Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins gives praise to Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey

Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins gave praise to Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey.

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey has been thrown into a tough situation in the 2021-22 season as he has had to fill the shoes of one of the game’s brighter stars in Ben Simmons.

As the Simmons saga has taken place, the Sixers have had 21-year old Tyrese Maxey as their starting point guard. In just his second season, Maxey has taken on the challenge of the position he’s in and he has not blinked while continuing to grow and develop.

Maxey took another step forward in Monday’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies where he scored 33 points with eight assists and he took another step forward as a player. He made the eventual game-winning basket in overtime and he took steps forward as a distributor with the eight assists.

Before the game, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins had praise for Maxey.

“Very impressed with him last year,” said Jenkins. “I think his role grew as the season went on last year. He plays with great energy, he plays with tons of force, tons of pace, is physical when he gets downhill, obviously, he’s confident in the mid-range as well. He’s a confident shooter when the ball’s kicked out to him and he’s scrappy on the defensive end.”

Maxey is a young player who exudes confidence no matter what is going on. He is one of those players who can have an off game, but it will not bother him as he will find a way to keep pushing.

“He just plays with a lot of confidence,” Jenkins added. “I think this year having more of a role from the start of the season, you’re just seeing his game blossom even more.”

After the Sixers win, Jenkins gave more credit to Maxey for his performance while assessing his team’s performance.

“Obviously, they came up with some big plays there late in the game and Maxey had that big finish,” Jenkins finished. “So, highly competitive game and one we’ll definitely watch the film and see where we can get better. Lots of things that we can clean up.”
