NBA targeting no later than May 8 to open facilities with restrictions

The NBA is waiting until at least May 8 before allowing teams to re-open their practice facilities in places where it’s legal.

As the NBA attempts to chart a path to a potential finish to the season in some form or fashion, they are still going to take more time before they choose to let teams use their practice facilities again. The league announced on Monday afternoon that the league is targeting a date no later than May 8 to reopen their practice facilities for players to stay in shape, however, they will have several restrictions about how to use them and how many people can use them.

The potential rules changes would allow teams to make their practice facilities available for use by the team’s players for workouts or treatment on a voluntary, individual basis if the team’s facility is in a city that is no longer subject to a government restriction.  For any team that, due to a government restriction, is prohibited from making its facility available for use by the team’s players, the league will work with the team to identify alternatives.

The following restrictions would apply:

  • No more than four players would be permitted at a facility at any one time.

  • No head or assistant coaches could participate.

  • Group activity remains prohibited, including practices or scrimmages.

  • Players remain prohibited from using non-team facilities such as public health clubs, fitness centers, or gyms.

Obviously, the goal is so that whenever certain states lift stay-at-home orders, players have safe and sanitary places to workout rather than going to health clubs.

However, it remains to be seen which teams will do this. Cities such as San Francisco aren’t projected to lift their stay-at-home order and the City of Los Angeles currently has a restriction on people exercising indoors. States like Georgia and Florida have relaxed stay-at-home restrictions, but in a statement to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, not even the Atlanta Hawks are opening their facilities yet.

The league is also mandating that any team staff around the players wear masks and stand at least 12 feet away from players, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Shams also reported that the league is asking each franchise to assign a senior executive as its Facility Hygiene Officer.

LeBron James echoes Nike’s message to ‘play inside’ during coronavirus

The Los Angeles Lakers star shared his own footage along with a message from the brand he’s been with his entire career to stay inside.

Although LeBron James like many of us is missing sports, both being able to play it and watch it, he is very clear that he agrees with the recommendations from experts that most people should stay at home and practice social distancing. He applauded the City of Los Angeles’s decision to enforce a shelter-in-place order earlier this week and on Saturday, he echoed the message from the team he’s been with his entire professional career: Nike.

Nike shared a message to their followers, which was boosted by LeBron and several other Nike athletes, encouraging their fans to acknowledge that this is a public health crisis that must be taken seriously together, even as athletes look to stay in shame.

LeBron then shared an image from his home gym, which is obviously a lot more robust than what most of us have at our disposal. However, LeBron and other elite athletes sharing the message to their fans that this is a crucial time to stay inside and flatten the curve of the virus is important to inform more people about the virus who haven’t yet taken it seriously.
