Clemson’s Defensive X-Factor for Week 12 vs. North Carolina

Clemson will need a strong pass rush to slow down North Carolina’s star quarterback, Drake Maye.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers look to continue their strong run Saturday as the No.22 North Carolina Tar Heels travel to Death Valley for a 2022 ACC Championship game rematch.

For this Clemson team to be successful against the Tar Heels, they’ll have to shut down North Carolina’s high-powered offense led by star quarterback Drake Maye. As one of the best quarterbacks in college football and a projected top-10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye is a player who can take over a game and pick apart a defense.

If Clemson wants to slow Maye down, their pass rush must perform at a high level. That leads us to our Defensive X-Factor for the matchup, freshman edge rusher T.J. Parker. Parker has slowed down a bit after an incredible start to this season, as offensive lines have been forced to pay him more attention.

Parker hasn’t recorded a sack in four weeks, and there is no better time for the young defensive end to record a big one than against one of the game’s best. Watch out for Parker this Saturday; he will be key to the Tigers’ success.

Clemson statistical leaders through eight games

Who scares you most on the Tigers?

This hasn’t been the season Clemson or any outsiders envisioned. While not everyone was anticipating another national championship, it’s doubtful anyone expected that by this point, the Tigers wouldn’t even been receiving votes in polls. A bowl isn’t out of the realm of possibility, but if November is a very bad month for the Tigers, it’s probable they’ll be watching bowl season at home. Talk about dropping off.

All of that said, there still is some talent on this Tigers team, especially on defense. If anything, these players are remnants of a time in the recent past when the Tigers were feared. Many might have picked Notre Dame to lose Saturday’s game at the start of the season, but that no longer is a certainty. This is why you play the games though: You never know what can happen.

Here are the Tigers most likely to have an impact when they face the Irish:

Three Tigers named midseason true freshman All-Americans by 247Sports

Clemson’s true freshmen have been phenomenal this season.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson coaching staff did fine work recruiting in the 2023 class, as they brought in multiple new Tigers who have had an immediate impact on the team.

On both sides of the ball, we’ve seen true freshmen earn playing time and perform at a high level. Without multiple of these new Tigers, this Clemson team would be in a lot worse shape than many would expect heading into this season.

At the midseason point, 247Sports released their true freshmen All-Americans, with three Tigers making the team. Here is a look at each of those three Tigers and what writer Chris Hummer had to say about them.

Grading Clemson’s defense at the halfway point of the season

Clemson’s defense has been near elite this season, grading out well.

Defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin and the Clemson defense have had a near-elite start to this 2023 season, with the unit looking like one of the best in the country through six games.

Clemson (4-2, 2-2 ACC) has had an up-and-down season, and two losses were not expected out of this team in the first half of the season. Even so, this Clemson defense has been this team’s most impressive and consistent part.

From veteran stars playing at a high level to freshmen bursting onto the scene and making a name for themselves, this unit has had some excellent performances. It is yet another top-tier defense from this program.

Here is a grade for each part of Clemson’s defense at the halfway point of this season.

Clemson’s freshmen class is making a significant impact at the halfway point of the season

Clemson’s freshmen class has excelled this season.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson coaching staff did a phenomenal job recruiting for their 2023 class, and it shows with the way this group has been playing halfway through the season.

When you have freshmen come into a program and make an immediate impact like some of these guys have, it is a good sign of things to come. From top-tier recruits to recruits who flew under the radar, Clemson has had some unreal performances from their true freshmen.

On the defensive side of the ball, we’ve seen multiple freshmen step into an elite defense and make it that much better. The highlight has been defensive end T.J Parker, who could possibly be the most valuable player on this defense through six games. His four sacks this season pace the team, and the impact is clear whenever you see him on the field.

The most hyped recruit in the class, defensive tackle Peter Woods, may not be stuffing the stat sheet, but he is clearly a unique talent. Watching his tape, this guy is a presence on the defensive line, requiring immense attention from the opposing offensive line. He has been a perfect rotational piece playing with Tyler Davis and Ruke Orhorhoro.

In the secondary, we’ve seen safety Khalil Barnes make plays. He has a knack for causing a turnover, with an interception and two forced fumbles. At cornerback, Aveion Terrell has been quietly excellent when given runs.

The biggest surprise of all, however, comes on the offensive side of the ball with wide receiver Tyler Brown. From almost not being a Tiger to starting quarterback Cade Klubnik’s top target, Brown is arguably the most explosive player on this Clemson offense.

The future looks bright in Clemson.

Goodwin says Parker is ‘well beyond his years’

True freshman defensive end T.J. Parker leads Clemson in sacks and is fifth in total tackles.

Coming into the 2023 season, all eyes were on five-star defensive tackle Peter Woods to be the standout player in the Tigers’ 2023 recruiting class. And while Woods has played well, another true freshman has emerged as a difference maker for the Tigers on the defensive line.

Through six games, defensive end T.J. Parker leads Clemson in sacks with four and has the fifth most total tackles on the team with 19.

While Parker is just a true freshman and isn’t technically a starter, he has cemented himself among the Tigers’ best pass rushers, earning praise from defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin on Monday.

“You knew early on, even in January coming in, that he was kind of well beyond his years as far as football, understanding his technique and just his work ethic,” Goodwin said of Parker. “Just the type of young man that he is, really high character, great family, all of the above. But every week, he seems to get better and better and better.”

Parker had the best game of his young career against Syracuse in Week 5 when he had five tackles and two sacks. The performance earned him ACC Player of the Week honors, and he joined Myles Murphy, Dexter Lawrence and Corico Wright as the only Clemson freshmen in the Dabo Swinney era to record two sacks in a single game.

“He still needs to clean up some alignment issues and doing some small things better. But for the most part, he’s been really productive,” Goodwin added. “Heavy-handed, providing some good pass rush force up front and just brings great energy and demeanor, as well, on game day. He really understands how offenses attack. I’m super excited about the second half, seeing where he continues to improve and grow.”

A four-star recruit coming out of high school, Parker has been playing behind Xavier Thomas and Justin Mascoll. That said, his youth and inexperience haven’t stopped him from seeing significant snaps.

Mascoll had high praise for Parker when speaking to the media on Sept. 26, saying that Parker is much further along than where he was as a freshman.

“He’s just a hard worker, and he competes every day,” Mascoll said. “He definitely pushes me and XT every day to be better, and I just appreciate him so much. He’s kind of he’s come a long way. I mean, he came in the spring, but he’s made a major stride in his game as far as being a great pass rusher and playing the run well. And just his knowledge of the game was growing. You could just tell he knows a lot of football.”

Clemson will host Wake Forest at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, and several Tigers will be under the spotlight for Clemson’s Homecoming game.

Last Week against Syracuse, we saw multiple Tigers step up when the team needed it most. From two freshmen phenoms to veterans in the Clemson secondary, this team did exactly what they needed to earn their first ACC win and shut out the noise on the road against a tough Syracuse team.

Wake Forest poses a different challenge, which the Tigers can handle. Here are five Clemson players to keep a close eye on when the Tigers take on the Demon Deacons:

Clemson’s Defensive X-Factor for Week 6 vs. Wake Forest

This freshman pass rusher has been excellent this season and needs another big performance on Saturday against the Demon Deacons.

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson coaching staff did a superb job recruiting their 2023 class, with multiple freshmen being top-tier producers for the Tigers.

One of those freshmen, T.J. Parker, is our Defensive X-Factor for the Tigers’ Week 6 matchup against Wake Forest. For the Clemson defense to put together a strong performance, Parker and the rest of the defensive line will have to create pressure for Wake Forest starting quarterback Mitch Griffis.

When it comes to getting to the quarterback, no one on this team is better than Parker. He has looked unreal on the edge this season with a motor that seems to never end.

Through five games, Parker leads the Tigers in sacks (3) and tackles for loss (7.5). His TFL numbers rank tied for sixth most in the country this season.

Parker will look to continue the strong start to his Clemson career Saturday.

Here are five reasons Clemson walks away from Week 6 with an impressive win over Wake Forest.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers have a home matchup against Dave Clawson and Wake Forest on Saturday as Clemson looks to pick up their second ACC win of the season.

Clemson (3-2, 1-2 ACC) heads into this game coming off a statement road win against Syracuse, where the Tigers proved to everyone that this team still has a lot of fight left in them. The offense and defense looked strong in the win, and they go back to Death Valley with an opportunity to put on a great performance in front of their fans.

On the other side, Wake Forest (3-1, 0-1 ACC) is looking for their first conference win and in a challenging environment. Can Clawson and the Demon Deacons get revenge for their double-overtime home loss to Clemson last season?

Well, anything can happen, but we are here to tell you why they won’t. Here are five reasons Clemson takes down Wake Forest in Week 6.
