4-Down Territory: Super Bowl LVIII recap edition

Now that Super Bowl LVIII is in the books, and the Chiefs are the repeat champions, Doug Farrar and Kyle Madson break it down in “4-Down Territory.”

Now that Super Bowl LVIII is in the books, and the Kansas City Chiefs are the first team to repeat as champs since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots, it’s time for Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire, and Kyle Madson of Niners Wire, to review the biggest game of the season in  “4-Down Territory.”

This week, the guys have some serious questions to answer:

  1. What does this loss do to Kyle Shanahan, as we have to add it to the other Super Bowl losses?
  2. How might we look at Andy Reid differently now that he has three Lombardi Trophies in five years?
  3. Is Patrick Mahomes the greatest quarterback ever? And if not, what’s the argument against it?
  4. Finally, where do the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers go from here?

Chiefs DT Chris Jones calls the Ravens the best team in the league

Only one team walks away as Super Bowl champions at the end of the NFL season, but that does not always mean they were the best team.

After winning Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones made his opinion clear on who he believed the best team in the NFL was this season.

“I think we faced the best team in the league in [the] Baltimore Ravens, hands down,” Jones said.

Jones is not alone in this opinion. The Ravens were widely viewed as the best team in the NFL heading into the playoffs — a belief that was only solidified following Baltimore’s 34-10 thrashing of the Houston Texans in the divisional round. DVOA also backed this with the Ravens ranking as the fifth-best regular season team in DVOA history. Baltimore ranked third all-time before resting starters against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the final game of the regular season.

Despite this, the Ravens failed to reach the Super Bowl, instead falling to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship. Baltimore only scored 10 points after demolishing many of the best teams in the NFL over the season’s final month.

Jones talked about the hard-fought journey the Chiefs had to make to reach the Super Bowl, including playing at M&T Bank Stadium in the AFC Championship game against the Ravens.

“It’s a tough environment. MVP Lamar Jackson and that defense, man. We [were] able to overcome them obstacles, we weren’t going to be defeated here.”

In some ways, this makes Baltimore’s loss in the AFC Championship sting even more. Unless you have Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, making and winning a Super Bowl is extremely tough, and the Ravens may have let their best chance to do so with Jackson slip through their fingers.

Twitter reacts to Chiefs’ extension of Steve Spagnuolo’s contract

Users on Twitter were thrilled with the #Chiefs’ decision to extend defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s contract.

Steve Spagnuolo has played a key role in the Kansas City Chiefs’ success in recent years and earned himself a contract extension after the team’s Super Bowl LVIII victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

As one of the most decorated assistant coaches in NFL history, Spagnuolo’s impact on Kansas City’s trajectory can’t be overstated. Since he relieved former defensive coordinator Bob Sutton in 2019, Spagnuolo has helped the Chiefs win three Super Bowls.

His extension on Wednesday is a sign that head coach Andy Reid intends to keep Spagnuolo in Kansas City for the foreseeable future and should serve as an indication that the Chiefs’ coaching staff will remain intact heading into the 2024 season.

Fans on social media went wild when news of Spagnuolo’s extension broke on Twitter and weren’t shy about expressing their admiration for his efforts in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Check out some of their top reactions to the news below:

Chiefs extend DC Steve Spagnuolo after Super Bowl LVIII victory

The #Chiefs extended Steve Spagnuolo’s contract on Wednesday after Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVIII victory over the 49ers.

The Kansas City Chiefs extended defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s contract on Wednesday after his exceptional performance in Super Bowl LVIII that helped the team win its third championship of the Patrick Mahomes era.

The terms of Spagnuolo’s contract weren’t announced, but the Chiefs confirmed his extension on Twitter.

Spagnuolo, a grizzled veteran of the NFL ranks, has been with Kansas City since 2019 after stints with the Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants. His contributions have been crucial to the Chiefs’ success in recent years, and won’t soon be forgotten by fans who have watched Kansas City’s rise to dominance.

The Chiefs’ decision to extend Spagnuolo was a no-brainer after the superb performance his unit put together against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Regarded as one of football’s top defensive minds, Spagnuolo should be expected to stay in Kansas City for years to come after his extension on Wednesday.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid explains his celebratory tackle of Chris Jones after Super Bowl LVIII

Andy Reid told reporters about his celebratory tackle of Chris Jones after the #Chiefs’ win in Super Bowl LVIII.

The head coaching career of Andy Reid is seemingly destined to end with an enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Kansas City Chiefs adding a third title has put them in the same conversation as some of the league’s greatest dynasties.

Reid’s trust and passion for his players’ success has made him a favorite wherever he’s coached. The viral video of the 65-year-old coach playfully tackling defensive tackle Chris Jones was a prime example of his relationship. He explained the moment to reporters during Tuesday’s press conference.

“I was so happy for him (Chris Jones),” Reid explained. “I kind of had been riding him a little bit. We needed him in there, and he was spent; he was tired, but he sucked it up, and he got out there, and he pushed himself probably further than he thought he could push himself.

“He took himself to that state, that wrestling state where you got to really reach down in there and kind of get through that evil thing that is kicking your butt internally. He did that, and I was so proud of him for that.”

The question remains regarding the future of Jones in Kansas City as his one-year deal is over, and he can test free agency this offseason. Reid reminded reporters of general manager Brett Veach’s comments about focusing on retaining the All-Pro defensive tackle.

“I think (General Manager Brett) Veach has said it before, we’d love to have him (Chris Jones) back,” said Reid. “They just have to work all that out, but I think that the effort will be there probably on both parts to try to get something done.”

The prospect of signing Jones is always up for discussion because of the type of money he could demand. The Chiefs will still need to figure out how to re-sign cornerback L’Jarius Sneed.

Super Bowl LVIII hero Mecole Hardman talks about the Chiefs’ success while working with Raising Cane’s

Super Bowl LVIII Hero Mecole Hardman talks about the #Chiefs’ success while working with Raising Cane’s

The Kansas City Chiefs secured their third Super Bowl title in five years with Sunday’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers. It was their third title for some players while being with the team throughout the incredible five-year span.

Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman is one of the players who has contributed to those three titles and also caught the game-winning touchdown on Sunday. Hardman was back in Kansas City on Tuesday back at work but in a different way as he filled in working for Raising Cane’s, known for its crave-able Chicken Finger meals.

Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. sat down with Hardman moments before his shift at the restaurant to get his thoughts on the Super Bowl victory and his life after the big touchdown catch.

“Yeah, I’m working the drive-thru, I believe, but I’m trying to see how it goes,” said Hardman as he entered Raising Cane’s. “I haven’t got the full details about what to do, but hopefully, I’ll be kind of good at it.”

Hardman’s heroics in the Super Bowl have pushed him further into the limelight, as he described the 48 hours since the game.

“No sleep, it’s been wild,” said Hardman with a smile. “Doing all the media, I was in Las Vegas, and then go pack your hotel room up there, flying to LA to do Jimmy Kimmel Live and coming back late last night to be here at Raising Cane’s.”

“It’s amazing a lot of guys play in this league and don’t ever get a chance to go to the Super Bowl. Let alone win it three times,” Hardman explained. “So you have to be grateful every time you get a chance to play in a Super Bowl and take advantage of that opportunity. So, I’m grateful to be with this organization for them to get me three rings, so it’s been amazing.”

Hardman’s versatility was one of the many intangibles that made him such an essential acquisition for the Chiefs at the trade deadline. He showed some of that by working briefly at the Raising Cane’s restaurant, but it’s safe to say he’s far from done with his day job on the football field.

Jamaal Charles is getting Chiefs fans ready for Wednesday’s parade with Bud Light Genie

Jamaal Charles is getting #Chiefs fans ready for Wednesday’s parade with Bud Light Genie

Former Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles played many memorable seasons with the team and understands how to excite the crowd. The Super Bowl LVIII champions will get a hero’s welcome on Wednesday for the championship parade that promises to do better than last year’s fantastic turnout.

Chiefs Kingdom will remember “Bring Home the Bud Light” from last year, featuring the Chiefs legend at the parade. He is back this year with a new surprise, as Charles explained in a statement.

“We’re back-to-back champs, Chiefs Kingdom! I know you all remember Bud Light and [me] delivering the fun on parade day last year,” said Charles. “Now we’re coming back and bringing the Bud Light Genie with us! Kansas City always shows up and brings the energy on parade day, and I’m excited to show the Bud Light Genie what we’re all about. So let’s all grab a Bud Light, and cheers to the champs!”

This year, special limited-edition Bud Light Chiefs championship bottles will be available at select retailers along the parade route this week and then on shelves at participating retailers beginning March 25th.

49ers expecting former Panthers coach Steve Wilks to return in 2024

Former Panthers interim HC Steve Wilks is seemingly sticking around in San Francisco.

Charlotte, N.C. native Steve Wilks may have a home in the Bay Area.

During Tuesday’s season-ending press conference alongside his general manager John Lynch, San Francisco 49ers head coach was asked if Wilks would be returning for the 2024 campaign.

“I haven’t talked to anybody yet, so, yeah, I expect all our coaches to be back,” Shanahan replied, per 49ers Webzone’s Kirk Larrabee.

Wilks, the former Carolina Panthers interim head coach, served as the defensive coordinator for the NFC champions in 2023. Under his guidance, the 49ers ranked eighth in total defense—allowing 303.9 total yards per game.

San Francisco, however, just came up short in Super Bowl LVIII, falling in a 25-22 overtime thriller to the Kansas City Chiefs. The win was clinched with a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who captured his third Super Bowl Most Valuable Player honor in the past five years.

It’s alright, Wilks. No one can stop that guy.

Chiefs DL Mike Pennel hailed as unsung hero of Super Bowl LVIII

Fans shared their thoughts about #Chiefs DL Mike Pennel’s superb performance in Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVIII win.

The Kansas City Chiefs defensive line put together an outstanding performance in Super Bowl LVIII, and one underrated contributor is being hailed as the team’s unsung hero of the game.

Veteran tackle Mike Pennel, who was part of Kansas City’s Super Bowl LIV win over the San Francisco 49ers in 2020 before putting together a legendary showing on Sunday, stood out as the team’s most underrated asset on the NFL’s biggest stage.

His six combined tackles tied for fourth place on the Chiefs’ leaderboard in the game, and without his presence on the interior of the defensive line, 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey could have had a field day against Kansas City’s front four.

Pennel signed with the Chiefs in October after a brief stint with the Chicago Bears. His addition proved crucial in Kansas City’s effort to secure its third title in four years.

Check out what users on Twitter had to say about Pennel after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII victory on Sunday:
