Colts nominated for ‘Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year’ award

The Colts have been nominated for the ‘Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year’ award.

The Indianapolis Colts have been nominated for the “Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year” award by ESPN.

According to ESPN, the award is given to the team “that demonstrates how teamwork can create a measurable impact on a community or cause.”

For the Colts, that is undoubtedly their “Kicking the Stigma” initiative, which focuses on bringing light to improving mental health.

Along with the Colts, nominees for the award include the New York Jets, Connecticut Suns and San Antonio Spurs.

Here’s what the ESPN release said about the Colts as nominees for this award:

One in five American adults will suffer from some form of a mental health disorder in their lifetime. That’s why the Colts became the first major sports franchise to launch a sweeping initiative to raise awareness about mental health disorders, remove the stigma associated with mental health, and raise funds to support projects and organizations to improve mental health. That effort, Kicking The Stigma, launched in 2020 and already has financially supported close to 50 organizations in Indiana and beyond. The team has funded anti-stigma training, mental health first aid, a major university institute to study and battle stigma, national PSAs, and efforts to educate fans. The team also has an intentional focus on targeting underserved populations to ensure they have access to important resources and helping train and develop more mental health professionals.

The winner of the award will be announced at the 2023 ESPYS, which takes place July 12 at 8:00 p.m. ET from Los Angeles.

Broncos are a finalist for ESPN’s 2020 Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year Award

The Denver Broncos are among four finalists for ESPN’s 2020 Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year Award.

The Denver Broncos are among four finalists for ESPN’s 2020 Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year Award, the network announced Wednesday. The other finalists are the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB), New York City FC (MLS) and Sacramento Kings (NBA).

“The Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year Award is given to a sports franchise that demonstrates how teamwork can create a measurable impact on a community or cause,” according to a press release from the Broncos.

ESPN created the award six years ago and Denver is the second NFL team to be named a finalist for the award. Denver Broncos Charities will receive a $25,000 grant for being a finalist and an additional $100,000 grant if the club wins the award. The winner will be announced during the ESPYs on Sunday, June 21.

Over the last year, 120 different Broncos players volunteered for 874 appearances and events, totaling 1,750 hours of community service. The franchise donates an average of more than $1.5 million per year to the community. This year alone, the organization (including alumni) has donated nearly $1 million to Colorado’s COVID Relief Fund.
