Summer San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle opens up ahead of Las Vegas Summer League

“I feel good to be here,” said Castle.

“I feel good to be here,” said former University of Connecticut standout combo guard Stephon Castle as his new ball club, the San Antonio Spurs, prepares to shift gears from playing in the California Classic Summer League to the NBA’s 2024 Las Vegas Summer League.

“It was good to get a little practicing in while he’s here to break the ice, but it’s going to be cool to be on the court with Donovan (Clingan) again,” added Castle, referring to his fellow champion Husky and current Portland Trail Blazers big man that Castle is set to play against in Sin City action.

The host of the “Locked On Spurs” podcast, Jeff Garcia, put together an excellent clip of Castle’s pre-Vegas comments for all of us to enjoy at our leisure while we get up to speed on what is next for the Summer Spurs.

Best of Stephon Castle in the California Classic Summer League with the San Antonio Spurs

The New York native showed out for San Antonio on both ends of the court.

The NBA’s 2024 California Classic Summer League exhibition series is now over and done with. But that does not mean that fans of the San Antonio Spurs need to stop thinking about how the newest players for their favorite ball club played in it.

And no San Antonio rookie showed out more for the Spurs than former University of Connecticut standout combo guard Stephon Castle. He led the Summer Spurs in scoring in two of the three games San Antonio played in the annual exhibition series, and looked every bit the part of a top draft pick for the Spurs.

The New York native showed out for San Antonio on both ends of the court, disrupting opposing passing lanes, stealing the ball, and attacking the cup.

To see the best of his play for the Spurs in the California Classic for yourself, be sure to check out the clip embedded above that was put together by the team itself for their official YouTube channel.

San Antonio Spurs top plays from the California Classic Summer League

The standout play of rookies Stephon Castle and Harrison Ingram that caught our attention.

The NBA’s annual California Classic Summer League has now officially come and gone. In it, the San Antonio Spurs have played their way to a 1-2 record in the 2024 iteration of the event.

After dropping a pair of games to start to the Charlotte Hornets and Sacramento Kings, the Summer Spurs pulled out an 89-67 blowout win over the Chinese National Team at Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center this past Tuesday (July 9) night. While the overall record notched by San Antonio does not exactly scream success in most contexts, it was the standout play of rookies Stephon Castle and Harrison Ingram that caught our attention.

The Spurs organization took in all of the video generated from the Cali Classic, and spliced together a highlight reel of the best of San Antonio’s play in it. You can see it for yourself in the clip embedded below, courtesy of the Spurs’ official YouTube channel.

Stephon Castle speaks to the media after San Antonio win over China in summer league

Castle put up a game-high 18 points on some especially inefficient shooting, but found other ways to impact the Spurs

Former University of Connecticut standout combo guard and current San Antonio Spurs rookie Stephon Castle showed fans of the team that took him No. 4 overall in the 2024 draft why he was a steal even at that early slot in the lottery with another big game in California Classic Summer League play.

Castle put up a game-high 18 points on some especially inefficient shooting (he went just 8-of-21 overall and an ice-cold 0-of-6 from beyond the arc), but found other ways to impact the Spurs on their way to an 89-67 blowout of the Chinese National Team in Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center this past Tuesday (July 9) night.

The New York native also logged 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals for a solid outing even considering his case of the yips against China. Castle sat down to speak to the media after the win. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what he had to say, courtesy of the Spurs’ YouTube channel.

Stephon Castle shows out for the San Antonio Spurs vs. China

Even on a night he couldn’t seem to hit the sea with a pebble, the Spurs combo guard still found ways to contribute to the win on both ends.

Stephon Castle showed out for the San Antonio Spurs vs. the Chinese National Team in the Spurs’ final exhibition contest in the California Classic Summer League this past Tuesday (July 9) evening at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California.

The University of Connecticut alum put up a game-high 18 points to lead all scorers, as well as 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in 26 minutes of floor time for San Antonio. Castle shot a less-than-optimal 8-of-21 from the floor overall after going 0-of-6 from beyond the arc, and got to the line to shoot a concerning 2-of-4 from the free throw line.

But even on a night he couldn’t seem to hit the sea with a pebble, the Spurs combo guard still found ways to contribute to the win on both ends.

San Antonio Spurs rookie Stephon Castle is the real deal

The former Husky was among the best players on the court in any games played at the California Classic.

The San Antonio Spurs put a lot of their proverbial eggs in a single basket by taking unfinished point guard (or maybe he is a wing?) prospect Stephon Castle out of the University of Connecticut at No. 4 overall in the 2024 NBA draft. But in the smallest of sample sizes in which we saw the New York native show out with the Summer Spurs vs. the Charlotte Hornets in Game 1 of the California Classic Summer League slate of games, it is looking like that move was the right call.

The former Husky was among the best players on the court in any games played at the California Classic, putting up good scoring, rebounding, and passing numbers in limited minutes while nailing half of his 4 attempts from beyond the arc.

If Castle can hit that jump shot from deep with any sort of regularity close to league average, he will be a plus player all around for the Spurs — and if he gets good at it, they hit a home run in the draft.

The folks behind the “TSR Sports” YouTube channel took a closer look at his first exhibition game with San Antonio in the clip embedded above. Be sure to check it out!

San Antonio Spurs fall to Summer Sacramento Kings 85-59 in California Classic play

A trio of prospects stood out while star rookie Stephon Castle sat out.

Thankfully for the San Antonio Spurs squad playing at the California Classic Summer League series, winning is incidental to what happens with the players on a more granular level. Because the Summer Spurs did not fare much better than they did in their first tilt of the California Classic, falling 85-59 to the Sacramento Kings’ summer league squad.

But with Stephon Castle sitting this tilt out, the Spurs got a closer look at several players for longer stints as the UConn alum’s minutes were soaked up by a trio of standout players. Guard Tyson Ward (11 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 assists) and forward Harrison Ingram (11 points, 4 boards, and 2 dimes) led an anemic San Antonio offense.

Reserve guard DJ Horne (6 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assists, and as many steals) and backup forward Yauhen Massalski (6 points, 5 boards) also contributed off the bench in the Spurs’ second loss of summer league play.

San Antonio drops to 0-2 in California Classic play with the loss, and will next face the Chinese National Team on Tuesday, July 9.

San Antonio Spurs rookie guard Stephon Castle seen as among summer league’s top stories

Castle is going to need to lean on his ability to stay calm under the pressure of the scrutiny he will face as a future co-star for Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama.

Luckily for new San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle, high-leverage basketball has been his bread and butter at the University of Connecticut before being taken by the Spurs in the 2024 NBA draft.

Because the rookie is going to need to lean on his ability to stay calm under the pressure of the scrutiny he will face as a future co-star for Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama as he plays in summer league action. And it is for this reason that Bleacher Report league analyst Zach Buckley considers Castle’s play in summer league one of the top storylines for the annual exhibition play taking place in California and Las Vegas.

“The Spurs have been careful not to push too hard too quickly, but … Castle, this year’s No. 4 pick, serves as San Antonio’s biggest investment to date in Wembanyama’s supporting cast,” writes Buckley. “Of all the players on the Spurs’ current roster, Castle’s development could loom largest when it comes to determining this team’s readiness.”

“San Antonio could opt to conservatively handle Castle’s development in the regular season … but summer league should be different,” adds the B/ER analyst. “Castle should have the freedom to run offense and hopefully flash what kind of scoring threat he might be at this level.”

“He may not be an obvious choice for appointment-viewing outside … Alamo City, but there’s a universe in which he’s eventually co-star to perhaps the best player on the planet. This could be the start of a highly productive partnership.”

Stephon Castle speaks to the media after Summer Spurs fall to Hornets

Leading the Summer Spurs in scoring with a dozen points, the University of Connecticut alum also rebounded well with half a dozen boards.

Even though the final score of the San Antonio Spurs tilt vs. the Charlotte Hornets in their first day of play in the NBA’s California Classic Summer League, San Antonio 2024 NBA draft lottery pick Stephon Castle stood out.

Leading the Summer Spurs in scoring with a dozen points, the University of Connecticut alum also rebounded well with half a dozen boards, dished out a trio of assists, and nailed half of his four 3-point attempts — an encouraging wrinkle for San Antonio. Castle sat down with the media after the game to talk to the press, and touched on not just his first game with the Spurs, but also how he meshed with his teammates and their flashes of potential.

The host of the “Locked On Spurs” podcast, Jeff Garcia, put together a clip of his remarks after the loss for us to hear in full. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what Castle had to say.
