World Cup fans rip Fox Sports over misleading tweet about Cristian Ronaldo after Portugal scored

This was bad, Fox Sports.

Portugal is taking on Switzerland this afternoon in a knockout stage match at the World Cup in Qatar and they’re doing it with their legend, Cristiano Ronaldo watching from the bench as he shockingly didn’t get the start.

Things are going well for Portugal, though, as they lead 2-0 at the half as of this writing.

You know who is not doing fine? Fox Sports, which has had a number of rough moments in this World Cup. and their coverage of this game and of Ronaldo.

Moments after Portugal’s first goal, the Fox Soccer Twitter account posted a short video of Ronaldo sitting on the bench. The way they worded it (and with the use of the eyes emoji) made it seem like Ronaldo didn’t have any reaction to the goal and didn’t care about his teammates.

Here’s a screenshot of the tweet, because Fox Soccer deleted minutes later after just about everyone on Twitter ripped them for posting it:

The video lasted three seconds and it was clear that the goal had happened well before that because even his teammate in the background wasn’t reacting to anything, either.

Fans were not impressed:

Who needs Neymar when you have … Casemiro??

How many teams have a defensive midfielder that can score a winner like this?

Even for a team as good as Brazil, Neymar’s injury looms large over the rest of the team’s World Cup campaign.

The superstar suffered an ankle injury in Brazil’s opener against Serbia, forcing him out of Monday’s game against Switzerland amid reports he’s likely out for the rest of the group stage at least.

Brazil may feel Neymar’s absence as the tournament goes on if he’s unable to recover but on Monday, they gave us a reminder that they are still Brazil.

After all, how many teams at this tournament can turn to their defensive midfielder to score a winner as pure as Casemiro’s against the Swiss?

The European side frustrated Brazil through 83 minutes of the match at Stadium 974, with the favored Selecao seeing a second-half goal from Vinícius Jr. waved off due to an offside call.

But as the game entered its final minutes, Casemiro got on the end of a clever flicked pass from Rodrygo and surprised everyone with a quick half-volley that flew into the far corner.

That would be all Brazil needed on the night in a 1-0 victory that took them into the last 16 for an incredible 14th straight tournament. As long as the Selecao keep producing defensive-minded players who can strike a ball this pure, that streak will likely continue.

Switzerland’s Breel Embolo refuses to celebrate goal vs. Cameroon, his birth nation

The Switzerland forward was born in in Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé

Switzerland striker Breel Embolo was full of emotion after his winning goal against Cameroon, for a variety of reasons.

Scoring any goal at a World Cup is a milestone but for Embolo, Thursday’s strike in the 48th minute of an eventual 1-0 win went much deeper.

Embolo was born in Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé and moved to France at age five, before settling in Switzerland shortly afterwards. The Monaco striker has referred to himself as Cameroon’s biggest fan.

Prior to the game, Embolo spoke about how special the occasion would be.

“It’s very special. It’s my hometown and my mum and my dad come from there, my family, most of them come from there, so it’s a special game for me and my family,” Embolo said.

But once the game started the forward had a job to do, and he did it well.

Embolo got on the end of a Xherdan Shaqiri cross and powered home a finish from close range, before raising his arms in a muted, if not apologetic celebration.

“I told him, ‘Breel, friendship until the start, then they are your opponents,'” said Switzerland coach Murat Yakin after the game. “Football writes such stories but he completed his mission.”

This Switzerland fan turned into the best meme after his team’s game-tying goal in Euro 2020

The duality of sports fandom, now in meme form.

Euro 2020 has been a rollercoaster of emotions for soccer fans over the last few weeks. We’ve seen shocking ties between rivals and embarrassing own-goals, but maybe nothing will compare to what Switzerland just did to their fans.

On Monday, during the first knockout rounds of Euro 2020, Switzerland was down 3-1 after the 75th minute on Paul Pogba’s goal in the second half. Facing down elimination, Switzerland was able to get within one on Haris Seferovic’s second of the game at 81 minutes, then the team was able to tie the game 3-3 just before the 90th minute to get to extra time.

It’s an incredible comeback for the Swiss in one of the best matches of the tournament we’ve seen yet.

That brings us to this one Swiss fan who has now captured the heart of soccer fans everywhere, as he was originally shown on the broadcast in the final minute of play in clear agony and heartbreak at the team’s likely loss. Then, after Switzerland’s tying goal, the broadcast panned back to the fan, who was suddenly shirtless and screaming in absolute joy.

It’s an incredible showcase of the duality of sports, captured just mere minutes apart.

Of course, as always, Twitter had a blast turning this fan into a new meme.

Spain vs. Switzerland: Sergio Ramos misses two penalties in 1-1 draw

Sergio Ramos had a day to forget in Switzerland on Saturday.

Saturday’s UEFA Nations League match between Switzerland and Spain at St. Jakob-Park in Basel was a historic occasion for captain Sergio Ramos for more than one reason.

Ramos, a mainstay in the Spanish team, made his 177th international appearance at the senior level, passing legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to become the most capped European men’s player in history.

He also failed to convert from the penalty spot twice (!), breaking his own excellent streak of made penalty kicks that stretched back to 2018.

With Spain trailing 1-0 following a first-half goal from Remo Freuler, goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved a poorly placed penalty attempt from Ramos.

Ramos got another chance in the 80th minute, with Spain up a man after Nico Elvedi earned a red card – and Ramos hit an even worse penalty. He delivered the ball to virtually the same spot with little pace, making the save easy for Sommer.

Fortunately for Spain, Gerard Moreno scored a late equalizer in the 89th minute to earn a 1-1 draw.
