Tad Boyle brings home the gold with Team USA U18

Tad Boyle has brought home the gold!

Well, that was easy.

Colorado Buffaloes men’s basketball coach Tad Boyle was named as the head coach for the USA Basketball U18 team a few months back.

After getting out to a 2-0 start, Boyle’s team never let up. The conclusion of the FIBA U18 Americas Tournament has earned Boyle and his team a gold medal.

Team USA finished things off with a 102-60 victory against Brazil and was never really tested the entire time. This is the sixth straight gold medal for Team USA, and Boyle got some valuable experience during the past few weeks working with the game’s up-and-coming stars on the court.

The celebration was everything.

After winning the gold, the Buffs’ Twitter account gave Boyle a shoutout, and athletic director Rick George gave Boyle some appreciation as well.

Boyle now heads back to Boulder and will get back to work on getting his Buffs team ready to play in 2022-2023.

This is now the third medal for Boyle as a coach for Team USA, but this marks the first time he has won gold, in his first season at the helm, nonetheless.

Northern Colorado names Tad Boyle to athletics Hall of Fame

Tad Boyle was named to Northern Colorado’s athletics Hall of Fame

Greeley native Tad Boyle was named to the University of Northern Colorado’s 2022 Hall of Fame class on Thursday.

After beginning his tenure at UNC with a 4-24 record in 2006-07, Boyle led the Bears to a 25-8 record and a CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament quarterfinals appearance during his final season in 2009-10.

He also brought in a few of Northern Colorado’s best all-time players and helped form a fundraising program (h/t Jadyn Watson-Fisher of the Greeley Tribune):

His other accomplishments include recruiting Devon Beitzel, Yahosh Bonner and three other All-Big Sky selections. Beitzel would become a UNC Hall of Fame honoree and Big Sky MVP, while Bonner was the 2009-10 Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year.

While at UNC, Boyle helped create the Roundball Club to help fundraise for the program and athletic department as a whole.

Boyle’s success at Northern Colorado ultimately helped him land his current job at CU in 2010. And now 12 years later, he is spending this summer as the head coach of USA Basketball’s U18 National Team, which is 3-0 so far in the FIBA U18 Americas Championship.

Tad Boyle off to 2-0 start with Team USA U18 basketball

Tad Boyle has gotten off to a 2-0 start with his Team USA U18 team

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Tad Boyle is hard at work this offseason as the head coach for the Team USA U18 group.

Boyle is off to a terrific start with a 2-0 record in the first two days of action.

Team USA started things off on Monday with a 116-48 victory over the Dominican Republic and followed it up with another massive 123-41 win over Ecuador.

Next up for Team USA is Puerto Rico on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. MT, and the USA is 5-0 against Puerto Rico.

After the game, Boyle spoke about the first two games, according to the official website.

“Weā€™ve talked from the beginning about not being our own worst enemy and playing to the gold standard USA Basketball has for itself, and I think our guys have done a great job at that. Our guys are really sharing the ball on offense and playing with pretty good energy on defense.ā€

This is terrific exposure for Boyle and a chance to examine the next wave of college basketball players. We will continue to monitor Boyle’s success on the national stage, and the USA should have no problem moving to 3-0.

Tad Boyle still not ruling out a Jabari Walker return to Boulder

Tad Boyle hasn’t yet ruled out Jabari Walker returning to Colorado

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Tad Boyle was recently named the head coach for the USA Basketball FIBA U18 team after another successful season in Boulder.

But, the Buffs’ 2022-2023 season could be a greater challenge with standout Jabari Walker reportedly set on hiring an agent and going all-in on the NBA Draft.

However, Boyle recently told Pat Rooney of BuffZone that nothing has been decided just yet, which is definitely different from the report Walker’s father gave to ESPN recently.

Here is what Boyle said (h/t BuffZone):

ā€œJabari and I touched base, and I think he and I are on the same page in terms of where he is. Heā€™s going to go to the NBA combine and then heā€™ll come back and have feedback, and heā€™ll have a decision to make by June first. Heā€™s not signed with agent. Heā€™s keeping all his options open.”

So, according to Boyle, Walker has not signed with an agent and is keeping his college eligibility open, at least for the time being.

Earlier this week, Walker was one of the names headed to the NBA combine, which certainly bodes well for his draft stock. He was also a second-round selection in a recent mock draft from Bleacher Report.

To sum up, Walker hasn’t hired an agent, at least according to Boyle, but is headed to the NBA combine and could very well leave. It seems to be a bit confusing, but who knows, maybe there is a chance that Walker returns to the Buffs in 2022-2023 after all.

Incoming freshmen Kel’el Ware and Dior Johnson try out for Team USA U18 squad

Incoming freshmen Ke’lel Ware and Dior Johnson try out for Team USA U18 squad in Houston next month.

Fans of the Oregon Ducks men’s basketball team is going to get a sneak preview of what’s to come in the 2022-23 season with a pair of incoming freshmen trying out for the Team USA U18 squad.

Guard Dior Johnson and center Kel’el Ware will attempt to make the prestigious roster as they practice for the men’s U-18 FIBA Americas Championship. The tryouts will be held in Houston from May 26-June 2.

Ultimately, Team USA will have 12 players and once the team is announced, they’ll travel to Tijuana, Mexico for the Americas Championship tournament June 6-12.

The 7-foot Ware is a potential one-and-done player for the Ducks as he is projected to be a high first-round NBA draft pick. As for Johnson, he is also a potential one-and-done talent, but it’s very possible he’s at Oregon for longer than his freshman season. At 6-3, Johnson is a point guard that is expected to be in the starting lineup immediately, assuming Will Richardson leaves for a professional career.

Colorado’s Tad Boyle will be the head coach for Team USA.

Tad Boyle named USA Basketball FIBA U18 head coach

Tad Boyle is set to lead the FIBA U18 team

The Colorado Buffaloes basketball program is hard at work in an attempt to fill some holes heading into the 2022-2023 season.

Earlier, Jon Wilner of The Mercury News examined some Pac-12 head coaches on the hot seat, and unsurprisingly, Boyle was not on the list.

The Buffaloes have exceeded expectations with Boyle in town, and now the Colorado head coach has been named the new head coach for the FIBA U18 USA Basketball team this upcoming summer.

That is quite the honor for Boyle, and he will get a chance to work with some of the best young players in basketball.

“I’m honored and humbled to have the opportunity to coach the 18-and-under national team,” Boyle said in a release. “Anytime you have the opportunity to represent your country, it’s a responsibility that needs to be taken very seriously, and I’m looking forward to doing that and working with a bunch of great young men and being back with USA Basketball.”

Boyle led the Buffs to a 21-12 overall record last season, including a 12-8 clip in conference play but fell short of the NCAA Tournament.

Then, they lost to St. Bonaventure in the NIT in disappointing fashion. Nonetheless, Boyle’s job is safe, and being named the head coach for the FIBA U18 team is a massive accomplishment for the veteran.

The other coaches on the staff are Mike Boynton Jr. of Oklahoma State and Leon Rice of Boise State, which rounds out quite an impressive staff.

Boyle will have another shot to show off his skills and get to work with some top-tier talent, and, who knows, maybe that helps on the recruiting side.

Tad Boyle believes Buffs are subject to unfair bias in NCAA Tournament talks

Here’s what Tad Boyle said about why CU is being forgotten

Despite a now 21-win campaign, Colorado has mostly been pushed aside in the national conversation of who should make the NCAA Tournament.

Yes, the Buffs suffered a few ugly losses earlier this season, but upsetting the second-ranked team in the country and finishing fourth in a Power 5 conference should merit more than just whispers when debating their March Madness worth.

Soon after Colorado’sĀ 80-69 win over Oregon in Thursday’s Pac-12 Quarterfinals, head coach Tad Boyle shared his theory on why the Buffs have gotten so little NCAA Tournament consideration (h/t Matt Prehm of 247Sports):

I think there’s a big bias with East Coast and, quite frankly ESPN. They’re talking about Virginia Tech, they got one Quad 1 win ā€” we got three. They’re squarely on the bubble. We’re not even in the conversation. I hope the committee is smarter than the people that are putting that thing together. But, look, I can’t sit here and pound the table for Colorado because we lost to Southern Illinois, we had 10 losses. But we have a young team. And if you look at the Colorado team today relative to where we were in November or December, if you don’t think we’re one of the top 68 teams in the country, you’re sorely mistaken.

While Pac-12 men’s basketball season didn’t exactly meet expectations, the 10 p.m. ET tipoffs certainly didn’t do the Buffs any favors in attracting the ever-important “East Coast” attention.

However, another win over No. 2 Arizona in Friday’s Pac-12 Semifinals and the tournament selection committee should have a clearer choice when it comes to Colorado, at least in my opinion.

Tad Boyle tests positive for COVID-19, will miss Thursday’s game vs. Oregon

Tad Boyle will miss Thursday’s game against Oregon

Following a nearly week-long road trip, Tad Boyle has tested positive for COVID-19.

The 12th year Colorado head coach will be sidelined (at his home) for Thursday’s game against Oregon.Ā Associate head coach Mike Rohn, who Boyle hired as an assistant back in 2010, was named the acting head coach.

Rohn and the Buffs will look to sweep the regular season series against Oregon on Thursday.

ā€œWhile Iā€™m disappointed I canā€™t be on the court with our team, I have full confidence in our coaching staff and know that coach Rohn will have our team ready to play on Thursday,ā€ Boyle said. ā€œWeā€™re all doing everything we can to navigate the impacts of COVID-19, and Iā€™m grateful for the expertise and care of our medical staff in ensuring we take the proper steps to keep our student-athletes and staff safe.ā€

As of Tuesday, Boyle’s status for Saturday’s matchup against Oregon State is expected to be decided later in the week.

Colorado, which has lost four of its last five, has been severely shorthanded in recent games. Starting forward Tristan da Silva missed the Buffs’ two previous games with COVID and Elijah Parquet was sidelined against Washington State due to a lingering foot injury. Freshman 7-footer Lawson Lovering also suffered what is likely a season-ending MCL injury last week.

Tad Boyle rips apart Buffs following loss at Washington: “Pathetic”

Tad Boyle didn’t mince his words following Colorado’s loss to Washington.

Just two days after the Colorado Buffaloes battled back from a 15-point deficit at Matthew Knight Arena to secure a road win over the Oregon Ducks, they lost their spark and fell short of a victory in Seattle against the Washington Huskies.

The loss puts Colorado at 13-7 on the season and 5-5 against Pac-12 opponents. Terrell Brown Jr., the Pac-12’s leading scorer, had 26 points for the Huskies in their 60-58 win. Jabari Walker’s 14 points made him the only Buff to reach double-digits.

Colorado also committed 16 turnovers, was outrebounded by seven and after leading early on, collapsed dreadfully midway through the second half.

Tad Boyle was far from pleased with the Buffs’ performance on Thursday night.

“I’ve never been more embarrassed after a loss that I can remember at Colorado in 11-and-a-half years than I am right now tonight, in Seattle, Washington,” he said after the game.

In his postgame interview on the Colorado Radio Network, Boyle described Colorado’s play as “pathetic” while noting the team’s lack of consistency and toughness during the game. “We got bullied, we got punked,” he added.

“I’ve got to look at our starting five, I really do,” Boyle said. “The way we’ve started games lately, the way we started the second half tonight, we’re just not good enough.”

Perhaps Colorado’s lineup will look different against Washington State on Sunday as Boyle looks for more production.

In touching video, Tad Boyle shares why he named his puppy after the late CU superfan twin Betty Hoover

Tad Boyle honored the late twin and CU superfan Betty Hoover

Twin sisters and CU superfans Betty Hoover and Peggy Coppom will forever live in the lore of Buffaloes history. The two share a plaque outside of Folsom Field and have been honored numerous times for their decades upon decades of loyalty.

Sadly, Hoover passed away in August of 2020. While her spirit lives on with her sister’s continued attendance at games, Tad Boyle honored the late superfan with the naming of his new puppy, Betty.

In a recent video released by Colorado men’s basketball, the 12-year head coach said the twins have always meant a lot to him and that it was only necessary to name his new puppy in Hoover’s honor.
