Dallas has a balanced offense and defense, with its scoring average at 17 points per game and its defense allowing 16 PPG, which is currently third in the XFL. The Renegades beat the Los Angeles Wildcats 25-18 last weekend. After the offense was inefficient for three quarters, the Renegades had a 19-point fourth quarter. Quarterback Landry Jones threw for 305 yards and Cameron Artis-Payne finished with 131 yards (99 rushing) and two key second-half scores.

Seattle is averaging 18 PPG and surrendering an average of 20 PPG, meaning this should be a very evenly matched contest. If ticket sales are any indication, the Dragons are currently one of the most popular teams in the XFL. The Dragons are coming off of a 17-9 home win over the Tampa Bay Vipers. Just like Dallas, Seattle’s offense sputtered in the first half, totaling just 41 yards, but the defense kept the Dragons in striking distance. Seattle scored just one offensive touchdown in the game, but it was a moot point because the defense carried the load. The Dragons backfield topped 100 yards, with Trey Williams and Kenneth Farrow each contributing 45 yards.

St. Louis was one of three teams in the XFL East division to come away with a victory in the league’s opener. The Battlehawks edged the Renegades 15-9 in Dallas. Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu completed 20 of 27 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown. Ta’Amu, who played collegiately at Ole Miss, also rushed for 77 yards on nine carries. Former Florida running back Matt Jones led the team with 21 carries and 85 yards, while Keith Ford scored the lone rushing touchdown. The Battlehawks defense was also stout, holding the Renegades to just 58 yards rushing. Linebacker Terence Garvin was all over the field with eight total tackles (two of those for a loss) and one sack.

In the XFL West division, Houston sits in first place after a 37-17 trouncing of the visiting Los Angeles Wildcats.  After being down 17-12 late in the third quarter, the Roughnecks took the lead on a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback P.J. Walker to wide receiver Sam Mobley. That series was part of a 25-0 run for head coach June Jones. It’s no secret that Jones’ offenses like to air the ball out. Walker finished the day 23 of 38 for 272 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. If St. Louis wants to stay in the game, it starts with limiting Walker and the passing game.

The XFL is back! Or at least a reimagined version aimed at filling the football-less in the sports calendar. To kick-off, it’s brand new season in 2020, the Los Angeles Wildcats and Houston Roughnecks will do battle in one of the first showcase games on Saturday. Will this version of the league succeed where its predecessor failed or will it be another misguided attempt to cure American football withdrawals? Let’s find out.

The L.A. Wildcats are led by head coach and GM Winston Moss, who was a longtime assistant coach for the Green Bay Packers. He will entrust the starting quarterback job to the well traveled Jalan McClendon. The former NC State and Baylor dual-threat QB most recently was signed by the Washington Redskins as their fourth-string option before being released after a month. He has got the starting reps in preseason scrimmages and has reportedly controlled the offense well. McClendon’s main target will likely be former Temple wideout Adonis Jennings,  while the Wildcats also have a plethora of running backs to cycle through.

Former Hawaii and SMU head coach June Jones will be tasked with leading the Houston Roughnecks. It’s unclear who the veteran play caller will settle on to take the majority of offensive snaps under center. Both Phillip Walker and Connor Cook split time during the preseason scrimmages. No matter who gets the No. 1 job, they’ll have plenty of offensive weapons to utilize. Wide receivers Sam Mobley and Kahlil Morris showed up in the preseason, both catching touchdown passes in the final tuneup against Los Angeles.
