Steve Spurrier headed to Austin for Florida at Texas, hopes to meet McConaughey

Former Florida coach Steve Spurrier is heading to Austin for the Gators game against the Texas Longhorns and hopes to fun into a UT celebrity.

Legendary former Florida Gators (and South Carolina Gamecocks) coach Steve Spurrier is heading to Austin for UF’s game with the Texas Longhorns. The 79-year-old ball coach still serves as a program ambassador and consultant for the Gators.

There’s one thing Spurrier and his wife, Jerri, are hoping to do when they are in Austin — meet Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey. The star, who got his big break in Dazed and Confused, is probably the Longhorns most famous fan and serves and “Minister of Culture.”

“Getting ready for Texas, I’m going on this trip,” Spurrier said on “Another Dooley Noted Podcast,” per On3. “I’ve never been to the University of Texas and got permission from the AD … You gotta ask. Can’t just say, ‘Hey, I’m going.’ I’m going with the team, part of the traveling party. And hopefully I see Matthew McConaughey on Saturday. And my wife, Jerri said, ‘we need to see Matthew, if he’s there’ and he’ll be there, I guess.”

Spurrier, who won a Heisman Trophy while at Florida as a player and a National Championship as coach, will be hoping for a big Gators upset on the road at Texas.
