Badgers in contact with St. John’s transfer

The Badgers and their coaching staff have been in contact with AJ Storr, a 6-foot-6 transfer guard from St. John’s.

The Badgers and their coaching staff have been in contact with AJ Storr, a 6-foot-6 transfer guard from St. John’s. Storr has entered the portal after averaging 8.8 points and 1.9 rebounds in his freshman season with the Red Storm.

Considering the fact that St. John’s just brought in Rick Pitino, it appears as if the veteran head coach is looking for a fresh start with the roster. Storr is just one of seven players who have entered the portal so far including guards Andre Curbelo and Posh Alexander.

With the newfound understanding that Jordan Davis will be leaving Wisconsin’s program, Storr could provide Greg Gard and his Badgers with some additional size at the wing position, something they sorely needed in 2022-2023.

St. John’s steals NCAA tourney play-in win on last-second layup over Purdue

What a bucket from Jayla Everett!

St. John’s senior guard Jayla Everett stepped up to make a last-second game winner during the first four games of the 2023 NCAA women’s tournament.

With No. 11 St. John locked in a 64-64 tie with No. 11 Purdue during the Seattle Regional’s play-in game, Everett knocked down a dramatic layup with 0.3 seconds remaining in the game.

The bucket got in just in time to give the Red Storm the No. 11 seed in the NCAA women’s tournament. St. John will face off against No. 6 North Carolina on Saturday.

You could see the pride in Everett’s face as she willed her team into the tournament with such a fantastic effort to get to the basket.

Wow, if that’s not the kind of layup that makes March Madness worth it, we’re not sure what is.

Dramatic finishes like this happen throughout the basketball season, but they’re especially special when they happen in such a pivotal situation as a play-in game.

It was quite a way for St. John’s to announce itself to the tournament field.

Speculation swirls around Bobby Hurley as Arizona State fades away in 2023

Coaching carousel speculation is already in high gear. Bobby Hurley might want the St. John’s or Georgetown jobs.

Arizona State is an NIT team right now, and the Sun Devils’ path to the NCAA Tournament is narrowing. The Sun Devils will definitely need to beat either UCLA or Arizona in the coming weeks, and they will probably need to grab at least one other high-value win while avoiding bad losses. ASU doesn’t have much breathing room in the pursuit of an NCAA bid. If the Sun Devils miss out, coach Bobby Hurley might think about a change of scenery.

(h/t Kevin Sweeney of Sports Illustrated)

“Hurley is in a unique spot,” Sweeney wrote. “He could realistically be fired or extended, or leave for another job this coming offseason. Conventional wisdom was that Hurley cooled his seat with a 6–1 start in Pac-12 play, but since then Arizona State has lost five of six to fall to the wrong side of the NCAA tournament bubble. It’s an all-too-familiar script for the Sun Devils under Hurley, who’ve often gotten out to hot starts before fading late.

“ASU’s résumé is still in decent shape, so sneaking into the Big Dance is well within the realm of possibility. But should he fall short, it’d be hard to justify an extension with his contract set to expire in 2024. And regardless of whether he saves his job in Tempe this spring, don’t be surprised if Hurley tries to get involved with jobs back East.”

Those jobs: St. John’s and Georgetown. St. John’s could fire coach Mike Anderson. Georgetown and Patrick Ewing are almost certain to get a divorce at the end of the season. This will be a fascinating set of plot points to monitor.

Villanova vs St. John’s Game Preview

Why Villanova Will Win

We already did this a week ago and Villanova didn’t have too many problems handling the St. John’s high-powered offense.

The Wildcats won on the free throw line, they did a nice job from the field, and they went off from three. It also helped that the defense that’s been solid all year at guarding the three kept the Red Storm from doing anything outside.

For all of the good things the St. John’s offense does, it’s been awful at times over last few weeks from three, but …

Why St. John’s Will Win

It still manages to stay in games when it’s not hitting from the outside.

It was lousy from three against Villanova – hitting just 4-of-21 tries – and it was still sort of around in the 11-point loss. It couldn’t hit a thing a Butler a few days ago and won.

There are a whole lot of assists and a whole lot of points off of mistakes to find other ways to score when the outside shots aren’t dropping. It’s a fun team that knows hot to get up and down the floor. Even though Villanova plays a good style of D, the first time around was an aberration.

St. John’s isn’t scoring just 62 points this time around, and now it’s in Madison Square Garden. So …

What’s Going To Happen

Just how much can the St. John’s offense get going? When it scored more than 83 points it’s 9-0, and when it gets more than 75 it’s 12-2.

Villanova has only allowed more than 75 points five times, and it only gave up more than 83 once – and it took overtime for UCLA to get there.

The Red Storm will be far stronger offensively than they were the first time around against Villanova, but they’re not going to come up with enough over the finishing kick.

The Wildcats will come back roaring in the final moments when they need to.

Providence vs St. John’s Game Preview

Why Providence Will Win

Providence is playing like a team loaded with seniors who know how to keep their cool in tight games – because that’s what it is.

There might have been a rim-rocking by Marquette a few weeks ago, but the Friars made up for it a few days ago with a 65-63 win after doing just enough defensively to stop the three.

It’s not a high-powered offensive machine, but it doesn’t make a whole lot of mistakes and it has a knack for coming through in the clutch. It didn’t need to do that the first time it deals with St. John’s back in early January, winning by ten by hitting seemingly everything from inside the arc.

On the flip side of Providence, St. John’s can’t come through late – it can’t hit free throws consistently enough – and it can’t stop the three. But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why St. John’s Will Win

There’s a lot there to think something might turn soon.

It doesn’t shoot well enough and the threes aren’t falling, but few teams in the Big East can move the ball around better and no one makes more big defensive plays and takeaways.

Providence might not turn the ball over, but it doesn’t force stops like St. John’s can with its aggressive style. The Red Storm should be able to hang around as long as this doesn’t get into a three-point contest, but …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Providence will come through in the clutch.

St. John’s will make this a Tuesday night fight at home, but it won’t get the threes it needs.

It really is a simple formula. The Red Storm are 10-0 when hitting 44% from the field or better, and they’re 1-8 when they don’t.

Only four teams have hit 44% or more of their shots against Providence, and this St. John’s team is no Marquette or Virginia – the only two teams to do that and come up with wins.

St. John’s vs Villanova Game Preview

Why St. John’s Will Win

The Red Storm can’t hang with Villanova shot for shot, but they can hit from three, and they can move.

They can’t force mistakes against one of the most careful teams in college basketball, but they can hit the offensive glass hard and they’re fantastic at coming up with steals – just a few will be okay.

St. John’s can move the ball around well, too, and they come up with a lot more assists than Villanova does. To make this work, the team has to move, keep moving, and it has to make this a shootout.

It’s 11-1 when it scores more than 75 points and 0-6 when it doesn’t. Make this about volume shots, get Villanova out of its controlling pace, and …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Villanova Will Win

Villanova has allowed more than 75 points just four times.

Granted, it was 1-3 in those games, but the team has a way of making everyone bog down a bit and relying on the defense that forces teams to hit fewer than 40% of their shots.

But it’s this simple. To beat Villanova you have to be able to guard the three. St. John’s is one of the worst teams in America at three-point defense.

You have to keep the Wildcats from getting to the free throw line, because no one shoots better from the stripe. St. John’s is gets hit with a whole lot of fouls.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

St. John’s should be able to make this interesting if it can somehow generate a whole slew of points in transition, and those have to come off of rebounds.

There won’t be enough of them.

Villanova will be too good from the outside, St. John’s will lose big in the free throw battle, and an entertaining game will become a bit out of hand late.
