No. 5 DeSoto vs. No. 25 Southlake Carroll: How to watch the Texas high school football playoff game

Texas high school football kicks off with a major 6A matchup on Saturday.

It’s a big-time Super 25 matchup this Saturday in Texas, as No. 5 DeSoto takes on No. 25 Southlake Carroll in the 6A-Division II semifinals.

The Eagles have to continued to impress in 2023, taking the massive win over No. 11 Duncanville (then ranked No. 3) in the regular season and building on that momentum all season—which has escalated in the playoffs.

Like we noted last week, the offense continues to shine, lighting up the scoreboard to the tune of nearly 53 points per game. Sam Houston State commit D.J. Bailey leads the attack under center, with Marvin Duffey and 4-star running back Deondrae Riden handling the running game, while 4-star SMU commit Daylon Singleton (class of 2025) is a focus outside.

Up front, 6-foot-7 Byron Washington and 6-foot-4 Ronnell McLain solidify an offensive line that is truly special — and effective.

On the other sideline, Southlake Carroll is rolling, and looking to move toward adding state title No. 9 to the mantle.

Can the Dragons stop the soaring Eagles?

In short, especially when looking at recent numbers — 100 percent, yes.

Southlake Carroll’s lone loss on the season came at the hands of Bryon Nelson in late October, which knocked the team out of the Super 25. But the Dragons didn’t let that bump in the 2023 road derail the mission.

Instead, they rattled off five wins to the tune of 283 points scored and 35 points allowed, which included a 56-7 revenge win against Byron Nelson last week.

Heading into the semifinals, Southlake Carroll is back in the Super 25, with an offense that can create a ton of problems on the ground and through the air.

Sophomore running back Davis Penn has been solid in the backfield, while fellow classmate Riley Wormley has also been tough on the run. Georgia Tech committ Graham Knowles leads the attack from under center, and his 13-of-16 passing clinic last week to receivers like Clayton Wayland should create confidence heading into this Long Star State headliner.

Will it be enough?

Quinn Ewers reportedly skipping senior year, enrolling early at Ohio State

High school football’s top-rated quarterback recruit is reportedly a high school student no longer.

High school football’s top-rated quarterback recruit is reportedly a high school student no longer.

Southlake Carroll star signal-caller Quinn Ewers will skip his senior year of high school and enroll early at Ohio State to take advantage of NIL opportunities at the collegiate level. The news was first reported by Inside Texas managing editor Justin Wells.

Whispers that Ewers was considering forgoing his senior year of high school in favor of an early arrival in Columbus first started swirling last week. Ewers had just one more high school class to complete before he could graduate early and enroll at Ohio State and it now looks like he has enough high school credits in his back pocket to make the leap.

Ewers’ impending departure deals a major blow to Southlake Carroll ahead of the 2021 high school football season. Ewers led a loaded Southlake Carroll team to a state championship game last season, but the Dragons ultimately fell short against Clemson quarterback commit Cade Klubnik and Austin Westlake.

Ewers is the No. 1 overall recruit and No. 1 quarterback in the class of 2022, according to 247Sports. His scouting report reads:

Good height with a plus frame. Pro-style QB with athleticism and mobility that qualify for a dual-threat label. Elite improvisational QB who can extend plays and remain accurate on the move. Throws with a smooth, easy delivery and varies arm angles as needed. Impressive velocity and spin rate really show on routes over the middle and down the seams. Field-stretching vertical arm strength to consistently hit big plays over the top. Also shows encouraging touch on timing patterns and downfield routes that require it. Good runner by design or scramble. Understands how to protect himself as a runner and minimize shots. Shows encouraging pocket presence and awareness. Senses pressure and knows how to react to it. Also willing to stand and deliver under duress and will take a big shot if it means hanging in there to make the necessary throw. Occasionally will take risks, but that also is part of what makes him so good. Release quickness is good in general but could still quicken a bit at times. Elite QB prospect at the top of the 2022 cycle, at his position and across the board. Future impact high-major starter with long-term potential to be taken high in the NFL Draft.

Ohio State QB commit Quinn Ewers does ‘O-H’ to Alabama signee

Quinn Ewers decided to have some fun with Alabama signee Kendall Blackshire after Southlake Carroll’s upset of Duncanville on Saturday.

Top 2022 quarterback recruit and Ohio State commit Quinn Ewers decided to have a little fun with Alabama signee Kendrick Blackshire after Southlake Carroll’s stunning upset over Duncanville in the Texas 6A semifinals on Saturday.

With the National Championship game between Alabama and Ohio State only 48 hours away at the time, the beef spilled over to the high school football field. Video caught Ewers flashing Ohio State’s famous “O-H” symbol at Blackshire when the two met at midfield postgame.

It goes without saying Ewers’ gesture was done in good nature, as both players shared a smile and a laugh. Ewers got the best of Blackshire and Duncanville in the end, though, throwing for 167 yards and registering two touchdowns in a win over the Panthers.

Blackshire will now begin preparing for his career at Alabama, while Ewers’ focus shifts to Austin Westlake in the Texas 6A championship game this weekend. Who knows, though? Maybe Blackshire and Ewers will meet again in a national championship game of their own down the line.
