The top team in the country faces a tough CIF-SS test this Friday as Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) welcomes Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) for a classic gridiron showdown in the Golden State.

While much of the Super 25 has shifted during the football season’s opening weeks, the Monarchs have stood firm atop the rankings. And if the team manages to stay on track for the remainder of the season, it could break a tie for the most Super 25 national champion nods in history, ending the current run along with De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) at five total.

This team certainly has the talent—on both sides of the ball—to pull off the historic feat, too. The defense has allowed less than 10 points on average, while the offense—led by a proverbial brick wall of an O-line—averages over 40.

But a Trinity League battle is never a walkover, especially against a team like Servite, which has only one loss on the season so far: a tough three-point defeat to an unbeaten Rancho Cucamonga.

It would be an understatement to call this one anything other than a must-see matchup.

This Friday, No. 16 Colquitt County (Norman Park, Ga.) welcomes Lincoln (Tallahassee, Fla.) for a battle of undefeated teams.

It’s a rematch of last year’s game that ended in a 30-7 win for the Packers. But this is a different Lincoln Trojans team, one that comes into the game at 4-0 with a stingy defense that hasn’t allowed a pint in the last two games and only surrendered 21 all season.

Of course, Colquitt County presents a tough set of challenges, beginning with QB Neko Fann, who is now the program’s all-time touchdown pass leader, and four-star wideout Ny’Quavion Carr.

And if the offense doesn’t wear a team down, then the solid defense can more than help stymie a game plan.

The high school football schedule is coming off a wild week, including two top 10 teams in the USA TODAY HSS Super 25 suffering defeats. And this week’s action is shaping up to provide just as much—if not more—drama across the gridiron.

One of the headliners is an Arizona-California matchup on Friday night that will definitely impact next week’s rankings.

No. 17 Liberty (Peoria, Ariz.) is on a roll in 2023, outscoring opponents 209 to 34 in four games and currently tied atop the challenging 6A Northeast Valley section.

Led by one of the top quarterbacks in the country, junior talent Navi Bruzon, the Lions present nightmare scenarios for the defense—on the ground and through the air—while featuring a shutdown lineup on the other side of the ball.

For Centennial (Corona, California), it’s a chance to return to the Super 25 with a big win at home. And make no mistake; this is a legitimately talented roster—the Huskies’ two losses this season are against the top two Super 25 programs, Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman, so overlooking this squad wouldn’t be a smart move.

The California power also features one of the best QBs in the game, super sophomore Husan Longstreet, who can dismantle defenses with his arm and legs.

It’s a top Georgia high school football battle this Friday as No. 14 Mill Creek heads to Parkview for a matchup of unbeaten teams.

Mill Creek has quietly moved up the USA TODAY HSS Super 25 this season, with the 4-0 Hawks currently holding down the No. 14 spot. Led by sophomore quarterback Shane Throgmartin, the offense has continued to progress toward the 2022 attack that helped take home a state championship. And the defense has talent at each level, including North Carolina Tar Heel commit Jaiden Patterson and Georgia Tech commit Trajen Greco in the secondary.

For the Panthers, all eyes will be on 5-star wideout and Tennessee Vols commit Mike Matthews and senior quarterback Colin Houck. If the duo can spread the field, it could be a prime opportunity for junior running back Khyair Spain to create some serious headaches for the defense from the backfield.

Of course, that’s a big “if,” so the Parkview defense will need to continue its dynamic prowess in 2023, where that side of the ball has surrendered only two scores a game on average.

The Texas high school football spotlight will focus heavily on Austin this Friday as No. 15 Westlake takes on Lake Travis.

Both teams enter the game undefeated, opening up storylines beyond city supremacy with a possible Super 25 impact looming next week.

Westlake enters the game on massive regular-season winning streaking (35 games) and currently holds the No. 15 spot in the national rankings. Led by junior quarterback Paxton Land, the Chaparrals’ offense has put up impressive numbers in the first three games, although it’s the defense, which has only allowed 21 points so far, highlights this dynamic roster.

On the other sideline, Lake Travis has matched the Chaps’ 2023 output with an impressive offense and an equally stingy defense. The team has 15 returning starters from 2022, which includes a solid offensive line in front of junior quarterback Kadyn Leon and fellow class of 2024 standout Nico Hamilton at running back.

Complementing the offensive attack is an experienced defense that has surrendered a mere 10 points a game on average.

Will it be enough for the Cavaliers to take it back to 2019 — the last time the team defeated their in-city rival—and pull of the win? 

In the land of 6A Texas football, anything can happen under the Friday night lights.

Texas high school football gets underway on Friday night with one of two USA TODAY HSS Super 25 top 10 teams in action as No. 7 Duncanville heads to Lake Ridge. 

The Panthers are 2-0 on the year and continuing an impressive streak from last season’s 15-0 team that finished No. 5 in the nation. And the Class 6A juggernauts are only gaining momentum, led by junior four-star QB Keelon Russell and LSU commit Caden Durham in the backfield. 

For the Eagles, the season has been tough sledding so far, with the team still searching for its first win of 2023—while attempting to end a playoff drought that began in 2018. The talent is there, too, with dual-threat QB Kennen Miller running the offense behind an impressive offensive line that features seniors Tharon Pitts, Ndubuisi Wokocha and Joey Glendenning.

Can Lake Ridge turn the tables on last year’s 44-6 loss? Anything can happen under the lights of Friday night…

It’s a CIF Southern Section showdown on Friday night as Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) takes on Orange Lutheran (Calif.).

The matchup features two of the top teams in the Golden State’s high school football landscape in 2023, with both looking for a fourth win on the season.

For the Lancers, it’s a homecoming game that would provide a nice bounceback from the tough loss to Arizona power Chandler last week, which knocked Orange Lutheran out of the Super 25.

For the Trailblazers, it’s the chance to play spoiler on a ceremonial night, the grandest of stages, while continuing the unbeaten steak in 2023.

Simply put, it’s Mission League vs. Trinity League, a battle of No. 1s under the Friday night lights in SoCal — if ever there was a can’t-miss matchup this would be it.

All eyes are on the Sunshine State this week as the USA TODAY HSS Super 25 clashes continue with a must-see showdown on Friday night, Sept. 15. 

No. 4 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.) and No. 11 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) are no strangers to the national stage, each having been near the top of the Florida high school football hierarchy for multiple seasons.

For the Patriots, the five-time state champs look to continue a solid 2023 run where the team is 2-0, including a win over St. John’s (D.C.) in the opener.

It’s a young team leading the way for American Heritage, with sophomores Dia Bell (quarterback) and Malachi Toney (wide receiver) headlining an impressive offense.

Will the Patriots have enough to hold off No. 4 Madonna?

The Lions are a top 5 team for a reason, having won Super 25 games against St. Frances Academy ( Baltimore, Md.) and Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.).

Led by N.C. State commit Cedrick Bailey and five-star Ohio State commit Jeremiah Smith, the offense has continued to shred defenses, averaging just over 45 points a game.

On the other side of the ball, the defense has been equally unmatched, allowing only 39 points in the first three games.

However, South Florida football is…well, South Florida football. Whatever happened in the past—or shines bright on paper—has little bearing between the lines on Friday night.
