Bellator returns to South Dakota this week with a welterweight bout atop the card, plus two former champions and a recent title challenger on the bill.

Bellator 284 takes place Friday at Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Neiman Gracie[/autotag] (11-3 MMA, 9-3 BMMA) takes on first-time Bellator headliner [autotag]Goiti Yamauchi[/autotag] (27-5 MMA, 13-4 BMMA) at welterweight. Gracie is a -200 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Yamauchi is +150. Our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Gracie as one of two unanimous picks on the main card – but in a rarity, our readers disagree and are backing Yamauchi at a big 58 percent clip.

In the co-feature, former interim heavyweight champion [autotag]Valentin Moldavsky[/autotag] (11-2 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) takes on unbeaten up-and-comer [autotag]Steve Mowry[/autotag] (10-0 MMA, 6-0 BMMA). Moldavsky is more than a 2-1 favorite at the betting window, but he has the narrowest possible edge over Mowry in the picks at 6-5.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Bruna Ellen[/autotag] (6-3 MMA, 4-3 BMMA) takes on former women’s flyweight champion [autotag]Ilima-Lei Macfarlane[/autotag] (11-2 MMA, 10-2 BMMA), who is fighting outside her native Hawaii or homebase of California for just the second time in nearly five years. Macfarlane is a slight favorite at -135, but is a near-unanimous pick with our staff members at 10-1. (It should be noted Macfarlane missed weight for for the first time in her MMA career. She came in at 129 pounds at Thursday’s weigh-ins.)

[autotag]Gokhan Saricam[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) is a 2-1 favorite in his heavyweight bout against [autotag]Said Sowma[/autotag] (8-3 MMA, 2-2 BMMA), and he’s got a blowout from our pickers at 9-2.

And to open the main card, our second unanimous pick is recent middleweight title challenger [autotag]Austin Vanderford[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 5-1 BMMA), who is a -200 favorite against late replacement opponent [autotag]Aaron Jeffery[/autotag] (12-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA). Vanderford has an 11-0 shutout from our staff members.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Yamauchi (58 percent), Mowry (61 percent), Macfarlane (79 percent), Saricam (62 percent) and Vanderford (68 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Matchup Roundup: New UFC and Bellator fights announced in the past week (June 13-19)

All the UFC and Bellator fight announcements that were first reported or confirmed by MMA Junkie in the past week.

MMA fight announcements are hard to follow. With so many outlets and channels available, it’s nearly impossible to organize.

But here at MMA Junkie, we’ve got your back.

Each week, we’ll compile all the newly surfaced fights in one spot. Every Monday, expect a feature listing everything you might have missed from the UFC or Bellator.

Here are the fight announcements that were broken or confirmed by MMA Junkie from June 13-19.

Bellator 284 lineup announced, including Neiman Gracie vs. Goiti Yamauchi headliner, Ilima-Lei Macfarlane, more

The Bellator 284 lineup also includes a heavyweight contender bout in the co-main event.

Major promotional MMA heads back to South Dakota this summer.

Bellator 284 is set to take place Aug. 12 at Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, the promotion officially announced Wednesday. Atop the card is a five-round welterweight matchup between [autotag]Neiman Gracie[/autotag] (11-3 MMA, 9-3 BMMA) and [autotag]Goiti Yamauchi[/autotag] (27-5 MMA, 13-4 BMMA).

Gracie, 33, most recently competed in a five-round war against Logan Storely in February. The battle was back-and-forth until the final horn, shortly after which Storley was named winner by split decision. The loss moved Gracie to 2-3 in his past five appearances.

Yamauchi, 29, has won back-to-back fights entering Bellator 284. His most recent performance, a quick submission win against Levan Chokheli, marked his divisional debut at welterweight.

In the co-main event, top heavyweight contenders collide as [autotag]Valentin Moldavksy[/autotag] (11-2 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) looks to rebound from a title shot loss when he battles undefeated rising star [autotag]Steve Mowry[/autotag] (10-0 MMA, 6-0 BMMA).

Also on the card, former Bellator women’s flyweight champion [autotag]Ilima-Lei Macfarlane[/autotag] (11-2 MMA, 10-2 BMMA) will take on [autotag]Bruna Ellen[/autotag] (6-3 MMA, 4-3 BMMA). Macfarlane will look to snap a two-fight losing skid, including a title defeat to Juliana Velasquez and a unanimous decision to Justine Kish.

Meanwhile, Ellen has won two of her most recent three bouts.

The current Bellator 284 lineup includes:

  • Neiman Gracie vs. Goiti Yamauchi
  • Valentin Moldavksy vs. Steve Mowry
  • Bruna Ellen vs. Ilima-Lei Macfarlane
  • Weber Almeida vs. Ilias Bulaid

Bellator shuffles things up, splits Tyrell Fortune vs. Tim Johnson rematch into two contender fights

A tweak to the Bellator 277 lineup sees a heavyweight rematch split and the two fighters booked against different opponents.

Originally scheduled for a rematch at Bellator 277 on April 15 in San Jose, Calif., [autotag]Tyrell Fortune[/autotag] and [autotag]Tim Johnson[/autotag] have been split by the promotion and will face different opponents.

On Monday, a Bellator official informed MMA Junkie that Fortune (11-2 MMA, 11-2 BMMA) will face undefeated rising heavyweight [autotag]Steve Mowry[/autotag] (10-0 MMA, 6-0 BMMA), and Johnson (15-4 MMA, 3-4 BMMA) will take on surging contender [autotag]Linton Vassell[/autotag] (21-8 MMA, 10-5 BMMA).

Fortune, 31, will look to bounce back from a split decision loss to Vassell in November. The defeat snapped a three-fight winning streak.

Mowry, 29, finally gets a booking against a top-ranked contender. With an unblemished record to date, Mowry has racked up 10 finishes with six submissions and four finishes due to strikes as a professional.

Johnson, 36, seeks his first win in three attempts, on the heels of back-to-back defeats against Fedor Emelianenko and Valentin Moldavsky.

Vassell, 38, has gained momentum in recent fights. Since his move to heavyweight in 2019, Vassell has gone 3-1 and rides three consecutive wins over Sergei Kharitonov, Ronny Markes, and Tyrell Fortune into Bellator 277.

With the additions, the Bellator 277 lineup includes:

  • Champion A.J. McKee vs. Patricio Freire – for featherweight title
  • Champion Vadim Nemkov vs. Corey Anderson – for light heavyweight title, grand prix final
  • Jeremy Kennedy vs. Aaron Pico
  • Tyrell Fortune vs. Steve Mowry
  • Tim Johnson vs. Linton Vassell
  • Kyle Crutchmer vs. Michael Lombardo
  • Shane Keefe vs. Tyson Miller
  • Gaston Bolanos vs. Cass Bell
  • Alan Benson vs. Theo Haig
  • Edwin De Los Santos vs. Alberto Mendez
  • Calob Ramirez vs. Bobby Seronio III

Gilbert Burns gives ‘very deserving’ black belt to unbeaten Bellator heavyweight Steve Mowry

Gilbert Burns says of Steve Mowry, “I’ll always be there to help him out with anything he needs.”

[autotag]Steve Mowry[/autotag] has just achieved one of the highest compliments one can get in the world of grappling.

The Bellator heavyweight received his jiu-jitsu blackbelt from standout grappler and UFC welterweight contender [autotag]Gilbert Burns[/autotag] on Wednesday after 12 years of training jiu-jitsu.

The black belt came on the heels of Mowry’s first-round submission win last Friday at Bellator 271. Mowry (10-0 MMA, 6-0 BMMA) tapped Rakim Cleveland with a Kimura to remain unbeaten in his professional MMA career.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CWYow5ip1Ho/

[lawrence-related id=1698772,1694314]

“When Steve came here, we were at the Blackzillians and he said he was a blue belt coming from Pittsburgh, so I just helped him sharpen up his skills, and he said, ‘Bro, I want to train under you,'” Burns told MMA Junkie. “So after that, we always had a great relationship, and I helped him out with little things because, like I said, he already had a good level.

“After a little bit, I gave him his purple belt and through the years I gave him his brown belt. I was already thinking about giving him his black belt at the end of the year after talking to my brother, Herbert. We were about to give him his black belt and then he got another submission finish, so I wanted to give him his black belt at the fight (Bellator 271), but I didn’t have it.

“I told my wife to order a belt when we got home, and we gave him a very deserving black belt. He’s been doing a great job, evolving everywhere, and he just turned 29. He’s working very hard. I think he’s going to have a bright future – great jiu-jitsu, great standup, works super hard. I think he’s on the path to be the Bellator heavyweight champion, and I’ll do my best to help him as much as I can. I’ll always be there to help him out with anything he needs. I think he’s going to be a champion very soon.”

Mowry made his professional debut in 2016 and has since put together 10 consecutive wins. Six of the 10 victories have come by submission. Mowry is currently ranked No. 6 in Bellator’s official heavyweight rankings.

Bellator has set up shop in South Florida this week, and the women’s featherweight title is on the line at the top of the bill.

Bellator 271 takes place Friday at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, women’s featherweight champion [autotag]Cris Cyborg[/autotag] (24-2 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) puts her title up against challenger [autotag]Sinead Kavanagh[/autotag] (7-4 MMA, 4-4 BMMA). Cyborg is a massive -5000 favorite at Tipico; the comeback on Kavanagh is +1200. Given those odds, it’s not surprising that not a single one of our 13 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers is picking against Cyborg.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Tyrell Fortune[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 11-1 BMMA) is a -205 favorite in his heavyweight bout against former title challenger [autotag]Linton Vassell[/autotag] (21-8 MMA, 9-5 BMMA). Fortune is our other unanimous pick on the main card at 13-0.

Also on the main card, the undefeated [autotag]Justin Gonzales[/autotag] (12-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) takes on [autotag]Aaron Pico[/autotag] (8-3, 8-3 BMMA) at featherweight. Pico is a big favorite at -370, but he has just a small lead in our staff picks at 8-5.

Former women’s featherweight title challenger [autotag]Arlene Blencowe[/autotag] (14-8 MMA, 7-4 BMMA) is a big -370 favorite against [autotag]Pam Sorenson[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA). Blencowe has a big 9-4 lead in our picks.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Steve Mowry[/autotag] (9-0 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) puts his unbeaten record up against [autotag]Rakim Cleveland[/autotag] (22-13-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA). Mowry is a huge 8-1 favorite, and he’s a near unanimous pick from our staff members at 12-1.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Cyborg (76 percent), Fortune (73 percent), Pico (76 percent), Blencowe (58 percent) and Mowry (83 percent) are the choices.
