Art Rooney II crushes hopes of Steelers fans wanting to replace Kenny Pickett

On the heels of teasing a potential QB trade, Steelers President Art Rooney II suggested fans curb their enthusiasm for any such occurrence.

On the heels of teasing a potential quarterback trade, Pittsburgh Steelers President Art Rooney II suggested fans curb their enthusiasm for any such occurrence.

As if his conversation with KDKA’s Bob Pompeani not even 24 hours earlier had created unwanted buzz, Rooney sat down with WTAE’s Andrew Stockey to clear the air.

“The question that was asked — would I consider anything like that as we sit here today,” Rooney told Stockey. “I said we don’t want to close the door on anything, but I’d still put it in the unlikely category. We like to look at any opportunity we think can make us better. That’s why I don’t close the door on anything. I don’t want to create a lot of speculation that we’re going out looking to make some big blockbuster trade at the quarterback spot. I put it in the unlikely category.”

While a blockbuster quarterback trade doesn’t appear to be in the cards for the Steelers anytime soon, moves will need to be made. If the team releases Mitch Trubisky, as is speculated, Kenny Pickett will be the only quarterback under contract.

Mike Tomlin confirms Kenny Pickett will regain QB1 role with one caveat

Mike Tomlin confirms Kenny Pickett will regain his QB1 role but that it’ll be a competition this offseason.

As in the seasons since Ben Roethlisberger retired, the Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in a quarterback quandary. But one thing is certain: Kenny Pickett will regain his role as QB1.

It comes with an asterisk, though. Mike Tomlin said in his season-wrap press conference that there will be a quarterback competition.

“He will be challenged,” he said.

We’re months away from seeing who, besides Pickett, will be in that competition. It’s also unknown how serious Tomlin is about the process. He said there was a competition during Pickett’s rookie season but there never truly was — it was Mitch Trubisky’s job to lose.

Mitch Trubisky landed the starting role, and now it’s his job to win it

It became clear as training camp and the preseason progressed that the starting quarterback position would be filled by Mitch Trubisky. Head coach Mike Tomlin trusted his leadership, his veteran status, and his ability; all Trubisky had to do in the early-goings was play well enough not to lose the job.

It became clear as training camp and the preseason progressed that the Steelers’ starting quarterback position would be filled by Mitch Trubisky. Head coach Mike Tomlin trusted his leadership, his veteran status and his ability; all Trubisky had to do in the early going was play well enough not to lose the job. And while the Pittsburgh Steelers walked (or perhaps limped) away from Cincinnati with a win, something else has become clear: It’s time for Trubisky to play well enough win the job he has.

To be clear, he didn’t do anything wrong in the season opener against the Bengals. There were no turnovers, no egregious mistakes, nothing that put the team in a position to lose the game. Playing behind that offensive line would be a tall task for any quarterback, and Trubisky was able to hold on to the football. But is that enough? The Steelers defense forced five turnovers, and the offense was only able to muster one touchdown, a 1-yard pass from Trubisky to running back Najee Harris:

With the exception of this pass to seal the game, Trubisky looked hesitant and uncertain for much of the afternoon, overthinking his decisions in the pocket:

He also overthrew targets:

It’s worth mentioning that on the pass to tight end Pat Freiermuth, the Bengals were offside. It was a free play for the Steelers no matter how it ended, so the stakes weren’t nearly as high. He knew he had options and no risk of a turnover.

I’m going to reiterate: Trubisky wasn’t bad. He did nothing to lose this game, and he didn’t play poorly enough to be pulled from action. But scoring only 23 points in a game where the defense (which accounted for one of the two touchdowns) intercepted the ball four times and forced one fumble … that just isn’t the type of play that’s going to carry them through the remaining 16 games. And Trubisky knows it. When asked about the offense in Week 1, he responded: “We’re looking to get better. … There’s a lot we can improve on, specifically third down. Just overall execution, so I like the calls. … We just gotta go out and execute more to stay on the field and keep our defense off the field.”

The offense needs to start contributing across the board — that includes touchdowns and clock management. They need to hold on to the ball, and it starts with Trubisky. Play-calling, decision making and execution — it all needs to be better.

If there is another level for Trubisky to hit, he needs to tap into it. It isn’t going to be enough for him to simply play at an average level, because in this cutthroat division, playing not to lose isn’t going to get the Steelers or him anywhere, not with Kenny Pickett in the wings. Trubisky knows he’s going to have to start producing like a starting quarterback. It’s time for him to prove he has what it takes.

Steelers QB Kenny Pickett: ‘I feel like I fit the mold that coach is looking for’

Newly-drafted quarterback Kenny Pickett is familiar with the Pittsburgh Steelers in more ways than one.

Kenny Pickett to the Pittsburgh Steelers is kismet. The connections between the quarterback and his new team are endless — including offensive coordinator Matt Canada being among the staff that recruited Pickett to Pitt in 2017.

So to say that the rookie is familiar with the Steelers is an understatement. We haven’t seen much of it yet because the personnel wasn’t right to pull it off, but the offense that Canada is slowly installing has tones of his college schemes.

“I feel like I fit the mold that coach [Canada] is looking for,” Pickett said in his introductory press conference. “I’m excited to get in that playbook and see what else he’s added because I know every year it’s changing.”

Canada’s offense in 2022 should be night and day different from his first pro season as offensive coordinator, as it requires a mobile quarterback to be run successfully.

Pickett is just that guy. Though he’s a pocket passer, he’s skilled at using his legs to evade defenders, extend plays and pick up critical first downs. In 52 games with the Panthers, Pickett rushed for 809 yards, 20 touchdowns and 106 first downs.

Mike Tomlin tips hand on position of interest for the Steelers in the 2022 draft

Did Mike Tomlin hint at the direction the Steelers might take at No. 20?

Did Mike Tomlin hint at the direction the Pittsburgh Steelers might take in the first round of the NFL draft?

Maybe.

Not surprisingly, the quarterback position was the most discussed topic in today’s pre-draft press conference with Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert.

Tomlin noted that the Steelers’ due diligence with the combine, Pro Days and pre-draft visits pertaining to quarterbacks is similar to what they did with running backs last year.

And we all know that resulted in Pittsburgh taking running back Najee Harris at No. 24 in the 2021 NFL draft.

[lawrence-related id=517371]

“I enjoy the process of having a heightened urgency per a position,” Tomlin shared. “It seems like a year ago we really chopped up the running backs in a similar way.”

Could that indicate the Steelers selecting Kenny Pickett, Malik Willis or one of the other top quarterbacks at No. 20?

Tomlin was quick to quash that thought with a Tomlin-esque disclaimer that their deep, intense dive into the quarterback position this offseason shouldn’t imply anything.

“The process that we’ve gone through in terms of getting to know the quarterback pool has gained some attention, but it’s not an irregular process for us in terms of locking in and getting a feel for a certain pool within the pool if you will.”

REPORT: Jacoby Brissett ‘among the considerations’ for Steelers at QB

Brissett has ties to several on the Steelers coaching staff.

Of all the quarterback banter this offseason, here’s one that actually makes sense.

“The Steelers are discussing the possibility of adding a quarterback when free agency begins next week, and among the considerations is a player who has not been mentioned among the myriad of names being tossed around, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac wrote.

According to Dulac’s sources, Jacoby Brissett is that quarterback.

Dulac points to ties with Brissett and several on the Steelers coaching staff — Matt Canada (offensive coordinator), Eddie Faulkner (running backs), Frisman Jackson (wide receivers) and Brian Flores (senior defensive assistant).

Brissett was at North Carolina State with the offensive coaches and with Flores on two separate occasions — New England in 2016 and the Miami Dolphins last season.

Brissett, 29, fits the bill of the kind of quarterback Mike Tomlin is seeking: Long, stout and mobile.

Though the veteran could be brought to Pittsburgh on the cheap (he played with the Dolphins for $5 million last season), he’s not head and shoulders above presumed incumbent Mason Rudolph.

In six seasons and with three teams, Brissett has put up 7,742 yards, 36 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. On the ground, Brissett’s produced 653 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Steelers president Art Rooney II hints at Pittsburgh signing free-agent QB

Steelers president Art Rooney II says Pittsburgh will be looking for a free-agent quarterback this offseason.

Among the many noteworthy statements Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a season-end call with beat reporters is Pittsburgh will be looking for a free-agent quarterback this offseason.

“I think when you look at our room, we’ll have to add somebody to the room this offseason,” said Rooney II. “We’ll look at all the opportunities we have to do that.”

Although the question posed by ESPN’s Brooke Pryor was specific to the plan when Roethlisberger retires, Rooney said the team will have to add a quarterback this offseason.

32 quarterbacks are currently set to hit free agency in March, including Cam Newton and Jameis Winston.

Rooney II also said, per Bob Labriola of Steelers.com, “I feel confident [Mason] can be a quarterback in this league and a starter in this league.”

This comment is more about what he didn’t say — that he could be a starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Perhaps it’ll be with another team? The QB room would be plenty full with Ben Roethlisberger, Mason Rudolph, Dwayne Haskins and a free agent. Unless, of course, the Steelers simply re-sign Josh Dobbs, who will be a free agent in March — which I don’t see them doing.

In 15 games (nine starts), Rudolph’s record is 5-4. He’s passed for 2,089 yards, 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
