How Todd Bowles made life miserable for an overmatched Chiefs offensive line

The Bucs gave the Chiefs offensive line a good, old fashioned whoopin.

Blocking, or the inability to, was the defining story of Super Bowl LV. It’s not a profound thing to learn about the game of football, but it was startling that even the great Patrick Mahomes could almost look like a mere mortal against the Buccaneers.

It wasn’t just that the Chiefs were physically outmatched as their patchwork offensive line took on the Bucs front seven, but they were schematically outmatched too. Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles knew that the Chiefs offensive line didn’t have much time playing or practicing together, so he got a little creative with the ways that he attacked them.

Mahomes still put together a Herculean effort that featured multiple insane throws under duress, but the Chiefs receivers weren’t able to haul them in.

One of the first blitzes that Bowles used to attack the Chiefs was a double cornerback blitz that left Mahomes scrambling and trying to find a receiver deep down the field.

To be fair to the Chiefs, this would be a pretty hard block to pick up even for a veteran offensive line with hundreds of snaps together. An offensive line that was missing both starting tackles and the left guard from Kansas City’s Week 1 lineup simply had no chance.

Bowles deployed overload fronts, which is usually three or more rushers on one side of the line of scrimmage, and ran twists and games to free up rushers to rattle Mahomes. Shaq Barrett is tough to block by himself, but getting him an unblocked pressure just isn’t fair to the Chiefs offense.

The Bucs also stacked the offensive line with five man fronts featuring inside linebackers Lavonte David and Devin White over the offensive guards. David and White have the athleticism and range to blitz and cover, which puts a lot of stress on the offensive line. Prior to the snap, the offensive line can only guess whether or not they’re going to drop into coverage or blitz.

Early in the game, David ended up dropping into coverage on one of these five-man blitzes while White ran a twist with pass rusher Anthony Nelson. Nelson was a little clumsy on the play, but his twist with White confused the Chiefs offensive line just enough where he could get into the backfield and disrupt Mahomes — who still somehow managed to make a perfect throw.

When the Bucs weren’t playing games with the Chiefs offensive line, they were just beating them down. There was a severe talent disadvantage for the Chiefs offensive line. Mike Remmers, the Chiefs left tackle for the game, struggled immensely.

Barrett was able to get past him for a sack.

Vita Vea, a 350 pound nose tackle, was able to bully him into the backfield.

And Jason Pierre-Paul was able to get past Remmers with ease.

The Chiefs caught a string of bad luck with their offensive line injuries and the Bucs capitalized. The injury to Eric Fisher was the one the Chiefs simply could not overcome after so many other changes. This game, then, is not a grandiose statement on the quality of Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, or Eric Bienemy.

Bad injury luck caught up to the them. The game is the game.

Tom Brady won his seventh Super Bowl with the win over Kansas City. Now that’s another win that Michigan can brag about – what schools have the most Super Bowl winning starting quarterbacks?

The Big 12 finally got a Super Bowl-winning quarterback last year with Patrick Mahomes bringing one home, and he came a game away from making it two.

But that Tom Brady guy did it again to keep adding to Michigan’s bragging rights.

There’s still a whole lot of work to do by other massive football schools.

USC, Miami, Oklahoma, Florida, Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Washington and Arizona State … none of them have a Super Bowl-winning starting quarterback on the resumé.

Patrick Mahomes was among the first players to congratulate Tom Brady on Super Bowl win

All class.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Tom Brady is a Super Bowl champion.

Sunday night’s game against the Chiefs marked Brady’s 10th appearance in the Super Bowl, and in those nine prior trips to the Super Bowl, Brady’s postgame sportsmanship has fallen under increasing scrutiny.

It comes down to this: Brady has always made the effort to be available for the postgame handshake after wins. But in his three previous Super Bowl losses, Brady never met at midfield with the quarterback who beat him.

Well, the same can’t be said for Mahomes because after Kansas City’s 31-9 loss to the Buccaneers, Mahomes was among the first players on the field to congratulate Brady on his seventh Super Bowl win. The two met on the field and we could hear as Brady told Mahomes to “keep in touch.”

It was all class from Mahomes, which, in his first Super Bowl loss, showed how he handled the defeat differently than Brady had.

Up until Super Bowl LV, there was an undeniable pattern with Brady’s post-Super Bowl handshakes.

Following the Eagles’ win over the Patriots in Super Bowl LII, Brady notably snubbed Nick Foles of a postgame handshake. Though Brady did meet with some Eagles players behind the scenes after the game, Brady’s tendency to avoid greetings with Foles had Foles himself curious years later.

Going back to the Super Bowl XLII loss to the Giants, Brady and the Patriots were already heading down the tunnel when the game ended. He didn’t meet with Giants quarterback Eli Manning for any on-field handshake.

At Super Bowl XLVI, the Giants again beat the Patriots, and Brady immediately left the field when his third-down Hail Mary fell incomplete. To be fair to Brady here, though, it would have been tough for the Patriots quarterback to find Manning among the photographers.

Yet, Brady has made himself available to shake hands with the opposing quarterback on the field after his own Super Bowl wins.

There were a few times that Brady didn’t shake hands with the losing quarterback.

Super Bowl XXXVIII

Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme remained on the sideline before leaving the field for the locker room. He didn’t greet Brady on the field.

Super Bowl XXXVI

Kurt Warner remained out on the field to congratulate Patriots players, but there were no videos or photos available of him congratulating Brady on the field.

But as far as sportsmanship goes, you have to respect how Mahomes handled the disappointing defeat with class.

How many Super Bowls has Tom Brady played in and won?

How many Super Bowls has Tom Brady played in and won, and how many can he win with this game against the Chiefs?

Tom Brady will start at quarterback in the Super Bowl on Sunday in a game against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Brady, 43 years old, is no stranger to the big game. Which will have a lot of people asking: How many Super Bowls has Tom Brady played in, and how many has he won?

Tom Brady played in his first Super Bowl in 2001, when the young, unsung quarterback got the nod and Bill Belichick rode the hot hand to his first win against the Rams.

He has now won six Super Bowls (XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLIX, LI, LIII) and played in eight total Super Bowls — today’s game will be his ninth. The two losses came to the Giants in 2007 and 2011.

All previous Super Bowls Brady has played in came with him on the Patriots. This will be his first with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Someone really bet $2.3 million on the Buccaneers to cover in the Super Bowl

My goodness that is a lot of money.

They say scared money don’t make money, and that’s certainly true.

But when you have enough money to bet $2.3 million on a single thing, what is there to really be scared of?

That’s what someone bet on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. They’re +3.5 on the spread. Someone bet $2.3 million that they’d be able to cover against the Chiefs, according to Bet MGM.

And if they do cover, the person who placed that bet will get a cool $2 million back. Talk about getting a bang for your buck. Or…your Bucs.

Don’t worry. I’ll see myself out.

When you’re already betting $2.3 million, another $2 million is certainly not life-changing money for this bettor. But it’s still a lot. Good luck, I guess.

Bettor places $2.3M wager on Buccaneers through BetMGM

A massive wager has come in on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The bettor is backing the Bucs to the tune of $2.3 million.

There is one bettor out there who didn’t wait for Super Bowl week to declare his intentions. And he went big as in huge.

BetMGM has taken a $2.3M wager on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The wager was on the Bucs +3.5 (-115). If Tampa Bay covers the spread against the Kansas City Chiefs, the bettor would win a net of $2 million.

Per ESPN.com:

According to company spokesperson Elisa Richardson, the bet was placed on BetMGM’s mobile app and is the largest Super Bowl wager any U.S. sportsbook had reported as of Friday morning.

The wager went in the opposite direction of most of the early action on the game, which has favored the Kansas City Chiefs, who are looking to go back-to-back.

“This was a bet we were very happy to receive,” Jason Scott, vice president of trading for BetMGM, told ESPN. “We had previously written several other six-figure bets, all on Kansas City, and the public is certainly behind Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes.”

The Chiefs remained consensus 3-point favorites and were attracting 74% of the point-spread bets at Caesars Sportsbook by William Hill. FanDuel and DraftKings also reported lopsided action on the Chiefs, with greater than 75% of the early money backing the defending champions at each sportsbook.

Updated 2021 Super Bowl LV odds

Looking at the updated betting odds to win the 2021 Super Bowl LV.

[jwplayer aUHDvWrm]

The 2020 NFL season kicks off in a little more than a month and all teams have their eyes on the prize — winning Super Bowl LV. Which teams stand out better than others? Which teams are on the outside looking in? Here we look at the updated 2021 Super Bowl LV betting odds and who the oddsmakers at BetMGM Sportsbook predict to have a successful season.

Are you new to the world of sports betting? A futures wager is a bet on an event much further down the road, meaning your money will be tied up (sometimes, for months) until the event concludes. However, if you bet on the right team, a large ROI is in store. For example, the New Orleans Saints at +1200 would return a profit of $1,200 for every $100 you wager should you bet on them to win Super Bowl LV and they, ultimately, go on to do just that.

The longer you wait to place a futures bet, the shorter the odds will typically become for the teams that live up to expectations. If the Saints go onto have a solid start to the season, the odds could dip closer to even money. Like everything in life, timing is everything…
