Former Raiders CB TJ Carrie among 4 released as Browns clear cap space

We were sent into the weekend with the Washington Redskins making two big cap casualty cuts. I hope everyone had a nice weekend because it’s Monday now and another round of cuts has begun.

Today, it was the Browns who cleaned some house, cutting four players, cornerback TJ Carrie, tight end Demetrius Harris, guard Eric Kush, and linebacker Adarius Taylor. Those releases free up a combined $13.4 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap.com.

The most notable cut is that of former Raiders cornerback TJ Carrie. He was set to make $8.15 million this season, which was supposed to be his third season of a four-year deal he signed with the team before the 2018 season.

Carrie was one of the first players Jon Gruden allowed to leave as a free agent. He was rewarded with a four-year, $31 million deal with Cleveland, but as with any NFL contract, it’s only worth the guarantees. Everything else is a wait-and-see proposition. Carrie is 29 years of age. The Antioch native has 5 interceptions and 43 pass breakups in his career.

Harris clears up $2.48 million, Taylor $2.44 million, and Kush $2.1 million. None of whom are players anyone is going to be rushing out to sign. Though, I could see some interest in Harris if only because Gruden loves his tight ends and Harris isn’t a bad one as a third option who can block and will catch around 15 passes for 200 yards and a couple touchdowns.

Browns cut 4 players including starters T.J. Carrie and Demetrius Harris

3 of the 4 were John Dorsey signees last summer

The Cleveland Browns have severed ties with four players from the 2019 team, including three of the most prominent free-agent acquisitions from last offseason under then-GM John Dorsey.

New GM Andrew Berry and the Browns announced the release of CB T.J. Carrie, TE Demetrius Harris, OL Eric Kush and LB Adarius Taylor. All but Carrie were brought to the team by Dorsey and his staff in 2019. Harris and Kush were former Kansas City Chiefs who Dorsey had experience with in his own time with that franchise.

Carrie has been a starter for the Browns for his two seasons in Cleveland, playing both outside and in the slot. He had two years left on his contract.

Harris emerged as a primary short-yardage target but struggled overall in his one year in Cleveland. Kush started seven games at right guard and played in all 16 games. Taylor played almost exclusively on special teams after signing as a free agent.
