Season series: New Orleans leads 3-0

San Antonio Spurs lost 110-105 to the Denver Nuggets Tuesday, covering as a 15.5-point road underdog. The Spurs outrebounded Denver 59-52, but were not able to overcome C Nikola Jokic and his 42 points and 16 rebounds. San Antonio has lost back-to-back games after winning 3 straight, but is 5-0 against the spread (ATS) in its last 5 games.

New Orleans was beaten 117-108 by the Orlando Magic Wednesday while failing to cover as a 4.5-point home favorite. G CJ McCollum scored 36 points, but that wasn’t enough to overcome the Magic shooting 51.2% from the field and 40.6% from long range. The Pelicans have lost 3 consecutive games straight up and ATS.

Spurs at Pelicans picks and predictions

Prediction

Pelicans 110, Spurs 107

Moneyline

PASS.

The Pelicans (-750) should pick up the win, but they are not worth the risk of betting on as such heavy favorites. Bet on the spread and/or total instead.

Against the spread

LEAN SPURS +11.5 (-110).

San Antonio has covered the spread in each of its last 5 games and is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 outings. New Orleans has failed to cover the spread in each of its last 3 games and is only 1-5 ATS in its last 6 games. The Spurs also covered in their last matchup vs. the Pelicans.

This is only a lean because the Pelicans are a dominant 8-2 ATS in their last 10 matchups vs. the Spurs.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 220.5 (-110).

The Under has hit in 3 of the last 4 Spurs-Pelicans meetings and is also 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in New Orleans. The Under also hit in San Antonio’s last outing and has hit in 2 of New Orleans’ last 4.

Cleveland took down the Washington Wizards 117-94 on Friday as a 5.5-point home favorite. It has won 3 of its last 4 games and is 7-3 in its last 10 and 6-4 against the spread (ATS). This season they are 38-32-3 ATS.

The Nets fell 108-102 at home to the Denver Nuggets on Friday failing to cover as a 3-point home underdog. It has lost 3 games in a row and is 5-5 in its last 10. During that stretch, Brooklyn is 6-4 ATS to improve to 36-33-2 ATS this season.

Cavaliers at Nets picks and predictions

Prediction

Cavaliers 115, Nets 108

Moneyline

PASS.

At -150 odds, the spread presents a better play on a Cavs team that is looking to cement itself as a top team in the East. The spread presents a more profitable play.

Against the spread

LEAN CAVALIERS -3.5 (-105).

Cleveland is 6-2 in its last 8 games including 3-1 on the road and is coming off a dominant victory on Friday while Brooklyn has dropped 3 in a row and 4 of its last 6 including back-to-back home games. While this game should remain close, Cleveland has shown that it should not be bet against due to its current form.

The Cavs are 3-2 ATS in their last 5 road games while the Nets are 2-3 ATS in their last 5 home games. According to NBA.com, the Cavs have a net rating of 5.8 (1st) while the Nets have a rating of 0.8 (12th). The Cavaliers’ efficiency will allow them to put Brooklyn on its heels and steal a road win.

Over/Under

BET OVER 218.5 (-110).

With C Jarrett Allen questionable for the game, the Cavs’ top-ranked defense in opponent points per game may not have its anchor, meaning easier opportunities for the Nets to score. The Nets’ offense ranks 4th in FG  percentage while the Cavs’ offense ranks 6th in the same metric. Both teams will be looking to drill the paint and spread the ball around to create high-probability-scoring opportunities.

The Over is 7-1 in the Cavs’ last 8 games following an outright victory and 7-1 in their last 8 road games. The Over is 5-1 in their last 6 games following a ATS win and 5-1 in their last 6 road games against a team with a winning home record.

San Antonio Spurs at New Orleans Pelicans odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s San Antonio Spurs at New Orleans Pelicans NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The San Antonio Spurs (29-29) are in the Big Easy Saturday for an 8 p.m. ET game against the New Orleans Pelicans (26-33) at Smoothie King Center. Below, we analyze the Spurs-Pelicans odds and lines, with NBA picks and predictions.

San Antonio is 3-1 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) over its last four games. Each game was decided by at least 15 points with the latest being a 106-91 victory over the Detroit Pistons Thursday.

NOLA snapped a four-game losing skid (0-4 ATS) Thursday by beating up on the hapless Orlando Magic 135-100. Two of those losses were against the white-hot New York Knicks team, with others coming against the surging Washington Wizards and first-place Brooklyn Nets.

The Spurs split their first two meetings with the Pelicans this season. Each team has a win by 3 points. San Antonio beat NOLA in five of the last six head-to-head meetings and has covered the spread in four straight.

Spurs at Pelicans: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Pelicans 122, Spurs 104

Money line (ML)

This is as close to a playoff game for the PELICANS (-150) as a regular-season game gets. NOLA is 11th in the Western Conference. The Pelicans are 3.5 games behind the 10th-seeded Spurs for the final seed in the postseason play-in tournament.

If DeRozan can’t play it would mean the Spurs are without their leading scorer and assist man and Gay sitting out would hurt San Antonio’s interior defense.

According to CleaningTheGlass.com, Gay is in the 97th percentile of bigs for on-off court defensive effective field-goal percentage and 80th percentile for defensive field-goal percentage of attempts at the rim.

Missing a key defensive big is not ideal if you’re hoping to contain Pelicans PF Zion Williamson. He leads the NBA in points in the paint per game.

TAKE PELICANS (-150) for 1 unit.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS because this is a “bad spot” for the Pelicans -3 (-110) and a good one for the Spurs +3 (-110).

San Antonio is 11-4 ATS as a road dog and NOLA is 6-13 ATS as a home favorite this season.

Over/Under (O/U)

Slight “LEAN” to the UNDER 227.5 (-105) for a quarter unit if at all because I prefer the sides more than the total in this game.

The pro-Under arguments are NOLA being 24th in offensive rating this month, the Under cashing in five straight games for San Antonio and in four of the last five Spurs-Pelicans meetings.

Spurs at Pelicans: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Pelicans 122, Spurs 111

Money line (ML)

The Pelicans (-200) are just a little too steep for my liking, as I generally set a limit at -180 and stick with it on money lines. Plus, it’s a risky play with the Spurs (+165) rolling in with two wins in their first two games.

PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The PELICANS -4.5 (-115) are even money at home, and for good reason. They split a pair of road games to open, winning in Toronto on Dec. 23, 113-99, and they fell in Miami by a 111-98 score on Christmas Day. The Spurs +4.5 (-105) might be the perfect opponent for a home opener, as San Antonio is just 8-21 ATS in its last 29 trips to the Crescent City.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 228.5 (-110) is worth a small-unit play despite the fact the Under has hit in the first two games for NOLA. The Over has cashed in both games for San Antonio, and the Over is also 4-1 in the past five meetings in the Big Easy between these two sides. Look for a higher-scoring game on Sunday.
