Christopher Nolan finally won a Best Director Oscar, and Steven Spielberg was the one to give it to him

Legendary filmmaker Christopher Nolan has finally won his Oscar.

One of the best directors of all time has finally won his Oscar, and he got it in the absolute best way possible.

Christopher Nolan, the auteur behind such classic films as The Dark Knight, Memento, Inception and Dunkirk, won the Academy Award for Best Director on Sunday night for his latest masterpiece, Oppenheimer.

Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg presented Nolan the award, which shows highlights a fantastic generational passing of the torch from one all-time director to another.

Nolan has only been nominated for Best Director once before for Dunkirk, so this makes his first victory on his second attempt in the category.

His win is notable not only because of his stature in the industry, but because of his status as one of the few household name filmmakers left working.

Nolan gave a very commendable speech after accepting his long-awaited Oscar, one where he praised his producing partner and wife Emma Thomas and thanked his Oppenheimer cast and crew.

So many have been eagerly awaiting Nolan’s Oscar win after he got infamously snubbed for The Dark Knight back in 2009, but it’s better late than never. Nolan really has finally won his Academy Award.

Steven Spielberg’s hysterical Oscars reaction might already be the best GIF of 2024

BEST GIF OF 2024 INCOMING

Steven Spielberg is one of the best filmmakers of all time, but he might’ve just turned into one of the best GIFs of 2024 during Sunday’s Oscars.

During a segment featuring Barbie stars America Ferrera and Kate McKinnon, the two joked about McKinnon finding out that Jurassic Park isn’t actually a documentary.

During one of McKinnon’s quips, the camera cut to Spielberg delivering the reaction of the night and a GIF that will surely flood your social media feed in the weeks and months to come.

Seriously, this is priceless, and we are so glad it now exists for us to use when we need to react to something on the internet.

Spielberg is such a good sport for participating in this gag, and we’re dually happy that we have this reaction from him now to use in all of our tweets.

This is what the Oscars are all about! New GIFs!

How many Oscars does Steven Spielberg have?

A win for ‘The Fabelmans’ puts Spielberg in an exclusive club.

A lot of folks might consider Steven Spielberg to be – if not the best – then the most important director in Hollywood in the past, oh, 50 years.

Since his directorial full-length feature debut in 1971 with Duel, Spielberg has wowed audiences, brough groundbreaking technology to the big screen, and given us some all-time memorable films. Remember, this is the guy who directed Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurrasic Park, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, Lincoln, and The Post. Spielberg has an incredibly high batting average in Hollywood.

He’s competing at the 95th Academy Awards this year with perhaps his most personal film yet, The Fabelmans, a semi-autobiographical film he directed and co-wrote. It’s a mix of a coming-of-age story, a family drama, and a fun study on film history. It centers around a boy named Sammy, an aspiring filmmaker grappling with his dysfunctional family. It also features a short, wild performance from Judd Hirsch.

It’s not the first time Spielberg has been nominated for an Oscar, of course. The 76-year-old was first nominated for Best Director in 1978 for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The Fabelmans is his ninth Best Director nomination, and films directed by Spielberg have been nominated for Best Picture seven times, the first being E.T. in 1983.

And should Spielberg win for The Fabelmans, it won’t be his first Oscars win either.

He’s won Best Director twice, both for films in the 1990s; 1994’s Schindler’s List and 1999’s Saving Private Ryan. The former, Schindler’s List, also garnered Spielberg his lone Best Picture win.

When Spielberg was nominated for Best Director this year for The Fabelmans, he tied Martin Scorsese for the second-most all-time nominations in the category with nine. William Wyler has the most with 12.

And should Spielberg win Best Director for The Fabelmans, he will join Wyler and Frank Capra in a three-way tie for second place for the most wins with three. John Ford has the most Best Director wins with four.

As for Best Picture? Well, it seems like Spielberg thinks Top Gun: Maverick should win. Perhaps his public endorsement of the film would be enough for his Minority Report collaborator Tom Cruise.

Steven Spielberg gives Tom Cruise and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ the highest compliment ahead of the Oscars

A reminder that we need to see Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise work together again.

You can count one of the greatest directors of all time as a fan of Top Gun: Maverick, the high-flying action drama starring Tom Cruise that dominated theaters last summer.

Steven Spielberg caught up with Cruise at this year’s Oscar nominees luncheon earlier this week. In an exchange between the former collaborators caught on camera — see below — Spielberg tells Cruise that he “saved Hollywood’s [butt]” with Maverick.

“And you might have saved theatrical distribution,” Spielberg tells Cruise. “Seriously, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ might have saved the entire theatrical industry.”

Maverick was just the second film released amid the pandemic to gross more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office, joining the exclusive company of Spider-Man: No Way Home. And in the domestic box office, Maverick is the fifth-highest grossing film of all-time, topping $718 million. It’s the only non-Marvel and non-Avatar film in the top five.

Unlike the third installment of the third Spider-Man series, Maverick has been nominated for multiple Academy Awards, hence Cruise’s presence at the awards luncheon. In addition to starring in the film, Cruise is also credited as a producer.

Cruise and Spielberg’s films are both competing at this year’s Oscars. Both Maverick and Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans are nominated for Best Picture. The Fabelmans is up for six other awards – including Judd Hirsch for Best Supporting Actor – while Maverick is nominated for five others, including sound, editing, original song, visual effects, and adapted screenplay.

Despite great performances by Cruise, and co-stars Glen Powell and Miles Teller, Maverick didn’t land any nominations for acting. Cruise has never won an acting Oscar, but would be credited with a win as a producer should Maverick win Best Picture. Cruise was last nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2000’s Magnolia. Though, we all think he should’ve at least been nominated for pulling off this insane stunt in Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation.

Spielberg and Cruise haven’t worked together on a film since 2005’s War of the Worlds. Before that, they also teamed up for 2002’s Minority Report. Perhaps we’ll see them work on another film together if Cruise can take a break from death-defying stunts in Mission Impossible sequels.

10 key takeaways from the 95th Oscar nominations, including Top Gun’s surprising misses

Breaking down the 2023 Academy Awards nomination’s surprises, snubs, favorites and more.

The 95th Academy Award nominations have made their way to the forefront of the culture conversation as of Tuesday morning.

While some of the awards love was expected (Top Gun: Maverick! Everything Everywhere All at Once!), other beams of approval came with a bit of a surprise (All Quiet on the Western Front! To Leslie?!).

After Oscar winner Riz Ahmed and Girls alum Allison Williams revealed this year’s slate of nominees, it became clear that some films are in perfect positioning for easy awards. Others, however, will remain in the dark as campaigning continues on for the little gold men.

In a post-pandemic Academy landscape, anything is possible, and no race is settled.

Let’s look at 10 key takeaways from this year’s nominations and what they mean for the 95th ceremony and the Oscars as a whole.

The show itself will take place on Sunday, March 12.

Halo producer reveals that Steven Spielberg is a ‘true gamer’

In an interview with Yahoo, Halo the TV show’s producer Kiki Wolfkill revealed Spielberg was initially attached to produce the show back in 2013.

Halo the TV show’s producer Kiki Wolfkill has revealed that the world’s most famous director Steven Spielberg has been heavily involved in getting video game stories into TV and cinema.

In an interview with Yahoo, she revealed that Spielberg was initially attached to produce the Halo TV show back in 2013. However, after going through several years of “development hell”, he left the role. Wolfkill revealed that the acclaimed director remained on the project as a “key creative partner”.

Of Spielberg she said, “Spielberg is a true gamer. He truly loves games, which is one of the things that was so exciting when he signed on and in the first meeting.” Spielberg has long been linked to video games. There are pictures of Spielberg in his 30s which show him posing in front of Space Invaders and Missile Command cabinets. He even reportedly had a Donkey Kong cabinet in his office.

Many of his films have been turned into video games over the years. The Indiana Jones trilogy, the Back To The Future trilogy, and The Goonies have all been made into successful video games. Spielberg was one of the first directors who saw the potential reach of film turned game. Not all of his movie’s games were successful. E.T. for Atari is often unfairly blamed for the crash of the entire video game industry.

However, Spielberg has recently set his sights on doing the reverse. He adapted Ready Player One, a novel based on experiences from many real video games, for the big screen to great success. While Halo’s development was rocky, he still saw the potential.

On this Wolfkill went on to say, “I think there is a realization of not just the depth of the worlds and the characters but, more importantly, how deeply people connect to those characters and those worlds.” Films adapted from video games have long had a bad reputation but Wolfkill believes that is changing. “There’s a little bit of a different perspective from Hollywood on these video games,” she explained. “They really are getting to treat them like the world-class IPs we as gamers have always thought of them as.”

New movies from Paul Thomas Anderson, Adam McKay, Joel Coen, Steven Spielberg, Aaron Sorkin, Guillermo del Toro and more!

You have a big month in front of you. Maybe you have travel plans or gifts to buy. But you also have movies you need to catch in theaters.

If you’re trying to plan out which movies should be at the top of your list for theater outings in December, we’ve got you covered, because there’s a ton of great stuff on the way.

Note that all of the movies mentioned below are hitting the theaters for the first time during the month of December 2021. Movies that are already in theaters (e.g. King RichardHouse of Gucci or tick, tick…BOOM!) were not included in this list.

Apologies in advance to fans of mega-franchises like Spider-Man and The Matrix. Much like Sing 2 starring Matthew McConaughey, I’m confident that tons of people are planning to watch those movies and don’t need any sort of recommendation from me beforehand.

Speaking of which, make sure to check out some other lists of ours to see other recommendations we have for shows and movies to watch and some video games to play:
