Report: Nets reached out to Spike Lee in midst of Knicks controversy

Spike Lee isn’t going to anymore New York Knicks games this season. Apparently, that gave the Brooklyn Nets an idea.

A video of Spike Lee and Madison Square Garden security surfaced on Monday and has led to a PR nightmare for the New York Knicks.

The celebrity superfan went on ESPN’s “First Take” to explain what happened between him and security at the Garden. Lee expressed he is being harassed by the organization.

The controversy has escalated to the point where the Academy Award-winning director has decided he won’t attend any more games at the Garden this year.

Apparently, the Brooklyn Nets saw this development as an opportunity.

Sopan Deb of the New York Times spoke with Lee, who said he heard from the Nets in the midst of things:

I heard from the Brooklyn Nets. My office is in Fort Greene. Barclays [Center] is four blocks away. But I respect them. I’m not going to let anybody take away my love for the orange and blue skies. It’s not happening. I wish the Nets luck. But that ain’t happening.

Although Lee is taking a break from games for the remainder of 2019-20, he plans to be back at Garden all of next season.

The Brooklyn Nets are doing their very best to pry Spike Lee away from the Knicks

Spike has to make the jump

Never thought we’d see the day where a rift would form between the Knicks and Spike Lee, but here we are.

Lee is maybe the Knicks biggest super fan and James Dolan is chasing him out the door…or media entrance. Whichever fits best. You absolutely hate to see it.

The Knicks have already released their statement calling Spike a liar. Spike made a phone call and called the Knicks liars right back.

We’ve all seen this story before, right? This is the point in the break up where you’re not really broken up but you know that text is probably coming. Yes, the Knicks probably break up through text.

The Nets are ready to swoop in as SOON as the Knicks hit send on that, by the way. They’re doing all the dirty macking possible right now in coaxing Lee to come sit courtside at Barclays and it’s hilarious.

They posted a since deleted tweet of Lee posing with Kevin Durant trolling the Knicks about the handshake between Dolan and Lee.

And, apparently, they’ve already made a call to Lee in trying to get him to change allegiances.

Scary times, Knicks fans. Scary times.

Reggie Miller playfully mocks the Knicks over recent feud with Spike Lee

“The MIGHTY have fallen.”

Spike Lee has long been the New York Knicks’ most notable celebrity fan. He’s there at nearly every Knicks home game, sitting at the same courtside seat at Madison Square Garden that he’s occupied for decades.

But at least for the rest of the 2020 season, Lee is done with the Knicks. And even Spike Lee’s old rival had to join in on the Knicks roasting.

In case you haven’t caught up on the drama, video hit Twitter on Monday night of Lee getting into an argument with MSG staff. The Knicks tried to spin the video as a misunderstanding over an employee-entrance policy, but on Tuesday, Lee went on ESPN’s First Take to undercut the Knicks’ narrative entirely.

Reggie Miller, who had an infamous back-and-forth with Lee during the 1995 NBA playoffs, used Lee’s feud as another reason to mock the Knicks.

Miller jokingly tried to recruit Lee over to the Pacers, saying that this incident wouldn’t happen at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

While it doesn’t sound like Lee plans to give up on his Knicks fandom, he’s done with the team for this season. It’s just another example of James Dolan alienating Knicks fans.

Dear Knicks: Please don’t lose Spike Lee

Don’t drive away your biggest fan.

The list of New York Knicks screw-ups is a mile long and seems to grow by the day.

It’s not just the product being put out on the court. It’s also what happens in and around Madison Square Garden — fans being confronted by security for chanting anti-ownership remarks, getting fined by the NBA for barring a local reporter from events, the Charles Oakley feud with owner James Dolan … it goes on … and on and on.

And that brings us to Monday night’s absurdity: Spike Lee, by far the most famous and loyal Knicks fan in the universe — who continues to sit court-side dutifully night in and out as the franchise flounders — claimed he was being “harassed” by Dolan. He says he was confronted by security about using the employees’ entrance (which he says he’s been using for over 20 years); cameras caught Lee screaming at guards before he eventually made his way to his usual seat.

The drama didn’t simmer away on Tuesday. In typical Knicks fashion, it exploded.

Of course, the Knicks responded later in the afternoon by pushing back and sharing photos that supposedly counter what Lee said:

It doesn’t matter if the Knicks are right about repeatedly telling Lee not to use the entrance. It doesn’t matter if he he did or did not have a handshake with Dolan. What matters is keeping Lee happy.

There’s simply no way the Knicks should be arguing publicly with Lee. In some ways he is the face of the franchise — a statement on how bad the on-court product has been, but also about his own loyalty and passion.

The way to put out this fire is simple: take out everything in the Knicks’ statement except for the fact that Lee is welcome to the Garden as usual. That’s it. Move on. Let Lee descend from the roof of the building each game if he wants to. He’s that important.

Or, if this issue of entrances is truly so vital, have this confrontation privately.

Instead the Knicks let it all become public — drastically so — and are now doubling down and trying to look “right,” even though this isn’t some sort of competition at all. Dolan insists on publicly fighting even the slightest of slights, and that approach — along with the team’s struggles — has angered and alienated fans for years.

It feels like Lee would NEVER leave the Knicks, even in their darkest hours. But if he did? You thought the response to the Kristaps Porzingis trade was bad? Imagine if the one person who’s represented all the hope and love of the fanbase for decades called it quits.

Whatever you do, Knicks, don’t lose Spike.
