage. In the eyes of Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger, Rapp is one free agent the Rams can’t afford to lose.

Rapp finally had the type of season the Rams were hoping for when they selected him in the second round out of Washington back in 2019, but the flashes were always there. Rapp earned career-high grades against the run (82.3) and in coverage (72.9) and missed just six tackle attempts en route to 70 tackles and 14 defensive stops in 2022.

The Rams may not want to spend more in the secondary, letting safety John Johnson III walk two years ago, in which case a cheaper deal for fellow safety Nick Scott perhaps is more appealing, but Rapp has developed into a reliable player on the backend.

The Rams could be in some trouble if both Rapp and Scott leave in free agency, which would cause them to be without their two starting safeties in 2023. Jordan Fuller is still under contract and there’s hope for both Russ Yeast and Quentin Lake, but the back end of the defense could look very different next season.

Rapp finished the year with 92 tackles and two interceptions, his third season in the NFL with at least 90 tackles and multiple interceptions. The numbers don’t tell the full story, however. He wasn’t always in great position in coverage, leading to some big plays down the field.

3 free agents Rams shouldn’t re-sign this offseason

The Rams should let these 3 players walk in free agency this offseason.

The Los Angeles Rams won’t be part of the NFL playoff gauntlet this season, which gives them ample time to look over the roster. Following a tumultuous regular season, the Rams will have 24 total free agents this offseason.

When you go 5-12 after winning a Super Bowl, there are certainly alterations that need to be made to the roster. While there are a handful of impending free agents the Rams should consider bringing back next season, there are a few that are worth letting hit the open market.

Of the 24 players that are set to hit free agency soon, here are three guys the Rams shouldn’t re-sign in the offseason.
