Stanford vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

Which Stanford team shows up?

Is it the one that balled out late to get by Oregon, or is it the one that couldn’t run the ball a lick against Arizona State?

Is it the one that confidently ripped through USC, or is it the one that sputtered too much against UCLA?

While QB Tanner McKee is the new star of the show, the key is the Cardinal’s ability to run. They’re 3-0 when they’re at least okay, running for 124 yards or more, and they’re 0-3 when running for under 70 yards.

Washington State has allowed over 200 yards in half of its games, but …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars got blasted by Oregon State for 309 rushing yards last week and still run. Why?

The passing game has kicked in over the last few weeks with Jayden de Laura getting comfortable in the gig. He didn’t bomb away against Cal, and he gave up two picks, but he also threw three touchdown passes. Against the Beavers he was fantastic with close to 400 yards with three scores.

Stanford has the biggest issue against the good running teams, and that’s not what Wazzu does. However, as long as the defense keeps taking the ball away – it has a Pac-12 high 13 takeaways – then the team can overcome a few de Laura mistakes and he can still keep bombing away.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State is quickly trending up – it’s like the team needed September to get up to speed – and Stanford is quickly trending weird.

A win is a win is a win, but the Cardinal are a miraculous comeback against Oregon away from losing three straight and losing all the momentum from the USC and Vanderbilt wins.

It might be this simple – can Stanford avoid the turnovers?

Washington State will turn it over, and it’ll take it away. Stanford turned it over twice in the win loss to Kansas State and three times in the loss to Arizona State. That’s it.

The Cardinal offense will be careful with the ball, the running game will work, and the team will bounce back from the ASU debacle to pull off a suddenly nice-looking road win.

Why Washington State Will Win

Stanford is struggling way too much on third downs on both sides of the ball.

The Cardinal offense has only converted nine of 29 chances, and the defense has been a disaster at getting off the field, allowing Oregon and Colorado to convert 17 of 25 third down opportunities.

The Washington State offense hasn’t been the high-octane thrill ride it normally is or likely will be … yet. It seems like it’s coming, though.

Freshman QB Jayden de Laura wasn’t bad against Oregon State, and he hit Oregon for more downfield plays and 321 yards with two scores. This has looked like an offense under.a new coaching staff that just needs a little time, but it has the upside to be explosive, and Stanford’s O hasn’t been consistent enough. However …

CFN Experts Picks, Predictions: Week 12

Why Stanford Will Win

New Wazzu head coach Nick Rolovich has had to do a few tweaks, and there’s been a personnel overhaul in some spots, and it shows defensively – especially on third downs – and the passing game hasn’t started to click yet.

Stanford might not be playing all that well, but the passing game hasn’t been bad, the offensive line is great in pass protection, and there hasn’t been any problems controlling the clock. The Cardinal should have the ball for at least five minutes more.

Can the Stanford running game finally start to work? It was okay against Oregon, but it wasn’t anywhere to be found against Colorado in last week’s loss. Pounding away on the Washington State defensive front shouldn’t be a problem, QB Davis Mills has a game under his belt after throwing for 327 yards against the Buffs, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Stanford needs its lines to be better.

The pass rush and the normal Cardinal playmaking behind the line haven’t been there, and the O line – while talented and not that bad – needs to be able to own the ground game.

Washington State has the ability push with the passing attack, but Stanford will be on the right side of a close win helped by just having the ball longer.

Why Stanford Will Win

The Cardinal pass defense has been able to hold up just fine despite all the problems in a slew of other spots.

Arizona was able to move the ball through the air – and Stanford won.

Oregon State and Jake Luton were able to throw for 337 yards – and Stanford won.

The problem for the Cardinal is when passing games roll for big plays, not necessarily bulk yards. They’re 0-3 when allowing ten yards or more per pass, and Washington State is averaging 8.2 yards per throw and hasn’t thrown for more than ten yards per pop since the first two games and hasn’t been over eight yards per throw in the last five.

Stanford will let Anthony Gordon dink and dunk as long as it limits the yards after catch.

Washington State’s pass defense isn’t doing a whole lot, but the run defense has been worse. Stanford’s offense has been ultra-flaky, but the return of QB KJ Costello has cranked up the inconsistent passing game over the last two weeks. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Washington State Will Win

Stanford has way too hard a time scoring.

It was able to light up Arizona, and the running game has been able to averaged five-plus yards per carry over the last two games, but the team isn’t turning yards into points.

The Cardinal have only scored more than 20 points four times, and it’s been a battle just to get there a few touchdowns.

Wazzu might have a whole lot of problems defensively, and the run defense is about to get tested, but Gordon and the offense should be able to move the chains and put up the yards to make Stanford press.

Utah was able to stuff the Washington State offense, but that’s a potential Pac-12 champion that pulled it off. Cal was able to hold the Cougars to 20 points, but that’s an elite defense getting it done on the road.

At home, Wazzu’s offense is averaging was over 50 points per game. Stanford can’t keep up any sort of a pace. However …

What’s Going To Happen

This has to be Cameron Scarlett’s game. The Stanford running back has quietly have a strong year with five games with 90+ yards and with two games of 100+ yards in the last four.

The Cardinal will run well enough to control the clock and the game, KJ Costello will have another strong performance, and it’ll be a huge road win for a team that needs it to stay alive in the hunt for a bowl game.
