Badgers big man having quite the season

Steven Crowl is on the verge of something special

The Badgers men’s basketball team is out to a 16-4 start to the season, 8-1 in the Big Ten, and big man Steven Crowl has been having quite the year. Crowl is averaging 11.9 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game this season.

Brandon Harrison, lead of the Badgers basketball team’s brand communications has pointed out some of the things that that big man has done this year to make his campaign special.

Crowl nearly notched a triple-double in the Badgers 91-79 win over Indiana on Jan. 19, securing 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, becoming the third 7-footer in a major conference to reach those numbers since the turn of the century.

On top of that, the big man is just two assists shy of passing Frank Kaminsky (188) for the most career assists for a 7-footer in the Big Ten in over 20 years.

Wisconsin takes down Michigan State 70-57

Badgers extend their win streak to six games in a row

The Badgers men’s basketball team improved to 7-2 on the season Tuesday night, taking down Michigan State on the road 70-57 in their first Big Ten matchup of the year.

Wisconsin was able to get out to an 11-2 lead in the first 4:40 and they never trailed in the contest. For the second straight game, they never trailed from beginning to end.

In the first half, AJ Storr led the way with 12 points (4-4 FG, 2-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT) while Steven Crowl was right behind him with 11 points of his own (4-8 FG, 3-3 3Pt). The Badgers went into the break up 34-23.

Although Michigan State was able to mount a comeback in the second half led by Tyson Walker’s 18 points, Wisconsin never allowed them to take the lead.

Wisconsin finished the game a perfect 14-for-14 from the free-throw line while also ending with a sizeable advantage in rebounds (36 to 22) and second-chance points, outscoring the Spartans 19-to-8 in that category.

AJ Storr finished with a game-high 22 points (8-11 FG, 4-6 3Pt, 2-2 FT), also adding five rebounds, while Steven Crowl ended with 18 points (6-12 FG, 4-4 3Pt, 2-2 FT), six rebounds and five assists.

The Badgers will take on top-ranked Arizona on the road Saturday at 2:15PM.

Greg Gard was not happy last night after Wisconsin’s loss to Providence

Greg Gard was not happy list night after Wisconsin’s loss to Providence

Wisconsin fell 72-59 to Providence last night to drop to 1-2 on the young season.

A road game at Providence is never an easy task, though the Friars did see coaching and roster turnover this offseason. It wasn’t necessarily the loss that angered many, including Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard. It was more how the loss happened.

The Badgers shot only 33.9% from the floor, 25% from three, and had no answer for the Providence offensive attack.

Wisconsin’s big men Steven Crowl and Tyler Wahl, especially, had maybe the worst showing of their careers. Crowl finished with 4 points on 1/5 shooting with 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 turnovers. Wahl, meanwhile, had 6 points on 3/9 shooting with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 turnovers.

Gard did not mince words about the team’s effort after the contest:

Wisconsin is back home on Friday night to face Robert Morris.

Three Wisconsin basketball veterans to use COVID year, return in 2024-25

Good news for the Badgers entering this year and next:

Wisconsin basketball officially got its 2023-24 season underway last week with the running of Bascom Hill. The team will first take the court on November 6 for a home matchup with Arkansas State.

The Badgers have high expectations entering the season after returning Chucky Hepburn, Tyler Wahl, Steven Crowl and others, and also adding guard A.J. Storr in the transfer portal. They are a veteran group that figures to yet again compete for a Big Ten title.

Before we get into the season, there was a positive piece of news coming out of the program yesterday: Wisconsin officials said that Steven Crowl, Max Klesmit and Carter Gilmore all plan to use their COVID year of eligibility and return in 2024-25.

The Badgers will return their veterans as an influx of high school talent joins the program. Wisconsin’s class of 2024 ranks No. 27 nationally with top point guard Daniel Freitag leading the group.

This lines up to be a successful few years at the Kohl Center.

Greg Gard ranked in Top 25 of CBB coaches list

The 2022-2023 MBB season was a disappointing one for the Badgers, but their head coach Greg Gard was listed in the top 25 coaches.

The 2022-2023 men’s basketball season was a disappointing one for the Badgers, but their head coach Greg Gard was listed in the top 25 coaches by the College Basketball Report. Coming in at 25th overall on the 40-coach list, Gard remains highly regarded entering his ninth season at the helm.

In 2023, all five of the Badgers’ starters (Chucky Hepburn, Max Klesmit, Connor Essegian, Tyler Wahl, Steven Crowl) will be returning to Madison as well as the additions of four-star big man Gus Yalden, three-star forward Nolan Winter and three-star guard John Blackwell.

Over his previous eight campaigns, Gard’s squad has produced a 164-93 overall record while winning two Big Ten regular season titles and making the NCAA Tournament six times (counting 2020 when tournament was cancelled).

They missed March Madness for the second time in six years last season, finishing the campaign with a 20-15 record while losing in the semifinals of NIT to North Texas 56-54.

Some wanted Gard to lose his job, but he ultimately retained his role in Madison, though he could be on the hot seat if the season goes south again in 2023-2024.

2024 PG Daniel Freitag announces his college decision

Daniel Freitag, a four-star class of 2024 point guard from Jefferson, Minnesota announced that he has committed to join the Badgers.

Daniel Freitag, a four-star class of 2024 point guard from Jefferson, Minnesota announced that he has committed to join some of his fellow Minnesotans to play college basketball.

The 6-foot-2 athlete chose to head to Madison and play for Greg Gard and his Badger squad. Fellow Minnesota natives like Steven Crowl (Eagan, MN) and class of 2023 recruit Nolan Winter (Lakeville, MN) are amongst the players from his state that will likely be his teammates at Wisconsin.

Freitag is set to play for Southern California Academy for his final season of high school basketball in 2023 before joining the Badgers. He is the 10th ranked point guard in his class and could end up being the greatest recruit that Greg Gard has reeled in.

Additionally, he became the second player to commit to Wisconsin for the class of 2024, joining three-star Jack Robison (Lakeville, MN) in Madison.

Four-star guard set to announce college decision Friday

Daniel Freitag, a four-star guard from California has got his potential teams down to five, including Wisconsin, choosing his school Friday.

Daniel Freitag, a four-star point guard from Castaic, California has narrowed down his potential teams to five, including Wisconsin, and will announce his commitment Friday.

Freitag is a member of the class of 2024 and still has one more season of high school basketball at Southern California Academy. The 6-foot-2 athlete is originally from Jefferson, Minnesota, which may explain his potential attraction to Greg Gard and his program at Wisconsin.

In the end, multiple players including Tyler Wahl (Lakeville, MN) and Steven Crowl (Eagan, MN) are from Freitag’s home state. Friday’s announcement could be a massive one for Gard and his staff if they can reel in a talent as highly touted as Freitag.

Additionally, as a multi-sport athlete, he also holds an offer from the Badger football team as a four-star wide receiver.

The Badgers men’s basketball team released the highlights for their star big man Steven Crowl on Tuesday. The 7-footer averaged 12.1 points and 6.9 rebounds while shooting 51 percent from the field.

Crowl and the Badgers failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last five years, but they did make a deep run to semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). During that run, Crowl produced a career-high 36 points in the first round of the tournament against Bradley.

Moving forward, Crowl will look to mentor both incoming big men from the class of 2023, Gus Yalden and Nolan Winter. With Tyler Wahl also returning in 2023, Wisconsin’s frontcourt should be much deeper next season.

Wisconsin men’s basketball 2023-24 Big Ten matchups announced

The Badgers men’s basketball team had a relatively disappointing season in 2022-2023, finishing the regular season with 17-14 record.

The Badgers men’s basketball team had a relatively disappointing season in 2022-2023, finishing the regular season with 17-14 record while missing the NCAA Tournament.

They did make participate in the NIT (National Invitation Tournament), making it all the way to the semifinals where they fell to North Texas 56-54. Overall, they did salvage what was a challenging campaign, giving their roster additional in-game practice together.

Now with the entire starting lineup returning for the 2023-2024 season, Greg Gard and his staff have an opportunity to get redemption. After the Badgers went 9-11 in Big Ten matchups this past season, here’s how their conference contests will pan out in 2023-2024.

Transfer commit backs out of joining Badgers

Wyoming transfer guard Noah Reynolds announced Wednesday that he is backing out of his intention to commit to Wisconsin.

Wyoming transfer guard Noah Reynolds announced Wednesday that he is backing out of his intention to commit to Wisconsin. He has officially reopened his recruitment in the portal.

Reynolds originally stated on April 5 that he’d be joining the Badgers in 2023 after spending two seasons with Wyoming. The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 14.5 points in his second year with the Cowboys and was expected to give the Badgers a big boost in the backcourt.

Considering the fact that Wisconsin reeled in 6-foot-6 wing AJ Storr from St. John’s on Thursday (April 13), it’s possible that Reynolds felt like his role wouldn’t be what he wanted in Madison.

Although it’s tough to see him change his mind, Greg Gard and his staff could now acquire an additional asset from the portal, potentially addressing their need for another big man behind Steven Crowl and Tyler Wahl.
