Spurs reportedly ‘willing’ to trade Keldon Johnson this offseason

The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly “willing” to listen to Keldon Johnson trade offers this summer.

The San Antonio Spurs have a bunch of decisions to make this summer. As they look to potentially hit the trade market, a few different players could be made available. And according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Spurs have been willing to listen to offers for Keldon Johnson. (H/t Jonah Kubicek of Inside the Spurs)

“In addition to the team being open to discussing trade ideas with both the fourth and eighth overall picks, the Spurs will be willing to hear offers involving Keldon Johnson, league sources told ClutchPoints,” Siegel wrote. “However, the Spurs still view Johnson as a key building block next to Wembanyama, and have given teams no indication that he is currently on the trade block.”

Johnson is set to make $19 million next season, making him a solid trade piece based on his salary alone.

On top of that, he could be used to lure in a star to San Antonio or, at the very least, bring in some more three-point shooting or playmaking – two of the Spurs’ biggest needs this summer.

Myles Turner floated as potential Spurs offseason trade target

Could the San Antonio Spurs consider a trade for Myles Turner?

The San Antonio Spurs have a chance to improve this summer. Victor Wembanyama is already a top-notch NBA player, so surrounding him with more talent should be a top priority. Desmond Ordonez of Air Alamo suggested Indiana Pacers big man Myles Turner as a potential trade target for this offseason.

“Turner could cost San Antonio less than he would have two years ago,” wrote Ordonez. “Therefore, bringing on Turner would still leave the team money to spend elsewhere if they wanted to. But the main reason to add a player of Turner’s caliber is what he can bring to the team defensively.

“San Antonio was one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA this season. Wembanyama, of course, nearly captured the Defensive Player of the Year award, but, overall, San Antonio collectively scared nobody. Perhaps a Wembanyama-Turner frontcourt duo would improve that.”

Bringing in Turner would see San Antonio create a massive frontcourt.

Mock trade sees Spurs land Malcolm Brogdon from Trail Blazers

In this mock trade, the San Antonio Spurs would land Malcolm Brogdon.

If the San Antonio Spurs want to improve next season, they should look into adding some solid veteran talent. Jeje Gomez of Pounding the Rock suggested a mock deal that would see them send Devonte’ Graham and the 35th pick to the Portland Trail Blazers for Malcolm Brorgdon.

“If more enticing options don’t pan out, the Spurs could call the Blazers and ask about Malcolm Brogdon,” Gomez wrote. “Portland has young guards who need minutes and a surprisingly expensive roster for a rebuilding team, so they might be amenable to part with Brogdon if it means cutting some salary, especially with Brogdon’s stock arguably at an all-time low following a season of injuries in Portland. The Spurs would be using their cap space to absorb part of his contract but Brogdon would be a tall table-setter who can play both guard spots, hit threes and offer a veteran voice in the locker room.

“At worst, he backs up Tre Jones and leaves in the offseason, when his contract expires. At best, he regains the level he showed in past stops and is either flipped at the deadline or retained next offseason for a lower price.”

Brogdon’s playmaking and ball-handling would undoubtedly make life easier for Victor Wembanyama.

Mock trade sees Spurs trade No. 8 pick in deal for Collin Sexton

In this mock trade, the San Antonio Spurs would swap top-10 picks while also adding Collin Sexton.

The San Antonio Spurs could shake things up this summer. Jeje Gomez of Pounding the Rock suggested a mock trade that would flip the eighth pick, the Charlotte Hornets’ 2025 first-round pick (lottery-protected), Malaki Branham, and Devonte’ Graham to the Utah Jazz for Collin Sexton and the 10th pick.

“The Spurs are rumored to be interested in Darius Garland, but Garland’s former backcourt partner could be the better get for a team that probably shouldn’t be committing long-term to any lead guard who might not fit alongside Victor Wembanyama,” Gomez wrote. “While Garland has four years left on a contract that pays him an average of over $39 million, Sexton is making under $19 million a year for the next two seasons. Garland is arguably the superior player, but their numbers from last season are strikingly similar, with Sexton getting an edge in most categories. Granted, the Cavaliers were a playoff team spearheaded by a high-volume scorer that replicated what Garland does best, but Sexton scored and assisted at a career-high level on a team with less talent. If what the Spurs are after is an explosive scorer and creator, the cheaper Sexton fits the bill.

“The Jazz might not be willing to part with a player who had a resurgence last season, especially for the possibility of climbing two spots, likely getting two seconds from the Hornets, and getting a crack at Branham. But it’s tough to assess what Utah is doing, and the franchise selected point guard Keyonte George with one of their first-rounders last season and might want to re-sign veteran Kris Dunn after his impressive year, making Sexton redundant.”

Bringing in Sexton while also keeping two top-10 picks would be an intriguing move for San Antonio.

Mock trade sees Spurs land Harrison Barnes in deal with Kings

In this mock trade, the San Antonio Spurs would land Harrison Barnes in a deal with the Sacramento Kings.

The San Antonio Spurs probably shouldn’t push all of their chips in this summer, but they could trade in some of them. Jeje Gomez of Pounding the Rock suggests a deal that would send Julian Champagnie and Devonte’ Graham to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Harrison Barnes.

“In this scenario, the Spurs would be focusing on the short term by bringing more consistency to the position. Harrison Barnes is declining but he’s a career 38 percent shooter from outside who wouldn’t be asked to guard the opponent’s best forward,” Gomez wrote. “He’s also on a short contract that expires after next season, so he could be flipped or used in a large trade next offseason. Sacramento would get savings they could use to re-sign Malik Monk by waving both players or just Graham while keeping Champagnie as cheap depth and using the 35th pick to go younger.

“It would be a risky move by the Kings to part ways with a rotation player without replacing him and a low-upside one for the Spurs, as Barnes is not a high-quality starter anymore. His shooting and veteran leadership, though, could make the deal worth it.”

Barnes would be a solid veteran for the Spurs to add this offseason.

Mock trade sees the Spurs flip Keldon Johnson for Jerami Grant

This mock trade would see the San Antonio Spurs move Keldon Johnson for Jerami Grant.

If the San Antonio Spurs want to take another step, they could choose to be aggressive on the trade market this summer. Jeje Gomez of Pounding the Rock suggests a mock trade that would send the eighth pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Keldon Johnson, and Devonte’ Graham to the Portland Trail Blazers for Jerami Grant.

“Grant is 30 years old but he does fit what the Spurs need,” Gomez wrote. “He’s a long forward who can hit threes, create in a pinch and bring athleticism on defense. He’d be an upgrade over Johnson in most areas and should bring more consistency to the position. The Blazers, meanwhile would be moving up six spots while getting younger. Devonte’ Graham would be included to make the salaries match and offer Portland the opportunity to cut some salary by waiving him while Johnson would offer Portland scoring and a contract that declines as the years go by. San Antonio would be taking on Grant’s huge contract that runs for three more years after next season, but the deal expires when whoever they pick fourth ends his rookie contract and Grant would be on a huge expiring deal the year in which Wembanyama’s extension would kick in, which would make him a good trade asset.

“Grant seems fine staying in Portland despite being in a rebuilding situation and might not be as disruptive on defense as his athleticism wanes. The Spurs value Johnson and should be hesitant to trade him for a non-star, especially considering his team-friendly contract. But it could be a mutually beneficial deal for two teams in different stages of their rebuild.”

Bringing in Grant would help the Spurs improve, but dealing a top-10 pick and Johnson seems like a fairly hefty price.

Blockbuster mock trade sees Spurs steal Devin Booker from Suns

In this mock trade, the San Antonio Spurs would land Devin Booker from the Phoenix Suns.

The San Antonio Spurs have a huge chance to improve their roster this summer. Victor Wembanyama is already one of the best players in the NBA, and if they want to, they could add some serious talent around him on the trade market. Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report wrote a mock trade that would see them land Devin Booker from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Keldon Johnson, Malaki Branham, Zach Collins, Blake Wesley, the fourth pick, the eighth pick, a 2025 first-round pick (via ATL), and a 2027 first-round pick (via ATL).

“Not to dump this otherwise fun idea into an ice bath from the start, but let’s get this disclaimer out of the way: There is almost no universe in which this deal goes down this summer,” Buckley wrote. “Booker isn’t looking for a trade, and the Suns aren’t planning to split up their stars. So, shift this hypothetical blockbuster even an inch away from the trade machine, and it probably runs out of oxygen. It still feels worth discussing, though, because Phoenix looks stuck, and San Antonio has the kind of asset collection that could eventually help a franchise un-stick itself.

“The names and picks heading to the Suns here almost don’t matter, because the Spurs have so much more to offer. If Booker was truly on the table, they might only make Victor Wembanyama off-limits. (Asking for Devin Vassell could torpedo the talks, though, or at least greatly reduce the amount of assets included with him.)

“Value-wise, this feels relatively close to what Booker is worth—and especially what he’d be worth to the Spurs. They need a primary creator to pair with Wembanyama, and Booker is one of the best in the business. He just authored his fourth career campaign with at least 25 points, five assists and two three-pointers per game. The list of players ever to match or exceed that feat is only eight names long. A Booker-Wembanyama pairing would be a vicious NBA Jam-style twosome, not to mention the foundation of a full-fledged contender for years to come. Again, the Spurs probably have no shot at Booker this summer, but it’d be worth a few phone calls to find out for sure before moving on to other primary playmaker pursuits.”

Putting Booker next to Wembanyama would create an elite duo.

Mock trade sees Spurs flip Keldon Johnson to Heat

In this mock trade, the San Antonio Spurs would send Keldon Johnson to the MIami Heat.

The San Antonio Spurs have a few needs they should look to address this summer. One of those needs is three-point shooting, as spacing the floor next to Victor Wembanyama will be crucial to their success. Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report wrote a mock trade that would see the Spurs send Keldon Johnson to the Miami Heat for Duncan Robinson and the 15th pick in the draft.

“Miami could have a massive move up its sleeve this summer,” Buckley wrote. “Or maybe the Heat’s latest star search will end up like so many of their near-misses in recent years. Then again, maybe the Heat just don’t feel the need for such a substantial change. They were bullied by the injury bug this season and still wound up 10 games above .500, escaped the play-in tournament and snagged a double-digit playoff road win against the league’s No. 1 seed. Give them a clean bill of health, and maybe they’re back rubbing elbows with the East’s elite next season.

“The Heat could still use more scoring, though, which is how Johnson might wind up on the radar. He plays with a nonstop motor and relentless hustle, and he’s skilled enough to have netted 22.0 points per game in 2022-23 and shot 39.8 percent from three-point range the prior season. Johnson would be an intriguing way of attacking Miami’s inconsistent scoring and perhaps a cost-effective one if the Heat’s developmental staff could buff the rougher areas of his skill set.”

Adding Robinson’s shooting and a first-round pick would be a solid haul for the Spurs, but perhaps they should look to use Johnson’s salary in a trade for the star instead.

Darius Garland floated as ‘ambitious trade target’ for Spurs

Darius Garland could be an interesting trade target for the San Antonio Spurs this summer.

The San Antonio Spurs should be doing everything possible this summer to improve their team around Victor Wembanyama, and there should be a plethora of stars available on the trade market for them to consider. Dan Favale of Bleacher Report floated the idea of them going after Darius Garland, listing him as an “ambitious trade target” for San Antonio.

“Pairing him with Wemby is next-level perfect,” Favale wrote. “Garland won’t be nudged off the ball as often as he is beside Mitchell, and while he’s on the smaller end, at 6’1″, the Spurs’ 7’4″ alien can cover up for anyone on defense.”

“Prying Garland out of Cleveland won’t come cheap even if he’s pushing for an exit. And any prospective package is complicated by the Cavaliers presumably angling for players over picks. Devin Vassell should remain untouchable in these talks. But Garland fits the Wemby timeline well enough for San Antonio to peddle Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan and first-rounders, and to rally together third-party helpers if the situation demands it.”

Garland’s playmaking and shot creation would take the Spurs’ offense to another level.

Mock trade sees Spurs land Lauri Markkanen in deal with Jazz

Could the San Antonio Spurs look to trade for Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen this offseason?

The San Antonio Spurs need to be aggressive this summer. They can’t afford to waste even a single year of Victor Wembanyama. What that aggressiveness will look like is a different question. It could be as simple as nailing their picks in the NBA Draft and signing guys in free agency, but the trade market could also be an option.

San Antonio has been linked to multiple names on the trade market. Adding playmaking to the mix should be a top priority, but if talent becomes available, regardless of position, the Spurs should take an interest. One guy who could be an intriguing fit would be Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen.

Nathaniel Holloway of Give Me Sport recently wrote a mock deal that would send Markkanen to San Antonio. Here’s the full outline of the trade:

Spurs receive: Lauri Markkanen

Jazz receive: Keldon Johnson, Zach Collins, eighth overall pick in 2024 NBA Draft, 2025 first-round pick (via CHI), 2026 first-round pick, 2027 first-round pick

Adding Markkanen’s shooting and shot creation next to Wembanayam would seriously help the Spurs’ offense, but it seems unlikely that Utah wants to deal him.
