Report: Chiefs expected to sign Tajae Sharpe to practice squad

We lobbied for the Titans to bring Sharpe back, but that won’t be happening.

Former Tennessee Titans and Minnesota Viking wide receiver Tajae Sharpe has reportedly latched on with the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs are expected to sign Sharpe to their practice squad after he was listed as having visited with the team on Thursday’s transactions wire. Rapoport notes that Sharpe will have to go through COVID-19 protocols before joining the team.

Sharpe spent the first four seasons of his career with the Titans, the team that drafted him in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft.

The Massachusetts product was allowed to walk in free agency this past offseason and eventually signed with the Minnesota Vikings on a one-year, $1 million deal.

However, things didn’t work out in Minnesota for Sharpe, who failed to record a catch in four games before being released on Monday.

We lobbied for the Titans to bring Sharpe back due to a lack of depth at the position that was only made worse by Adam Humphries being placed on Injured Reserve recently.

Clearly that wasn’t a direction the Titans wanted to go in, and instead Sharpe will get a chance with a Chiefs team that sports the best record in the NFL.

Chiefs plan to sign WR Tajae Sharpe to practice squad

A new report from KC Star beat reporter Herbie Teope says the Chiefs plan to sign the ex-Vikings and Titans wideout to the practice squad.

The Kansas City Chiefs hosted a pair of wide receivers for workouts on Thursday and they plan to sign at least one of them to the practice squad following their visit.

According to Kansas City Star beat reporter Herbie Teope, the Chiefs plan to sign former Titans draft pick Tajae Sharpe to the practice squad after he clears the NFL’s COVID-19 screening. Teope’s report was later confirmed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Sharpe joined former Chiefs practice squad WR Chad Williams, visiting team facilities on Thursday according to the NFL’s official transaction report.

Sharpe, 25, was drafted by the Tennesse in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft. He appeared in 47 games for the Titans over three seasons, starting in a total of 29 games. During that span, he recorded 92 receptions on 168 targets for 1,167 yards and eight touchdowns. He appeared against the Chiefs in the AFC title game last season, starting the game, but dropping his lone target. He caught one pass for 20 yards against the Chiefs in Week 10 earlier that year.

This offseason, Sharpe signed on with the Minnesota Vikings on a one-year, $1 million deal in free agency, but he never saw any significant action for the team. He appeared in just three games and had four targets with no receptions. If you’re catching onto the theme here, Sharpe has had trouble with drops throughout his career. He’s only caught around 54% of the passes that have come his way during his career.

A fresh start on the Chiefs’ practice squad could be good for Sharpe. The team is expected to lose recently-released special teams ace Marcus Kemp, who is reportedly set to sign to the Miami Dolphins practice squad. For now, I’d expect Sharpe to maintain a similar type of role in Kansas City with special teams being his primary expertise.

Sharpe will fill one of two vacant spots on the practice squad. It’s unclear what the Chiefs plan to do with their other free spot at this time.

Tajae Sharpe clears waivers; Will Titans bring him back?

Don’t count on the Titans reuniting with Tajae Sharpe.

After hitting waivers following his release from the Minnesota Vikings, veteran wide receiver Tajae Sharpe went unclaimed on Tuesday, so he’s free to sign with any team he chooses.

It was a bit surprising to see the Titans not claim him with their need for depth at the position.

After all, it’s not like Sharpe is owed a lot of money the rest of the season, as he signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Vikings this past offseason, and his return would be seamless thanks to his experience in the offense.

Granted, Sharpe has been non-existent this season, but he has put up decent enough numbers in the past to be a viable depth option for the Titans or any other NFL roster, for that matter.

Prior to his clearing waivers, beat writer Paul Kuharsky tweeted that we shouldn’t expect a reunion with the Titans and their former fifth-round pick.

Along with Sharpe, wide receiver Kenny Stills is also available on the open market.

The Titans would be wise to sign one of these two veterans for the stretch run, especially because Adam Humphries’ future is uncertain after being placed on IR due to a concussion suffered in Week 8.

Furthermore, the Titans have very little experience behind A.J. Brown and Corey Davis and are one injury to either of those players away from having a huge problem on their hands, whether Humphries is healthy or not.

However, as of right now, it appears the Titans are content with what they have.

Vikings waive Tajae Sharpe; Titans should bring him home

The Titans could certainly use depth at wide receiver.

The Tennessee Titans should absolutely put in a waiver claim and try to bring back wide receiver Tajae Sharpe, who was waived by the Minnesota Vikings on Monday.

Sharpe signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Vikings in free agency this past offseason and was expected to have at least some kind of role with the team; however, that never materialized.

Instead, Sharpe fell on the depth chart and ended up playing in just four games and on a grand total of 28 snaps. The former fifth-round pick didn’t record a single catch.

The Titans have a definite need at the wide receiver position.

Adam Humphries was placed on Injured Reserve this past week and will miss at least two more games, and beyond A.J. Brown and Corey Davis, Tennessee doesn’t have much.

Sure, Cameron Batson has been a decent contributor here and there, but Kalif Raymond has been disappointing and non-existent, and 2020 UDFA Nick Westbrook-Ikhine has done even less.

Sharpe would fit in seamlessly into offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s offense given his experience playing in it last season, and he could be deployed on the boundary or in the slot in place of Humphries.

The 25-year-old came up with some big catches in 2019, finishing with 25 receptions for 329 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games.

Is Sharpe going to be a major difference-maker and put the Titans over the top? Of course not, but he would provide a decent insurance policy down the stretch of the season and instantly makes Tennessee’s receiving corps. at least a little bit better.

Waiver claims will process at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, so we should know Sharpe’s status then. If he goes unclaimed, he’ll be a free agent.

Minnesota Vikings vs. Jacksonville Jaguars: Inactives list

Here is the inactives list for the Minnesota Vikings’ game vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Vikings are trying to get back to .500 against the Jaguars on Sunday. If the team wants to do so, it will have to accomplish that feat without some important players.

There is good news, though: the team gets Ezra Cleveland and Adam Thielen back, barring anything unexpected. Thielen was activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list this week, while Cleveland was dealing with an ankle injury that led to him missing time previously.

The Vikings unfortunately have their share of absences on both sides of the ball, which has led to a lengthy list of inactives.

Here is Minnesota’s inactives, as well as Jacksonvilles’:

Minnesota Vikings vs. Dallas Cowboys: inactives

Here are the Minnesota Vikings’ inactives for the game vs. the Dallas Cowboys.

Minnesota has dealt with plenty of key absences this season. Despite it all, the Vikings have found a way to turn things around.

The Vikings corners have had trouble staying on the field. Cameron Dantzler is active for the team’s Week 11 matchup vs. the Dallas Cowboys. If he can play, he would certainly add a lot to a depleted corner unit. Mike Hughes, Mark Fields II, Holton Hill and safety/corner George Iloka are all still out.

Not only that, but Minnesota has ruled out a key offensive lineman for the game against Dallas. Here is the list of inactives:

Minnesota Vikings vs. Green Bay Packers: Week 8 inactives

See the inactives for the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers.

Minnesota had a lot of trouble against a talented Green Bay team in Week 1, especially in the secondary.

The Vikings ended up starting Cameron Dantzler and Mike Hughes that game. Both players struggled with physicality and covering their wideouts consistently.

Despite his inconsistent play, Dantzler being out could have spelled trouble for the Vikings defense. He was placed on the Reserve / COVID-19 list this week, but has since been removed and is active.

The Vikings still have their share of bad luck at the corner position, though. Holton Hill has been ruled as inactive for the game.

Dalvin Cook is officially active for the Week 8 matchup.

Titans should talk trade with Vikings for Tajae Sharpe

With A.J. Brown expected to miss more time and Tajae Sharpe not doing great with the Vikings, the Titans should be thinking trade.

One of the more interesting story lines going into the Week 3 contest between the Tennessee Titans and Minnesota Vikings was wide receiver Tajae Sharpe facing his old team for the first time.

However, that will not actually happen, as the Vikings wideout is among the team’s inactives for Sunday’s contest.

It has been a rough start to Sharpe’s tenure with Minnesota. He’s played just 16 snaps through two games and garnered one target, which he was unable to reel in for a catch.

Now, he’s a healthy scratch in Week 3, which is not a good sign for his standing with the team.

The interesting thing is, the Titans could really use Sharpe right now. Wide receiver A.J. Brown could be out longer than anticipated and Sharpe would have been a great depth piece to have in this situation.

It isn’t clear if Sharpe is in the Vikings’ plans moving forward, but it certainly doesn’t look good for him there and perhaps the Titans should at least inquire about a possible trade for the wideout, who would fit in seamlessly thanks to his knowledge of the offense.

Sharpe came up with some big catches for Tennessee in 2020, the final year of his four-year tenure with the team after the Titans drafted him in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.  The Massachusetts product finished the 2019 campaign with 25 catches for 329 yards and four touchdowns.

At most, the Titans would be giving up a late-round pick, or perhaps a swap of late-round picks, and Sharpe is better bet than the vast majority — if not all — of the options out there on the open market.

Stefon Diggs ranks 5th among best players traded this offseason

In most offseasons, when you trade someone like Stefon Diggs, it goes down as the deal of the offseason. Not so much in 2020.

In most offseasons, when you trade someone like Stefon Diggs, it goes down as the deal of the offseason.

Not so much this year when we saw DeAndre Hopkins and Rob Gronkowski get dealt.

The Vikings traded Diggs, who has had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, to the Bills this offseason after months of speculation. Sometimes when there’s smoke, there is indeed fire.

There were plenty of big-name players dealt in the offseason. In Gil Brandt’s ranking of top players dealt this offseason over at NFL.com, Diggs was fifth.

Here’s what Brandt wrote about Diggs:

The only reason I didn’t rank this move higher was the drama that bubbled up around Diggs’ apparent frustration in Minnesota ahead of his ultimate move to a new locale. Will Diggs establish a strong rapport with Bills QB Josh Allen and find happiness in coordinator Brian Daboll’s scheme? If the answer to both questions is yes, he’ll be the No. 1 receiver this team dearly needs him to be. Buffalo paid a steep price, but I think Diggs will help the Bills close the gap with — and overtake — the longtime AFC East bullies in New England. And that makes the move well worth it.

Meanwhile, the Vikings are hoping that free-agent signing Tajae Sharpe or rookie Justin Jefferson (who Minnesota took with Buffalo’s pick) can help lessen the blow of losing Diggs.

You can check out Brandt’s full list here.
