Alex McPherson is ‘back to being himself’ following health setback

The Lou Groza Award semifinalist is starting to kick in practice after missing some time during the offseason.

After battling a gastrointestinal issue during the offseason, Auburn kicker [autotag]Alex McPherson[/autotag]’s status season was in question. Now, it appears that Auburn’s Lou Groza Award semifinalist will get a chance to return to the field sooner than imagined.

Auburn special teams coordinator [autotag]Tanner Burns[/autotag] met with the media this week, where he shared a positive update regarding one of Auburn’s top-scoring weapons. McPherson is starting to gain weight and has begun kicking in practice.

“It was a slow process to get him to where he’s at now, but I think he weighs a little over 140 now. So he’s gaining that weight, he’s starting to kick. Really kind of amping that up this week,” Burns said. “Health-wise and everything, he’s back to being himself. There was a point in time โ€” he’s always the type of kid that’s going to say he’s doing great whether he was having a good day or a bad day. But now the personality that we’re used to him having has shown up more and more.”

If McPherson needs to miss time, freshman [autotag]Towns McGough[/autotag], who became a folk legend following his A-Day performance, is ready to step up and take on the role of Auburn’s starting kicker. Burns has confidence that his kickers will give Auburn an edge in tight games.

“I feel like we’ve got the two best kickers in the country,” Burns said. “I really do. It’s not just something I’m saying. Those guys are the two most talented I’ve had in my years of coaching. Their mindset is what you want. But to be able to have Towns here in a situation that none of us could see happening, happening, and to have him here and his attitude and how he’s related to those guys and that group, and how he takes coaching. … He’s still just a freshman. No different than a wideout we have, a linebacker, anybody else. A freshman. But he had a good camp.”

McPherson reached perfection last season. He nailed all 13 of his field goal attempts with his long being 53 yards out. As for extra points, he connected on all 40 of his attempts. In two seasons, McPherson has missed just one kick. He missed a 54-yard field goal attempt in Auburn’s 13-10 win over Texas A&M in 2022. He plays a vital role in Auburn’s scoring success, so the possibility of him returning with full power will give the Tigers the upper hand in special teams.

Collegiate Baseball honors Ike Irish among Freshman All-Americans

The freshman slugger led Auburn baseball in several categories this season.

Collegiate Baseball announced on Wednesday that [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] would be named a Freshman All-American.

Irish is the 20th player in program history to earn Freshman All-American honors and the first to do so since 2018 when four Tigers were selected. Those players included [autotag]Tanner Burns[/autotag], [autotag]Cody Greenhill[/autotag], [autotag]Edouard Julien[/autotag] and [autotag]Steven Williams[/autotag].

Irish had a monster campaign during his Freshman season.

The Hudsonville, Michigan native led the team in batting average (.361), hits (86), and doubles (24). Placed second in RBI (50) and total bases (130), as well as scoring the third-most runs on the team with 48.

The 24 doubles hit by Irish set a freshman record for the program and are the most in a single season by an Auburn player since 2005. He also had a top-10 batting average in the SEC.

Auburn pitcher gets the call to join the Los Angeles Angels

Daniel joins Keegan Thompson and Casey Mize as a member of Auburn’s 2017 starting rotation to get called up to the majors.

A key piece to Auburn’s stout pitching rotations in 2017 and 2018 is getting his chance to shine in the Major Leagues.

[autotag]Davis Daniel[/autotag], who was a starting pitcher for the Tigers from 2017-19, has been called up by the Los Angeles Angels and will be a part of the active roster for Saturday night’s game against the New York Mets in Anaheim, California.

Daniel, who is celebrating his 25th birthday on Saturday, says that he got the call from the manager of the Angels’ triple-A affiliate, Lou Marson, at 1 a.m. MDT, and was on a flight from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles at 8 a.m. MDT, according to Sam Blum of The Athletic.

In nine starts on the mound for the triple-A Salt Lake Bees, Daniel posted aย  3-1 record with a 3.64 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 47.0 innings. It is unclear at the time of this post if Daniel will join the Angels rotation, or will be used as a bullpen arm.

Daniel was very instrumental during a significant era of Auburn pitching. In 2017, he was used as the Sunday starter in a weekend rotation that featured current Cubs starter [autotag]Keegan Thompson[/autotag] and Tigers starter [autotag]Casey Mize[/autotag]. Then, in 2018, he returned to the rotation with Mize as they added [autotag]Tanner Burns[/autotag] to the mix, who was later drafted by the Cleveland Indians with the No. 36 overall selection in 2020.

Prior to being taken in the 7th round by the Angels in 2019, Daniel made 37 career appearances and 27 starts for Auburn, where he posted a 7-7 record and 5.37 ERA to go along with 135 strikeouts in 139.0 innings.
