American Century Championship leaderboard: Tracking 49ers

An updated look at where current and former San Francisco 49ers rank on the American Century Championship leaderboard.

The American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood in Tahoe began Friday and features a handful of 49ers and 49ers alumni.

The only current 49ers player in the field is kicker Robbie Gould, who has right tackle Mike McGlinchey tagging along as his caddy. Former 49ers Steve Young, Jerry Rice and Alex Smith are also playing in this year’s tournament with varying degrees of success.

This tournament takes on a little bit different system than traditional golf scoring in order to level the playing field some. Their scoring system is a modified version of Stableford rules according to the Golf Channel. Here’s how it works:

Albatross (Double-Eagle): 10 points
Hole-in-one: 8 points
Eagle: 6 points
Birdie: 3 points
Par: 1 point
Bogey: 0 points
Double bogey or worse: -2 points

We’ll keep this 49ers leaderboard updated throughout the three-day event. Here’s where the past and present 49ers stand:

Steve Young: Jets are a good place for Zach Wilson to land

Young thinks Wilson is talented enough to end the pattern of poor quarterback play in New York with help from Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh.

Another former BYU quarterback thinks Zach Wilson to the Jets is a lock at No. 2.

Hall of Famer Steve Young told ESPN’s Rich Cimini on the “Flight Deck” podcast that he believes Wilson will become a Jet on Thursday night. That part isn’t that shocking. People have connected Wilson to the Jets for weeks. What was surprising, though, is that Young said the Jets have turned the corner as an organization and actually insinuated New York would be a good place for Wilson to play.

“Look, I mean, if you asked me a year ago the bottom five places for a quarterback in the NFL, I would’ve picked the Jets as one of them,” Young said. “But there have been significant changes.”

A lot of that has to do with Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh, who Young credited with revamping the reputation of a franchise not known for developing quarterbacks. The Jets effectively squandered three young quarterbacks in the last decade – including two top-five picks – but Young thinks that pattern will end with Wilson.

“Every generation has a handful of guys that define the position,” Young said. “[Wilson]’s set up to be one of those. Now, can he go get it? Can he go do it? There are a lot of filters and a lot of hurdles and a lot of things you have to go through to get there, but I think he’s the No. 2 pick for the Jets because of what that looks like, because of his potential.”

Young already said the Jets “committed” to drafting Wilson earlier this month – Douglas avoided questions about the comments – and effectively doubled down on that assessment just 24 hours before the pick needs to be made.

“In the NFL draft, nothing is truly set until you put the name in,” Young said, “but short of some terrible review or something that comes out that changes the nature of what they’ve underwritten for Zach, it feels like there’s no question he’s their guy. They’ve had him locked in for quite a while.”

Young also praised Douglas for his preparation with this pick. From Young’s perspective, Douglas and the Jets did a lot of due diligence with Wilson before settling on him.

“Joe Douglas doesn’t play the fool. The man is very intent. He’s got rings on his fingers. He knows what he’s looking for,” Young said. “He knows this is kind of a defining moment for him. I think he’s done whatever he possibly can to vet this situation and it became pretty obvious to me that they’ve locked in on him.”

David Carr drops a Steve Young comparison for Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa

NFL analyst and former quarterback David Carr dropped a Steve Young comparison for former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

This story originally appeared on Dolphins Wire.

Consider former No. 1 overall pick David Carr among the supporters of Tua Tagovailoa’s case to be the future behind center for the Miami Dolphins for the long-term. Why else would Carr, who now works for NFL Network, drop a Steve Young comparison for Tagovailoa on the heels of an up and down rookie campaign in 2020?

Carr didn’t hold back with the enthusiasm of his support when talking about the Dolphins quarterback on air yesterday. Not one bit.

“…when you look at the film, you see similarities, and you see why people get excited and why the Miami Dolphins are excited. He looks like Steve Young. I mean, that’s the guy he is going to turn into. It’s just going to take a little time,” said Carr.

“You’ve got boot action, you move him out of the pocket, he sees everything very well. He gets through his first two progressions. He has the over-route right in front of him, makes a nice throw over four or five defenders, keeps it low to protect his football player. And again, it looks just like Steve Young. He’s the same type of player.”

Of course, getting those consistent results out of Tagovailoa are the next step for the Dolphins in their path to becoming a perennial contender. But if they can do that, then perhaps the comparison to Steve Young can start to pick up a little bit of steam and — a few championships later, look to be right on the money. But one step at a time, right?

Carr would like to see that patience, too.

“I think the biggest thing with Tua is: let’s just have some patience. The Miami Dolphins clearly have patience, they didn’t go out and get another quarterback…I think they love the fact that they have Tua. I think he’s going to be a great quarterback.”

NFL analyst offers impressive player comparison for Tua Tagovailoa

Former Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa is heading into his second NFL season, but has rawn plenty of criticism for his rookie-season …

Former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has completed his rookie season. He started the latter half of the year for the Miami Dolphins, but his performance has drawn plenty of criticism from fans and analysts.

NFL analyst David Carr offers strong counterpoints to the anti-Tagovailoa mob.

He has a strong player comparison for Tagovailoa.

Carr believes that Tagovailoa resembles a young Steve Young, and in more ways than just being a lefty.

“…when you look at the film, you see similarities, and you see why people get excited and why the Miami Dolphins are excited. He looks like Steve Young. I mean, that’s the guy he is going to turn into. It’s just going to take a little time,” said Carr.

Young went on to have a very succesful NFL career, which is headlined by three Super Bowl championships.

9 takeaways from Joe Douglas’ press conference on the Sam Darnold trade

The Sam Darnold trade and the Jets’ draft plans were among the takeaways from Joe Douglas’ press conference.

Joe Douglas made a franchise-altering decision by trading Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers on Monday.

The general manager spoke to the media on Tuesday and discussed his reasoning behind trading the former No. 3 overall pick. He also mentioned where the Jets are likely headed with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Douglas also talked about how the Jets can’t make the same mistakes by failing to build a great supporting cast around the quarterback. Finally, he spoke about the possibility of adding a veteran quarterback to go with a rookie.

Let’s take a closer look at nine takeaways from Douglas’s press conference.

Jets’ GM Joe Douglas gives hint who they will take No. 2 overall

The Jets seemed to give a huge hint they are locked in on BYU QB Zach Wilson in the upcoming draft.

A day after Sam Darnold was sent to the Carolina Panthers, New York Jets GM Joe Douglas met the media.

Douglas said if the team was selecting any lower than second overall, it would have kept Darnold as its quarterback.

That sounds a bit odd for a team that was only able to get a second- and fourth-round pick in 2022 and sixth-rounder in 2021 for the QB it took with the third overall pick from USC in 2018.

That out of the way, Douglas was asked if ESPN’s Steve Young was correct in his assessment the Jets were focused on BYU QB Zach Wilson with the second overall pick in the NFL draft later this month.

Lamar Jackson rushes into 12th place on all-time QB rushing yards list

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson moves past Kordell Stewart 12th all-time on QB rushing yards list.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson continues to show his rushing ability, passing Kordell Stewart for 12th place on the all-time quarterback rushing yards list.

Jackson came into Week 17 with 2,809 rushing yards, needing 66 yards to move up. He passed Stewart in the third quarter on a six-yard run against the Cincinnati Bengals. Jackson just moved into 13th place in Week 16 after passing Jim Harbaugh.

Perhaps more impressive than the feat itself is just how quickly Jackson is rising up the list, doing so in his 37th career start. Stewart played for three teams in the NFL from 1995-2005 where he rushed for 2,874 rushing yards, including two seasons with the Ravens in 2004 and 2005. It took Stewart 87 career starts / 125 career games to reach his own spot on the rushing list.

The top five all-time rushing quarterbacks in NFL history include Michael Vick (6,109 yards), Cam Newton (5,257 yards), Randall Cunningham (4,928 yards), Russell Wilson (4,416 yards), and Steve Young (4,239 yards). Jackson would pass Vick before the end of 2024 (he’d be just 27 years old and in his seventh season) if he continues to average 62.4 yards-per-game.

Coming off a sensational season in 2019, Jackson surpassed Michael Vick’s record for rushing yards by a quarterback in a season by Week 15. Jackson would finish the season with 1,206 rushing yards. While Jackson’s rushing numbers are not compared to what they were a season ago, he still manages to break free from defenders and run for big gains more often than not.

Expect Jackson to continue pounding the ball and maybe one season hold the record for most rushes and rushing yards by a quarterback in NFL history.
