No. 22 Saguaro takes on Basha: How to watch the top Arizona HS football matchup

A must-see Friday night matchup on the NFHS Network!

It’s a clash of top football programs in the Grand Canyon State on Friday night, September 8, as No. 22 Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) takes on Basha (Chandler, Ariz.).

The Bears will look to rebound from a one-point loss last week at the hands of in-state foe Highland and get back into Super 25 contention. Led by four-star quarterback and Arizona Wildcats commit Demond Williams Jr., Basha has plenty of talent to get back on a winning streak, too, with the offense scoring over 60 points in the opening win.

Standing in the way and looking to create a possible losing streak, the Sabercats have gotten out to a 2-0 start. Like Basha, the Saguaro offense is solid, averaging over 40 points per game. However, the defense hasn’t been as stout, so seeing an outcome similar to the December 10, 2022, Arizona (AIA) Open Division football state championship would not be a huge surprise.

Basha won that game 28-21, securing the program’s first state title…

…while creating a great story arc for the matchup on Friday night!

No. 3 St. John Bosco takes on St. Frances Academy: How to watch the national matchup

A must-see Friday night matchup on the NFHS Network!

SJB vs. SFA.

Few teams in the high school football landscape can carry the kind of prowess required to pull off going by the school’s initials, but St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) and St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, Md.) are certainly worthy of that rare distinction.

And to see both juggernauts line up on Friday night, Sept. 8? Yes. Please!

No. 3 St. John Bosco hasn’t slowed a bit from the team’s 2022 campaign, where the Braves finished the year as the national champs. Loaded with talented on both sides of the ball—which includes top-tier fronts—Bosco is out to a 3-0 start and already has a Super 25 win under its belt: a 20-7 nod on the road against St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)

Will they notch a fourth win on Friday?

St. Frances Academy has been a perplexing team in the opening three games of the season, a perennial football power that remains winless on the year.

But the Panthers arguably have had the most challenging track of any Super 25 hopeful so far, losing to No. 8 Buford (Ga.), No. 5 Chaminade-Madonna and top contender East St. Louis (Ill.) .

If ever there was a team due for turnaround on a national stage, this would be it — a road test out west might be just what the team needs to regain momentum and get back into the win column.

No. 5 Chaminade-Madonna takes on No. 20 Bergen Catholic: How to watch the Super 25 matchup

Two perennial Super 25 teams square off for the Friday night matchup!

The USA TODAY HSS Super 25 clashes continue this week, as the follow-up act to the Bishop Gorman-Miami Central thriller highlights two perennial powers on Friday night, Sept. 8.

Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.) and Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) have been Super 25 staples for years, holding rank as two of the top programs in Florida and Jersey ‚ as well as nationally.

No. 5 Madonna has already made headlines in 2023, taking care of St. Frances Academy ( Baltimore, Md.) in the opener and then rolling in-state foe Cardinal Gibbons the following week. Led by N.C. State commit Cedrick Bailey, the offense is averaging nearly 40 points a game, while the defense has surrendered only 18 total.

However, No. 20 Bergen Catholic looks to stymie that trend.

The Crusaders also line up with a standout defense, continuing the efforts in 2022 when the team allowed less than two touchdowns per game on average. And the Jersey power is just as impressive from the other side of the ball, averaging 30-plus points so far this season.

In short: What a battle it’ll be!

No. 3 Bishop Gorman takes on No. 4 Miami Central: How to watch the Super 25 matchup

A must-see Friday night matchup!

We didn’t need to wait long for the first significant USA TODAY HSS Super 25 clash of the 2023 season.

After the opening rankings were released this week, much of the focus turned to the No. 3 and No. 4 teams. That’s where Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Central (Miami, Fla.) currently sit, respectively … but not for long.

The Gaels and Rockets play at Gorman’s home field this Friday, Sept. 1, headlining an early test that could easily have top-spot implications.
Both teams are loaded with talent, a continuation from the 2022 campaigns that arguably were the best in the nation—maybe even above the ’22 champ St. John Bosco.

For the home team, the offensive firepower is still monumental, with the Gaels scoring 60-plus points in each of the first two games.

For the visitors, it’s an opening test for a defense that allowed just over 200 points in 2022, which played a vital role in the Rockets’ 14-game winning streak.

No. 16 Hamilton ends No. 10 Chandler’s 45-game winning streak

Hamilton High School ended Chandler’s 45-game win streak and asserted itself as the owners of Arizona Avenue.

Two of the 25 best high school football teams in the country are located four miles away from each other in a Phoenix suburb. Hamilton High School (Chandler, Ariz.) dominated the rivalry over the first decade of its existence, winning 17 straight matchups between 1998 and 2012, but since, Chandler High School has owned the Battle For Arizona Avenue, winning every matchup since a 2013 playoff meeting.

Until this year. On Friday night, Hamilton regained the crown, taking home a 21-14 victory on the back of a defense that did not allow a single point after the first quarter.

With the win, the No. 16 Huskies ended Chandler’s 45-game winning streak and sent the No. 10 team packing.

It officially marks the end of a piece of history Hamilton does not want to remember, one far deeper than simple losses on the football field, but hazing scandal that resulted in arrests of players and reassignments of the principal, athletic director and head coach.

The emergence of Chandler as a football powerhouse removed Hamilton from its annual throne assumptions and the 2017 hazing lawsuit sank it further, dropping them to a 3-7 record in 2018 before the program quickly regrouped. The Huskies have been good, going 9-3 and 8-2 in the two seasons since, but has still trailed Chandler as the premier 6A team since.

The job will not be finished until the Open Division championships when the two teams will likely meet again, but there is no disputing it now: Hamilton is back.

Chandler had 56-yard and 50-yard touchdown passes in the first quarter, but the Huskies defense prevented the Wolves from doing any more. Chandler was sacked 10 times and did not record a first down until midway through the third quarter.

Hamilton’s defensive line was monstrous and saved the game for the Huskies. After Chandler forced a red zone fumble, Hamilton’s Chandler Davis got a strip-sack that led to a Hamilton touchdown.

The line came up huge on Chandler’s final drive as well. A long connection from three-star quarterback Blaine Hipa to Ohio State commit Kyion Grayes set the Wolves up at the 31-yard line and plenty of time to break hearts one more time. But the line got a sack to force third-and-16. They got a sack to force fourth-and-way-too-long. They forced a turnover on downs and let the offense run out the clock.

West Virginia quarterback commit Nicco Marchiol played very conservatively, completing 12 of 19 passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 24 more yards on 11 carries. Logan Krei, a two-sport athlete and highly ranked baseball player, rushed for 98 yards on 12 carries, including a 15-yard touchdown.

Hamilton’s national announcement of return was in their bonkers comeback win over Bishop Gorman near the beginning of the season, but locally, they were still No. 2. This win turns the page to a new chapter of Huskies football.

It’s not over until the champion has been anointed, but now, for the first time in eight years, Hamilton runs Arizona Avenue.

WATCH: Referee-assisted interception returned to the house by Thompson Warriors

Not your typical pick-six

It’s the “Un-immaculate Interception!”

The Thompson Warriors hardly need any help holding opposing offenses from nearing the end zone, having roadblocked their way to four shutouts in the team’s first six games of the 2021 season. More so, the No. 5 ranked squad in the USA TODAY Sports Super 25 certainly doesn’t need any lucky breaks— but they got one Friday night against Vestavia Hills (Ala.).

To the tape!

In all fairness and multiple replays, the ref looked like he tried his best to get out of the way of the throw—”A” for effort and “LOL” for the rest of it.

It’s not Franco Harris via John Fuqua via Jack Tatum (allegedly) via Terry Bradshaw, but it certainly shows that anything can happen under the lights of Friday night.

And you all thought the 12th Man was only a Seattle Seahawks thing.

The playoffs are a time for established teams getting knocked off and new solidifying places in the Super 25 Football Rankings.

This week, four teams suffered playoff losses that led to them dropping out of the Super 25, and four new teams entered due to big wins.

FULL RANKINGS: Super 25 Football Rankings, Week 16

Pickerington (Ohio) Central is the highest-ranked team that wasn’t on the list last week. Two games ago, the Tigers downed a Super 25 regular in Mentor (Ohio), by a score of 28-21. Last game, Pickerington Central took down Elder 21-14 to win the Division I Championship in Ohio. The Tigers cracked the rankings at No. 20 after those key victories.

Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) — another team that was unranked — came in at No. 21 this week. The team took down Judson (Converse, Texas) in a shootout to make it to the 6A D1 Semifinal game against No. 8 North Shore, (Galena Park, Texas).

Thompson (Alabama), a team that’s been in and out of the Super 25 this year, came in at No. 23 after knocking off Central (Phenix City, Alabama).

Lincoln-Way East (Frankfort, Illinois) made the list this week at No. 25. The team finished the season with a Class 8A State Championship in Illinois.

The teams that dropped out were Male (Louisville, Kentucky), Saguaro (Scottsdale, Arizona), Washington (Massillon, Ohio) and the aforementioned Central.

St. John Bosco seizes top spot in Week 15 Super 25 High School Football Rankings

There’s a new No. 1 in the Super 25 Football Rankings this week. See who’s on top!

[jwplayer a1b3y8zW-BmKM743H]

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, California) looked like the No. 1 team in the country for much of the year.

The team, which already defeated St. John Bosco (Bellflower, California) earlier in the season, seemed to be pulling away from the Braves once again. Mater Dei was up 28-5 over them in the CIF-SS Div. 1 championship game.

FULL RANKINGS: Super 25 Football Rankings, Week 15

At the time, when the game was 28-5, something clicked for St. John Bosco — and its star quarterback found a rhythm.

DJ Uiagalelei led his team back to finish with 444 passing yards and five touchdowns as St. John Bosco stunned Mater Dei 39-34 Saturday.

“I knew our kids were tough. I knew we were resilient,” St. John Bosco coach Jason Negro told the Orange Country Register.

St. John Bosco’s one loss in the regular season was to Mater Dei. At the time these two teams played Saturday, St. John Bosco was No. 4 and Mater Dei was No. 1.

For the Braves, a victory that big and already ranking No. 4 was all they needed: St. John Bosco moved into the No. 1 spot in the Super 25 Football Rankings this week.

St. John Bosco might be a strong contender to claim the No. 1 ranking in the final list, but there’s still teams that can take that from them.

No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) has notched its record to 13-0. The team recently routed Venice (Florida) 42-0. St. Thomas Aquinas also was ranked No. 1 in the Preseason poll.

No. 3 Duncanville is the top Texas team in the Super 25 ranks. The team is also 13-0 after beating Martin (Arlington, Texas) 45-7. It has a big game against No. 13 Southlake Carroll  (Texas) Friday.

Not only is there strong competition in the rankings, but St. John Bosco has a tough test next game if it wants to keep the throne. De La Salle (Concord, California) plays it in the California Open Division title game.
