9 takeaways from Joe Douglas’ press conference on the Sam Darnold trade

The Sam Darnold trade and the Jets’ draft plans were among the takeaways from Joe Douglas’ press conference.

Joe Douglas made a franchise-altering decision by trading Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers on Monday.

The general manager spoke to the media on Tuesday and discussed his reasoning behind trading the former No. 3 overall pick. He also mentioned where the Jets are likely headed with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Douglas also talked about how the Jets can’t make the same mistakes by failing to build a great supporting cast around the quarterback. Finally, he spoke about the possibility of adding a veteran quarterback to go with a rookie.

Let’s take a closer look at nine takeaways from Douglas’s press conference.

Joe Douglas decided to bet on his own guy rather than stick with Sam Darnold

Jets general manager Joe Douglas made the decision to bet on his own guy rather than stick with Sam Darnold by trading him on Monday.

Most NFL coaches and general managers prefer to have “their guys” in as many places as possible. Familiarity and relationships play a crucial role in achieving success, as personnel you can trust to get the job done on a weekly basis come few and far between. And when it comes to front office-player relationships, well, players brought in by the current regime tend to have a longer leash than those who weren’t.

Sam Darnold wasn’t brought in by Joe Douglas.

Douglas essentially had no say in who his quarterback was going to be when he became the Jets’ general manager in June 2019. Darnold was just drafted the year before and, for better or worse, was the quarterback New York trusted to lead it back to the top of the AFC East. Even though Darnold wasn’t “his guy,” Douglas wasn’t going to move on so soon from a second-year signal-caller still loaded with potential.

On Monday, Douglas finally got his chance to bet on the quarterback of his choosing. Sitting in prime position to land BYU’s Zach Wilson or Ohio State’s Justin Fields with the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Douglas shipped Darnold to the Panthers in exchange for three draft picks, including a second-round selection in the 2022 draft. In doing so, Douglas all but guaranteed he is picking a quarterback with his first selection.

It never made much sense for Douglas to bet $18.8 million — the total of Darnold’s fifth-year option — on the embattled 23-year-old’s ability to turn his career around under a new coaching staff. If Douglas picked up Darnold’s fifth-year option to ensure he didn’t hit free agency next offseason and he flopped again in 2021, Douglas would have faced major backlash for passing up on the opportunity to land a potentially elite prospect in Fields or Wilson.

Trading Darnold and betting on a rookie signal-caller to be the one to get the Jets back on track absolves Douglas of that burden. Nobody is going to fault New York’s second-year general manager for going in a different direction at quarterback and bringing in his own guy at the position. Not many general managers in football stick with a quarterback they didn’t draft longer than they absolutely have to, especially when the results are subpar at best.

There is no guarantee the rookie quarterback Douglas settles on will meet expectations, but at least the GM can take solace in the fact that it was his draft pick and not that of a shunned general manager. What the Jets get out of the quarterback position in the years to come is now solely on Douglas, a man who built his career on scouting.

Considering how poorly Darnold fared in his time with the Jets, that doesn’t sound like too bad of a bet.

Panthers welcome Sam Darnold with hilarious meme

The Carolina Panthers welcomed Sam Darnold with a hilarious meme following their trade with the Jets.

The Carolina Panthers kicked off the Sam Darnold era with a laugh.

Carolina acquired Darnold from New York on Monday for a 2021 sixth-round pick, a 2022 second-round pick, and a 2022 fourth-round pick. After the trade became official, the Panthers’ social media team welcomed Darnold with a hilarious meme that dates back to his second NFL season.

The tweet is a reference to when Darnold came down with mononucleosis after Week 1 in 2019. The Jets ruled Darnold out indefinitely until he got medically cleared by their team doctors, which led to this ESPN graphic, which was widely mocked and memed at the time.

Darnold ended up only missing three games and finished out the regular season healthy.

Darnold’s tenure with the Jets didn’t go according to plan. He was drafted in 2018 with the hope of being the Jets’ franchise quarterback for the next decade. However, a combination of poor play and a bad supporting cast ultimately decided his fate.

The Panthers will get the next crack at Darnold with the hope of revitalizing his career. He will be reunited with his favorite receiver, Robby Anderson, and should receive better coaching from Matt Rhule and his staff.

Panthers will exercise Sam Darnold’s 5th-year option

After trading for Sam Darnold, the Panthers will be exercising his fifth-year option.

Much of the discourse regarding Sam Darnold’s trade market revolved around his unattractive fifth-year option.

However, after acquiring Darnold in a package for three draft picks Monday, the Panthers plan on picking that option up, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones. The Panthers have until May to make that official. Doing so would cost Carolina around $18.8 million, fully guaranteed.

Darnold’s fifth-year option likely played a part in New York’s decision to move him to Carolina. Now the Jets can reset the clock on the quarterback contract with whoever they select at No. 2, something Douglas hinted at in a statement regarding the trade.

“I want to publicly acknowledge the commitment, dedication, and professionalism Sam displayed while with the Jets. He is a tough-minded, talented football player whose NFL story has not been written yet,” Douglas said. “While all these things are true, this move is in the short- and long-term best interests for both this team and him. We thank Sam for all of his work on behalf of this organization and wish him well as he continues his career.”

Jets GM Joe Douglas wishes Sam Darnold well after trade to Panthers

Jets general manager Joe Douglas publicly thanked Sam Darnold for his time with the team and wished him well with the Panthers.

Sam Darnold’s time with the New York Jets is officially up.

The Jets agreed to trade Darnold to the Carolina Panthers Monday in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round draft pick, a 2022 second-round draft pick, and a 2022 fourth-round draft pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Panthers will pick up Darnold’s fifth-year option, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas released a statement following the trade to personally thank Darnold for his contributions to the organization.

Darnold didn’t have much help, but he never lived up to high expectations after being drafted third overall out of USC in 2018. He missed time in each of his three seasons with the Jets and didn’t perform well when he was on the field. Darnold threw for 8,097 yards, 45 touchdowns and 39 interceptions to go along with a 59.8 percent completion percentage in 38 games. He went 13-25 as a starter.

The fact that Darnold wasn’t drafted by Douglas, but rather former Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan, couldn’t have helped. Maccagnan moved up to draft Darnold after a trade with the Indianapolis Colts.

Now Douglas will get the opportunity to bring in his own quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

What can Sam Darnold add to the Carolina Panthers’ passing game?

After Monday’s surprise trade, former Jets quarterback Sam Darnold gets a new beginning after three years of schematic disaster.

If you had any question about what the New York Jets were going to do with the quarterback position, wonder no more. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets have traded former first-round pick Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers for a 2021 sixth-round pick and second- and fourth-round picks in 2022.

“I want to publicly acknowledge the commitment, dedication, and professionalism Sam displayed while with the Jets. He is a tough-minded, talented football player whose NFL story has not been written yet,” Jets general manager Joe Douglas said in a statement. “While all these things are true, this move is in the short- and long-term best interests for both this team and him. We thank Sam for all of his work on behalf of this organization and wish him well as he continues his career.”

The Panthers confirmed the report in their own unique fashion.

It clearly says that the Jets are all-in on one of the quarterbacks in the 2021 draft class, and it also says — to a point — that the Panthers don’t believe any of their preferred draftable quarterbacks will be there with the eighth overall pick. Either that, or there are no favorable trading partners.

It’s a fascinating move for the Panthers, who signed veteran Teddy Bridgewater to a three-year, $63 million contract with $33 million guaranteed just last season. Bridgewater is on the books for $22,953,125 against the cap this season, so maybe he’s available in a trade. In any event. Darnold is now Carolina’s guy — or, at the very least, will be in a quarterback duel.

From a contractual perspective, Darnold could be no more than a short-term option, and let the word “option” be your guide. The Jets had until May 3 to pick up Darnold’s fifth-year option, and now that decision rests with the Panthers. One assumes they’ll do just that.

Selected with the third overall pick in the 2018 draft out of USC, Darnold was a fairly major disappointment with the Jets over three seasons, though that wasn’t all his fault. Between 2018 offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates, 2019-2020 “head coach” and “offensive play-designer” Adam Gase, and an iffy group of targets, Darnold didn’t have a ton to work with. But it’s still Darnold who has completed just 59.8% of his passes and thrown 45 touchdowns to 39 interceptions over his first three NFL seasons.

Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady, in his first NFL season in 2020 fresh off his work with Joe Burrow at LSU, did his level best with Bridgewater’s limitations, and you have to assume that Brady was in on this decision, so Darnold must fit the ideal.

What is that ideal? Brady explained it in January, 2020.

“The most important thing that we do from a system standpoint is we find out what our players do well so we can put them in position to have success. . . Now, it’s critical that we find a vision for each and every player. The offense that we’re looking to have is one that applies pressure… We can do that in multiple ways, whether that’s formations, whether that’s personnel groupings or tempo. It’s our job to exploit mismatches and move guys around to get them the matchups that we want. Applying pressure, getting your speed in space, making defenses defend every blade of grass and just let your players do what they do best.”

[jwplayer NqJrBhxy]

Last season, the Panthers were highly successful in both play-action and bootleg concepts, though they didn’t use them too often. Burrow was a plus thrower on the move and in play-action, so perhaps that was more a play to Bridgewater’s preferences. Bridgewater was fairly aggressive with the deep ball, completing 25 of 55 passes of 20 air yards or more for 892 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions. Bridgewater has never been an incredible deep-ball guy, so again, that may have been about the quarterback Brady had as opposed to the offensive design he preferred.

As for Darnold, we don’t really know what he is based on three years with the Jets. There wasn’t a lot of aggression in the Jets’ passing game last season; Darnold completed just 11 of 38 deep passes last season for 303 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. In 2020, Darnold was also one of the few starting quarterbacks in the NFL whose efficiency wasn’t improved by play-action — he didn’t throw a single touchdown pass with play-fakes, and managed nine without it.

So, this may be more of a project for Brady than a scheme-fit proposition. In that case, the price is right, though the possibility of jettisoning Bridgewater in favor of a potentially worse player at the game’s most important position doesn’t bode well for his coaching staff’s future.

As for Darnold, he’s now fresh out of excuses, not that he was personally looking for any. Brady has earned more praise as an offensive mind than Gase ever did, and the Panthers have a strong receiver trio in D.J. Moore, Robby Anderson (who caught passes from Darnold in 2018 and 2019), and former Seahawks receiver David Moore. Perhaps this is his redemptive moment with the first half-favorable situation he’s had throughout his NFL career.

Washington not interested in trade for Jets QB Sam Darnold

The Washington Football Team is not interested in acquiring Sam Darnold in a trade with the Jets, per multiple reports.

Don’t expect Sam Darnold to end up in Washington, D.C.

According to NFL Network’s Kim Jones and ESPN’s Diana Russini, the Washington Football Team is no longer interested in acquiring Darnold from the Jets after agreeing to a deal with free agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Athletic’s Connor Hughes said Washington could still be in play for Darnold, but he noted a deal is less likely with Fitzpatrick onboard.

Washington and Fitzpatrick agreed to a one-year deal worth $10 million on Monday. The team also re-signed Taylor Heinicke earlier this offseason, so the two are expected to compete for the starting job.

The Jets are still in the process of evaluating their options at quarterback. The easiest choice is to keep Darnold and hope the new coaching staff can get the most out of him. If the Jets don’t like that, they can trade Darnold and take a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. The third and final option could be to trade for a disgruntled veteran quarterback, such as Houston’s Deshaun Watson.

If the Jets decide to trade Darnold, they may have to do it sooner rather than later. Other teams can’t wait patiently for the Jets to decide on Darnold while figuring out their quarterback plans.

Report: Washington not ruled out of potential Sam Darnold trade after Ryan Fitzpatrick signing

Even after signing Fitzpatrick, there are reports that Washington is still interested in a potential trade for Sam Darnold this offseason.

With the late-night signing of free-agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on Monday, many assumed that the Washington Football Team had finalized their QB room for the 2021 season, and would potentially let it ride through the offseason or add someone in the later rounds of the NFL Draft.

However, there are some new reports coming out that Ron Rivera may not be done quite yet, with an eye towards a potential trade for New York Jets QB Sam Darnold, bringing him in to spice up the quarterback competition this offseason. Washington seems less likely to do so now with Fitzpatrick in the building, but it is reportedly not off of the table.

One thing to note is how complicated this would make the QB competition in camp this fall. A competition between two quarterbacks is already hard to manage with everyone getting enough reps, and adding a third guy into the mix makes it even more difficult. If Washington were to somehow trade for Darnold, it would undoubtedly mean that a QB would be cut, likely Kyle Allen, and then training camp would be a whirlwind of QB rumors as we all look to see who starts.

It seems incredibly unlikely, but Washington is keeping options open. If they can get Darnold for cheap, then why not try it?

Report: 8 teams have called Jets about Sam Darnold

The Jets have received calls from at least eight teams regarding Sam Darnold’s availability.

[jwplayer HUyloLA9]

Joe Douglas indicated that if teams call asking about Sam Darnold, he’ll pick up the phone.

That’s already happened, as eight teams have reached out to the Jets regarding Darnold’s availability, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. ESPN’s Adam Schefter previously reported that teams had called the Jets about Darnold as early as last month.

The teams that have picked up the phone to express their interest in Darnold are unknown at this point. What is known, however, is that there appears to be a trade market forming for the 23-year-old quarterback.

Even with that, the Jets aren’t exactly in a rush to move him. As NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported last month, the Jets will evaluate this year’s draft-eligible quarterbacks before deciding on Darnold. As Breer mentioned, New York will need to get a live look at this year’s quarterbacks, who will be throwing at their respective pro days throughout the month. Trey Lance’s pro day is this coming Friday (March 12), while New York will have to wait until the end of the month to see Zach Wilson (March 26) and Justin Fields (March 31) in action.

Joe Douglas ‘will answer’ if teams call about trading for Jets QB Sam Darnold

Jets general manager Joe Douglas said Wednesday he will listen to offers for Sam Darnold.

Sam Darnold is officially available for the taking.

Joe Douglas said Wednesday that he will take calls from teams interested in trading for Darnold. Douglas deemed Darnold untouchable last offseason, but with the 23-year-old struggling in 2020 and the Jets in possession of the second pick in this year’s NFL draft, that is no longer the case.

Darnold showed signs of regression last season, throwing for just 2,208 yards and nine touchdowns to 11 interceptions in 12 games. Injuries hindered Darnold throughout the year, but when healthy, the USC product’s play remained underwhelming, bringing into question his status as the Jets’ quarterback of the future.

“I will answer the call if it’s made,” Douglas said, per NFL.com’s Nick Shook. “As it pertains to Sam, like I said, Sam, we think, is a dynamic player in this league with unbelievable talent who really has a chance to really hit his outstanding potential moving forward. But, like I said earlier, if calls are made, I will answer ’em.”

The Jets have yet to make a decision on Darnold’s future with the organization. However, New York owning the No. 2 pick in a draft littered with potential franchise quarterbacks like Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, BYU’s Zach Wilson and Ohio State’s Justin Fields, there is a chance Douglas and company ultimately opt to move on from the embattled Darnold.

There is also the chance the Jets roll the dice with Darnold for another year and hope he takes to Mike LaFleur’s west coast offense.

Either way, New York is on the clock with free agency and the draft quickly approaching. With Douglas’s phone now open for business, the Jets could be presented with an offer that determines which direction they go under center in Robert Saleh’s first season as head coach.

“Our stance on Sam hasn’t changed,” Douglas said. “He’s an extremely talented player and he’s very smart, very tough. We have no doubt that Sam is gonna achieve his outstanding potential. Obviously, we’re in the process of gaining as much information as we can leading up through free agency and the draft but our stance on Sam has not changed.”
