Kliff Kingsbury, Steve Keim leave Senior Bowl early

They left after only one day of practice in Mobile.

The Senior Bowl is a weeklong event between practices, interviews, and then the game on Saturday in Mobile, Alabama. It is an important week for draft evaluation, so it is common practice for NFL decision-makers to be present.

Arizona Cardinals general manager Steve Keim and head coach Kliff Kingsbury were there in Mobile but left early.

According to ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss, they left on Wednesday morning, which was after only one day of practice.

Weinfuss noted that they were one of only a few GM/coach pairs in attendance.

Weinfuss also explained that their early departure shouldn’t be seen as a negative.

Teams get video of practices, so evaluators don’t have to be at practice to be able to evaluate for the prospects do in practice.

The Cardinals likely already interviewed the players they wanted to speak with and can break down practice film and game film back in Tempe.

So while they left early, they aren’t missing anything else now.

Cardinals GM Steve Keim ‘would love to have Kenyan Drake back’

“We truly thought this was the type of player Kenyan Drake was and that’s why we made the trade for him,” he said.

The Arizona Cardinals acquired running back Kenyan Drake in a trade with the Miami Dolphins just before the trade deadline. He made an impact immediately with 110 yards in his first game. He has been the team’s No. 1 running back since then and had his best game last week, rushing for 137 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-24 win over the Cleveland Browns.

That makes two big games in the six he has played in Arizona. At the time, the Cardinals had both David Johnson and Chase Edmonds injured. But Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said the trade wasn’t made because of that situation. He said on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM that he would have signed a player off the street to fill in at the position if it were just to fill an injury need.

“We truly thought this was the type of player Kenyan Drake was and that’s why we made the trade for him,” he said.

His contract expires after the season so he will be a free agent.

What does the future hold for Drake? Is there a place on the roster for him with the Cardinals?

“I would certainly love to have Kenyan Drake back,” Keim said. “I think he fits in this offense and really has given us a spark in many ways.”

He said that he doesn’t necessarily have to wait until the offseason to get that taken care of.

It would appear that he has already had some initial contract talks with Drake’s people. Otherwise, he would not be so open about his desire to bring him back.

The question will remain as to how long and for how much money. After all, the Cardinals already have David Johnson on the books next season with more than $10 million in guaranteed salary.

Both Keim and coach Kliff Kingsbury have gushed about Drake’s fit in the offense.

We will in the weeks and months to come how things will unfold for Drake and the running back position for 2020.

Cardinals vs. Browns ultimate Week 15 preview

It’s Kyler Murray vs Baker Mayfield in this week 15 matchup between the Cleveland Browns and the Arizona Cardinals.

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Sunday’s matchup against the Cleveland Browns was one of the more anticipated games of the 2019 season when the schedule released last April. While both teams haven’t had the kind of year they’d hoped, there are still storylines all over the field.

  1. Baker Mayfield faces Kyler Murray in a battle of the 2018 and 2019 No. 1 overall picks.
  2. Steve Wilks’ makes his return to State Farm Stadium as Browns defensive coordinator.
  3. LSU standouts Patrick Peterson vs. Odell Beckham Jr. will certainly be one-on-one.

Before the season started, many thought this game had primetime flex potential. With a combined eight wins between the teams, that certainly didn’t happen. Still, the connections between these two teams make this an interesting matchup to watch.

Read on for our Week 15 preview:

Cardinals GM Steve Keim excited about offseason plan

He doesn’t seem to feel the heat under his seat.

Many have been calling for the Arizona Cardinals to fire and replace general manager Steve Keim. The team has missed the playoffs four straight seasons. There have been multiple draft misses. The team won only three games last year and has only won three this year. It is safe to say that, from afar, he is on the hot seat.

He doesn’t appear to feel the heat, though.

Appearing on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM on Friday as he does every week during the season, he was asked about his job status and whether he has had conversations with team president Michael Bidwill about his future.

“Nothing’s changed since the last time you asked this question,” he said, referring to when he was asked about his job security after the team began the season with a winless September.

“It hasn’t changed,” he said. “I come to work every day and do the best job I can.”

He sounds like a man who knows he will be retained.

“I have a great plan in place for the offseason,” he said. “Very excited about fixing all the areas I think we need to fix. Very excited about the future.”

he also took it a step further, saying he knows “everyone else in the building shares my sentiments.”

He cited the salary cap situation they have and the excitement there is about Kyler Murray as a franchise quarterback. He also believes the team has some core pieces on offense moving forward.

Defensively, there are changes that need to be made “at all levels.”

“We’re excited about the plan and we’re going to have a lot of fun this offseason putting this thing together and building around the core pieces we already have in place.”

When the Cardinals fired Steve Wilks after last season, Michale Bidwill expressed supreme confidence in Keim to get things turned around. Keim speaks like a man who knows he has at least one more year to get things right or he is doing a great job of hiding any of the stress that comes when you might lose your job.

Should he be fired? That is a completely different discussion. Will he be fired? It appears he probably will not.
