Are we heading for a battle between UNC and Duke for this prized recruit?

We appear to be heading towards a battle between the UNC basketball program and Duke for this four-star forward in the 2023 class.

Hubert Davis and Jon Scheyer are heading for a big recruiting battle here as we get set for the Fall and Winter months. And both are hoping to land four-star forward [autotag]T.J. Power[/autotag] for their 2023 recruiting classes.

The Massachusetts product recently cut his list of 23 offers down to five finalists, naming UNC, Duke, Iowa, Boston College and Virginia as the teams he’s focusing on in his recruitment. But who has the lead in this race?

247Sports national recruiting analyst Eric Bossi was asked about Power’s recruitment in his latest mailbag and he hinted that this could be a Blue Blood battle on Tobacco Road:

I wouldn’t totally rule out one of BC, Iowa or UVA landing Power, but if I were headed to Vegas, I would likely pick either Duke or North Carolina here and from the outside looking in both Hubert Davis and Jon Scheyer have plenty to sell.

But there’s potentially more good news for UNC fans.  In that same article, Bossi says that the Tar Heels may have the slight edge in this recruitment.

Power has become a very important recruiting target for Davis and his staff with just Simeon Wilcher signed in the 2023 class. The Tar Heels need to add another prospect, especially after losing G.G. Jackson. And landing a player like Power in the post would be a big boost to the class.

UNC Basketball makes top five for top recruiting target

Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program have made the top five for four-star forward T.J. Power.

Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program have started to put the fullcourt press on four-star forward [autotag]T.J. Power[/autotag] in the 2023 class. After seeing G.G. Jackson decommit in July, the Tar Heels are searching for options at forward to pair with Simeon Wilcher in the class.

And on Monday, they took a step forward in the recruitment for Power.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pound power forward cut his list of 23 offers down to a final five, making a key update to his recruitment. Power announced he is down to UNC, Duke, Iowa, Virginia and Boston College, an ACC-dominant final list of schools.

Power has seen his recruitment take a big step forward with the attention of programs like UNC and Duke, landing offers from the Blue Bloods and then taking visits to both. When announcing his top five, he broke down each program including UNC:

North Carolina: “Coach (Hubert) Davis explained to me how I can use my versatility to do different things in their offense and contribute early in a big way. The opportunity to do that at a place as historic and successful as UNC is very important to me. They play at a fast pace and I just think my game could add to their explosiveness.”

As for a decision, Power told Joe Tipton that he is aiming at mid-to-late September but that could also change.

Power is ranked No. 21 nationally in the On3 rankings for the 2023 class.

Big recruiting target visiting UNC basketball on Monday

A top UNC basketball recruiting target is on campus Monday for an official visit just days after an impressive showing at the Peach Jam.

The UNC basketball program is hosting a big recruiting target on campus for an official visit on Monday.

Per Inside Carolina, four-star power forward [autotag]T.J. Power[/autotag] is on campus for an official visit just days after having an impressive showing at the Peach Jam in Georgia. Per the report, the forward and his family decided to drive from the event to UNC and take an official visit, allowing him to communicate with the staff while he is there.

On Sunday, his family drove to the Triangle area to visit with family. And on Monday, he’ll be on Carolina’s campus for an official visit, he confirmed to Inside Carolina. The visit will last just 24 hours. Because of NCAA rules, prospects are unable to take unofficial visits during July. However, rising seniors have until Aug. 1 to take their five junior year official visits.

Thus, Power and the UNC staff decided using an official visit was the best route to taking advantage of him being in North Carolina. Had Power not made Monday’s trip an official visit, he’d have been unable to communicate with the UNC staff or any athletic department personnel while on campus. He’ll do the same at Duke on Tuesday.

Power has caught the attention of UNC, receiving his offer this Summer. The UNC staff then watched him several times at the Peach Jam, where Power impressed throughout the week.

Since losing G.G. Jackson, Hubert Davis and his staff have started to show interest in other recruits including Power. The hope is to land at least one more big man to pair with five-star guard Simeon Wilcher.

This fact about T.J. Power could give UNC the edge in his recruitment

Will the UNC basketball program benefit from four-star recruit T.J. Power having Tar Heels’ fans in his family?

Class of 2023 power forward [autotag]T.J. Power[/autotag] is a name that UNC basketball fans are getting more and more familiar with. It was just a few weeks back when Hubert Davis and his staff offered the prospect and now they have their sights set on landing him.

The Massachusetts native is playing very well on the AAU circuit and is drawing significant interest from several programs. He’s up to a total of 23 offers already and has taken two visits while another is scheduled. But with UNC recently showing interest, are they too far behind to catch up?

Power talked to Travis Branham of 247Sports and he revealed something very interesting about his family:

North Carolina: “I got a lot of UNC fans in my family so it was cool to share that moment with them. Coach Davis first year head coach making a national championship and I think there’s a spot for me there to play pretty yearly and do some damage so definitely going to look into that one pretty hard.”

The family part is very interesting and the highlight of the quote, which is good news for UNC. There’s also more good things in there including him saying he’s definitely going to look into that one.

Power has yet to set up a visit to UNC but we’d be shocked if the Tar Heels didn’t get one soon.

UNC watching intriguing four-star power forward at Peach Jam

UNC Basketball head coach Hubert Davis is in attendance to watch four-star power forward TJ Power at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam.

The UNC basketball program is well represented at this week’s Peach Jam in South Carolina and they are keeping their eyes on a few prospects.

We already wrote on five-star commit Simeon Wilcher standing out early at the event and now UNC is watching a four-star power forward they recently offered. [autotag]T.J. Power[/autotag] is drawing a crowd during Wednesday’s session as Boston Amateur Basketball Club takes on The Skill Factory.

UNC is among the teams in attendance for the game, as Hubert Davis is joining several other coaches there to watch players including Power hit the court on Wednesday afternoon per Trent Markwith:

The Shrewsbury, Massachusetts prospect is seeing his stock climb here over the Summer with his excellent play so far.

He has a total of 23 offers and has made two visits, one to Notre Dame and one to Virginia, and will also visit Iowa as well. Power is ranked No. 65 nationally, No. 14 power forward and No. 1 player in the state per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

Notre Dame offers four-star Massachusetts forward T.J. Power

The Irish could use this kid.

If the next season began today, Notre Dame would have a whole lot of guards but not many forwards. Heck, it was like that this past season. However, could a power forward from Massachusetts help rectify that problem in a couple of years? Say hello to T.J. Power, a 2023 recruit who has received an offer from the Irish:

Power attends Worcester Academy and lights it up for that school, but he also plays for the Boston Amateur Basketball Club, of which Bonzie Colson is an alumnus. He’s done pretty well for that team lately, too:

And he’s catching the attention of at least one recruiting analyst:

So far, the Irish will have to battle with the following ACC rivals for Power’s services: Miami, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. Others in contention include Iowa, Penn State, Oklahoma, Marquette and Georgetown. A decision likely won’t come for a while, but let’s hope for the best.
