WATCH! Battlehawks’ Pierson-El dedicates TD to late grandmother

De’Mornay Pierson-El scored a TD for St. Louis and dedicated it to his late grandmother.

De’Mornay Pierson-El of the St. Louis Battlehawks scored a touchdown in the third quarter Sunday at Houston against the Roughnecks.

The wideout from Nebraska said after the TD it had special meaning. His grandmother passed away recently and his grandfather had asked Pierson-El to score a touchdown in St. Louis’ opener. That didn’t happen, but he did find the end zone in Houston.

After the TD, Pierson-El took the ball and gave it to his sister in the stands. He said they would give it to their grandfather when they traveled to Virginia this week.

An emotional weekend for XFL wideouts as Eli Rogers of the DC Defenders played Saturday while his family was at his grandmother’s funeral service.

St. Louis was one of three teams in the XFL East division to come away with a victory in the league’s opener. The Battlehawks edged the Renegades 15-9 in Dallas. Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu completed 20 of 27 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown. Ta’Amu, who played collegiately at Ole Miss, also rushed for 77 yards on nine carries. Former Florida running back Matt Jones led the team with 21 carries and 85 yards, while Keith Ford scored the lone rushing touchdown. The Battlehawks defense was also stout, holding the Renegades to just 58 yards rushing. Linebacker Terence Garvin was all over the field with eight total tackles (two of those for a loss) and one sack.

In the XFL West division, Houston sits in first place after a 37-17 trouncing of the visiting Los Angeles Wildcats.  After being down 17-12 late in the third quarter, the Roughnecks took the lead on a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback P.J. Walker to wide receiver Sam Mobley. That series was part of a 25-0 run for head coach June Jones. It’s no secret that Jones’ offenses like to air the ball out. Walker finished the day 23 of 38 for 272 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. If St. Louis wants to stay in the game, it starts with limiting Walker and the passing game.

  • St. Louis was the only road team to win in Week 1. The Battlehawks beat the Dallas Renegades 15-9 to cover a +9.5-point spread as underdogs.
  • Roughnecks QB P.J. Walker completed 23 of his 38 pass attempts for 272 yards and four touchdowns against one interception. Two of his touchdown passes were at least 39 yards.

Prediction

Roughnecks 28, Battlehawks 18

Moneyline (?)

The Battlehawks (+240) are the biggest underdogs of Week 2 in the XFL as they stay on the road for a second straight game to open the season. There is no value in backing the Roughnecks (-304), even though they showed last week they’re now a team to beat en route to the April 26 championship game.

PASS and look to the spread for better odds on either side.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the favored Roughnecks to win the Week 2 game returns a profit of just $3.29.

Against the Spread (?)

Back the ROUGHNECKS (-8.5, +110) to win by at least nine points at home for the second week in a row. Walker looked like the much better quarterback in Week 1 and the Battlehawks’ top two running backs are both battling injuries. Don’t expect this to be another 20-point blowout, but Houston will win by double digits.

Over/Under (?)

UNDER 50.5 (-128) is the play. The Roughnecks put up more points than any other team in Week 1 (37) while the Battlehawks’ 15 points were the fewest of any winning team in the season-opener. This will fall well short of the projection.

The odds for the 2020 XFL Championship have been shaken up rather significantly following a successful opening weekend for the new league. Now that fans and bettors have a stronger understanding of the rules and game style – and of which teams have the best understanding of those rules – we reassess the 2020 XFL Championship odds, with futures picks and our best bets.

2020 XFL Championship Odds

Odds via BetMGM, last updated February 11, at 2 p.m. ET.

TEAM PRESEASON ODDS UPDATED ODDS
New York Guardians +350 +350
DC Defenders +750 +350
Houston Roughnecks +750 +500
Dallas Renegades +250 +600
Tampa Bay Vipers +550 +600
St. Louis Battlehawks +1000 +700
Los Angeles Wildcats +450 +1000
Seattle Dragons +1200 +1600

The Guardians stay at +350 as the Renegades plummet down the board. New York pummeled Tampa Bay 23-3 at home in Week 1, as ex-NFL QB Matt McGloin completed 15 of 29 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown. The defense recorded two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

DC Defenders

The Defenders soared into a share of top spot with their 31-19 win over the lowly Dragons in Saturday afternoon’s league-opening game in DC. QB Cardale Jones was the difference with 235 passing yards and two touchdowns, while adding another 28 yards on the ground.

Houston Roughnecks

The Roughnecks climbed into the third on the odds board with their 37-17 victory over the Wildcats Saturday. Little-known QB P.J. Walker racked up four touchdowns against just one interception while completing 23 of 39 pass attempts for 272 yards.

St. Louis Battlehawks

The Battlehawks opened the year with the second-worst odds in the XFL, but they were the only road team to win as they toppled the heavily-favored Renegades. Matt Jones led the backfield with 85 yards on 21 attempts, while Christine Michael managed to gain zero yards on seven carries.

2020 XFL Championship Odds: Fallers

Dallas Renegades

The Renegades should get somewhat of a pass for their season-opening loss, as starting QB Landry Jones was ruled out for Week 1. Backup Philip Nelson was efficient (33-for-42) in his place, but he finished with 209 yards and no touchdowns against one INT.

Los Angeles Wildcats

The Wildcats took the biggest fall down the board following their 20-point loss to the Roughnecks. They opened the season with the third-best odds, but are now considered longshots to climb out of a 0-1 hole. WR Nelson Spruce was a bright spot, as he caught 11 of 15 targets for 103 yards.

Why St. Louis’ Kenny Robinson is the most intriguing player in the XFL

Kenny Robinson of the St. Louis Battlehawks is taking a unique route to the NFL Draft

One of the big questions about the new XFL was whether it would go after players who had yet to pass through the NFL Draft. One such player, the St. Louis Battlehawks’ Kenny Robinson, fits the criteria and he has an interesting back story.

Robinson, who just turned 21, attended college at West Virginia. The DB played two seasons for the Mountaineers.

Robinson was dismissed from West Virginia due to a code of conduct violation involving academic fraud and was not in school long enough to gain eligibility for the NFL’s Supplemental Draft. Most players in that position find themselves looking for a place to transfer to another college. Not Robinson.

He was picked by the Battlehawks, 39th overall, in the XFL Draft and decided to follow that route while waiting for the NFL Draft. A key factor in the decision was his mother being diagnosed with cancer.

“It was either go to school or help take care of my family and do what I love,” he told XFL.com. “The XFL is also paying for me to take classes still, so I can take classes and get my degree and take care of my family at the same time.”

Battlehawks coach Jonathan Hayes believes in his young safety.

“He’s athletic. He’s got great range. He’s got great ball skills. He’s a smart kid, understands the game, very instinctive. Those are the things that you dream for with a safety. He’ll come up and put you on the ground.”

BattleHawks coach Jonathan Hayes on S Kenny Robinson

“If we want to put it in perspective, tennis players can turn pro when they’re 15, when they’re ready to do it, and I understand the difference between sports,” Hayes told the website. “In basketball, you can do it at 19.

“If a guy is mature enough and, it’s a case-by-case basis, but if he can do it, he can do it. I would promote staying in school. It’s important and I’ve talked to my son about it, I want him to finish school, but you have a great opportunity so why not take it? The same with Kenny. He has a great opportunity.”

The scouting report on the  6-foot-2, 198-pound Robinson from Hayes is nothing less than stellar.

“I think he’s going to be fabulous,” Hayes said. “I really do. He’s athletic. He’s got great range. He’s got great ball skills. He’s a smart kid, understands the game, very instinctive. Those are the things that you dream for with a safety. He’ll come up and put you on the ground. He’s a very sure tackler.”

Robinson is eligible for the 2020 NFL Draft.

St. Louis Battlehawks at Dallas Renegades XFL odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s St. Louis Battlehawks at Dallas Renegades XFL betting odds and lines, with Week 1 picks, tips and best bets.

The St. Louis Battlehawks visit the Dallas Renegades in the final game of Week 1 of the XFL’s first season Sunday. Kickoff at Globe Life Park in Arlington is set for 5 p.m. ET. Below, we breakdown the Battlehawks-Renegades Week 1 matchup, with XFL betting picks and tips.

Battlehawks at Renegades: XFL Week 1 preview, betting trends and notes

  • Renegades head coach/general manager Bob Stoops will lead his team out against Battlehawks boss Jonathan Hayes. Stoops makes his debut in professional football after a long career in the college ranks. Hayes previously was the Cincinnati Bengals tight ends coach.
  • Fantasy football fans will be excited for the return of RB Christine Michael, who tops the Battlehawks’ backfield depth chart. P Marquette King and WR/KR Keith Mumphrey are among the other recognizable names on the roster.
  • The Renegades also have some notable ex-NFL talent in RB Cameron Artis-Payne and QB Landry Jones (knee). Jones’ status for the season opener is in question due to injury.
  • Both home teams won on the first day of XFL action, Saturday. The DC Defenders beat the Seattle Dragons 31-19 and the Houston Roughnecks took down the LA Wildcats 37-17.
  • The Renegades are the favorites to win the inaugural XFL Championship Game April 26, at +300 odds. The Battlehawks are the second-biggest longshots at +1000.

Battlehawks at Renegades: Odds, betting lines and prediction

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:15 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Renegades 35, Battlehawks 30

Moneyline (?)

Both home favorites won with relative ease on the opening day of the 2020 XFL season. As such, the play would be to back the Renegades (-455), especially with the two teams on near-opposite ends of the futures odds. These odds are just too chalky with so much still unknown about these teams and this league. With a $10 bet on the Renegades to win returning a profit of $2.20, we’ll PASS on the moneyline in favor of the spread.

The Battlehawks (+333) could be worth a small investment with better than a 3-1 return on your investment, but we’re following the trends from Saturday and sticking with the favorite.

Against the Spread (?)

Saturday’s two games were decided by 12 and 20 points. Despite those results, we’re backing the BATTLEHAWKS (+9.5, -115) to stay within 9 points in a loss or win outright. The heavy number on the Renegades seems to be reflective of the assumed quarterback advantage with Jones under center. If he’s unable to go, he’s likely to be at less than full health and could be replaced by Philip Nelson or Eric Dungey.

Over/Under (?)

Take the OVER 51.5 (-110) after Saturday’s two games played to either side of this number with totals of 50 and 54 points. The final game of the week has allowed extra preparation time for both sides and the two head coaches have now had two games of real football to get a better understanding of the XFL’s new rules and game strategy.

Tanner McEvoy, Darius Hillary selected in XFL Supplemental Draft

Two former Wisconsin Badgers, Tanner McEvoy and Darius Hillary, were selected in the XFL supplemental draft on Friday.

Two former Wisconsin Badgers have been added to XFL rosters after safety Darius Hillary and wide receiver Tanner McEvoy were selected in the league’s supplemental draft on Friday.

McEvoy was selected by the Tampa Bay Vipers and Hillary went to the St. Louis Battlehawks.

McEvoy and Hillary join two other Badgers – Olive Sagapolu and Garret Dooley – on XFL rosters as the league looks to reboot in 2020, just after the conclusion of the NFL season.

McEvoy was perhaps the most interesting recent player in Badgers history, having played quarterback and safety while at Wisconsin. He completed 65 passes for 709 yards and five touchdowns in 2014, while also racking up 45 career tackles and seven interceptions as a defensive back.

He entered the NFL as a receiver however, and spent two seasons with the Seahawks and one with the Dolphins before finding his way to the XFL.

Hillary spent four years with the Badgers from 2012-2015, racking up 138 combined tackles with 18 passes defended and one interception. He went undrafted and bounced around multiple practice squads, appearing in one NFL game with the Browns in 2017.
