Why Kansas City Chiefs Will Win the Super Bowl

Get the ball out of the hands of Patrick Mahomes in a hurry.

For all of the fun on offense, and for all of the wonderful things Jalen Hurts can do, it’s the Eagle pass rush that’s the biggest issue for the Chiefs.

Mahomes and company have no problems getting into a shootout, and when they want to, they’ve got the ability to grind it a bit and control the clock. What they can’t do is expect the mediocre wide receivers to make big things happen down the field.

A high ankle sprain doesn’t just heal up in a few short weeks. Mahomes proved he could play on it without a problem, but he’s still not going to be quite the same guy moving around and making magic happen.

That’s all fine – he’s obviously a brilliant pocket passer – but he has to rely on the running game that didn’t do anything against the Bengals, and he has to come up with a ton of quick-hitting strikes to get the ball to his guys on the move.

Expect a lot of Isiah Pacheco as a target. Watch out for Jerick McKinnon to be unleashed after not doing a whole lot in the first two playoff games. Beware of all of the periphery parts like Skyy Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scandling, and others to be involved.

No one is more of a master at making everyone around an offense better than Mahomes.

However …

The stage is set for Super Bowl LIV, as the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs battle it out Sunday evening at Hard Rock Stadium. San Francisco leads the all-time series 7-6-1, as the two teams get set for their 15th meeting in franchise history on FOX, with programming set to also take place on the NFL Network. A 49ers victory will give the team its sixth Super Bowl Championship, tying the Steelers and Patriots for most in NFL history. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are looking for their first title since defeating the Vikings in 1970.

How to Watch: Super Bowl LIV

If you look at the winningest teams in Super Bowl history, the mantra “defense wins championships” has never been truer. That bodes well for the 49ers who have paved their road to South Florida based on that philosophy. San Francisco has held opponents to an average of 252.2 yards per game in the postseason. Minnesota scored just ten points in the NFC Divisional Round, while Green Bay notched just seven points in the first three quarters of the NFC Championship game.  It’s no secret that the Chiefs like to air it out and if Nick Bosa and a disruptive defensive line can force reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes out of his rhythm and more importantly off the field, it’s going to be a long day.

Offensively,  head coach Kyle Shanahan is going to rely on the running game with Raheem Mostert, Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman. Coleman dislocated his shoulder in the 37-20 win against the Packers and is optimistic he will return on Sunday. Mostert picked up the slack in his absence with a career game rushing for 220 yards on 29 carries and four touchdowns. Jimmy Garoppolo completed a mere six of eight passes for 77 yards. Can Jimmy G be more than just a game manager and join the likes of Joe Montana and Steve Young as 49er quarterbacks who have won Super Bowls in Miami? If the 49ers want to avoid being one dimensional on offense that will be a key and will need to include tight end George Kittle, who was one of three tight ends with over 1,000 yards in the regular season.

While the 49ers have won comfortably in the postseason, the road to Super Bowl LIV has been fueled by offensive explosions and comebacks for the Kansas City Chiefs. Leading the way is reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, who has racked up 615 yards passing and nine total touchdowns in KC’s 51-31 victory over the Texans in the divisional round and 35-21 wins against the Titans in the AFC Championship. Mahomes has weapons at wide receiver in Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins, arguably the fastest tandem in the league, and the best tight end in Travis Kelce. Kansas City can’t get behind early against a stellar San Francisco defense.

Last weekend, Kansas City held the NFL’s leading rusher, Derrick Henry, to 69 yards and one touchdown. How will the team fare against a 49ers team who loves to pound the rock? If Jimmy G is forced to throw the ball and the Chiefs shut down their offense, they will have a chance to pick up their first championship in 50 years.
