Tale of the Tape: Individual Leaders – Notre Dame vs. Southern Utah

How much does Miles’ absence change things?

Well, this chart looks different from what it did early this morning, at least on one side. But with the sobering news that Notre Dame won’t have [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] for the NCAA Tournament, adjustments were necessary. The result is [autotag]Sonia Citron[/autotag] being the best player in nearly every category, and it also is kind of scary. While few Irish fans doubt her abilities, suddenly having to carry the in Miles’ absence surely will take a toll to some degree.

On the flip side, the Thunderbirds are a team more spread out as far as leaders. Miles being out flips a few categories or at least makes them closer. With the Irish’s guard play weakened by the losses of Miles and [autotag]Dara Mabrey[/autotag], they’ll have to try and win this and every tournament game in the paint. They have the personnel to do it, but will it be enough to get out of the first weekend?

BREAKING: Notre Dame star Olivia Miles will miss NCAA Tournament

Definitely not what anyone wanted to hear.

Notre Dame’s path to its third national championship just got a lot tougher. After two-and-a-half weeks of speculation, the worst fears about [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag]’ availability for the NCAA Tournament have come true. Despite the best efforts of the Irish’s medical staff, the team will be without its best player for March Madness:

This is the second season-ending knee injury for the Irish in an otherwise excellent season. [autotag]Dara Mabrey[/autotag], another leader, went down for the season in January. While the Irish have done fine without her and and won a single ACC Tournament game without Miles, who suffered her injury in the regular-season finale, this team suddenly looks a lot more vulnerable.

There is little doubt that this will take some of the wind out of the Purcell Pavilion atmosphere when the Irish begin tournament play against Southern Utah. However, they have no choice but to press on. While this news definitely lowers the ceiling for this year’s team, especially with South Carolina likely looming later in Greenville Regional 1, you never know what could happen. That’s what this time is about after all.

Tale of the Tape: Team Stats – Notre Dame vs. Southern Utah

Like the matchup?

Third-seeded Notre Dame opens the NCAA Tournament against 14-seeded Southern Utah, and the advantages are befitting of this type of matchup. The Irish are far and away better when it comes to both scoring and allowing points. They’re good at those in the national rankings, too, and that’s led to one of the best scoring margins in the country. The assists also are up there, undoubtedly because of the uncertain-for-this-game-as-of-this-writing [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag].

The Thunderbirds are a similarly strong defensive team as they are high in the national rankings in blocks and rebounding margin along with the Irish. Offensively, they have their best advantage at the free-throw line, and they also shoot pretty well. But that turnover margin jumps out as one of the worst in the country and by far the worst of any tournament team. If they hold to form in that area, they’ll be one-and-done in South Bend.

Notre Dame has third seed in NCAA Tournament, opens vs. Southern Utah

Get ready to rock Purcell Pavilion in the tournament, Irish fans!

It turned out [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag]’ uncertainty for the NCAA Tournament was irrelevant as far as Notre Dame’s seeding. The Irish received the third seed in Greenville Regional 1 and will face 14th-seeded Southern Utah, a first-time opponent for the program. The seeding means the Irish will host the first two rounds at Purcell Pavilion. If they beat the Thunderbirds, they will face either Creighton or the winner of the First Four game between Illinois and Mississippi State.

Irish fans might feel a little iffy about the regional because their team won’t be able to escape it without going through top-ranked and undefeated South Carolina. However, that bridge will be crossed when the time comes. For now, the Irish can enjoy the fact that their body of work was strong enough that they will get to stay home to begin their quest for their third national championship. Oh, and let’s hope Miles is healthy when the tournament begins.

Ducks WBB recap: A strong defensive third quarter secures victory

A win is a win, but the Oregon women’s basketball team was hoping for a better fourth quarter in the 66-54 victory over S. Utah.

That halftime talk from head coach Kelly Graves must have been interesting, to say the least. The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team got defensive in the second half and defeated Southern Utah 66-54.

Oregon outscored the Thunderbirds 24-8 in the third quarter after a lackluster first half where the Ducks were up just 10 at halftime.

It’s a good thing Oregon built up a good lead because the fourth quarter wasn’t a pretty one for the home team. Southern Utah claimed a 21-7 advantage for the remaining 10 minutes of the game, which won’t make Graves too happy.

Competition is going to ramp up in a big way come Thursday as the Ducks will open up the PK85 Invitational with No. 13 North Carolina on Nov. 24 and then either No. 8 Iowa State or Michigan State Nov. 27.

Utah vs Southern Utah Game Preview

Why Southern Utah Will Win

The Thunderbirds got to have some fun against St. Thomas of Minnesota – it’s still trying to play up to the FCS level after moving up from Division III last year – with a 44-13 win.

Justin Miller and the passing game were great, the defense forced four takeaways and held on drive after drive, and now the team gets a shot at a Utah team coming off a painfully tough road loss to Florida.

The Utes get San Diego State up next before the Pac-12 schedule kicks in. They’ll be looking at this as a scrimmage, and Southern Utah has to bomb away to try making this interesting.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Utah Will Win

The Thunderbirds went 1-11 last season and still have a long, long way to go defensively.

Utah can run as much as it wants to in this, but the idea will be to get the timing and pop of the passing game down a bit better. Cameron Rising wasn’t bad – at least until the final interception when playing it safe and getting a field goal would’ve been just fine in the 29-26 loss – and it’s all going to kick in fast as the team tries to erase the pain of Gainesville.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Utah usually doesn’t use these types of games to bury teams. It gets the job done, gets the backups in, and gets out – it’s highly doubtful this will be a 65-0 wipeout, and it’s not likely that any sort of a statement will need to be made.

This is about tweaking, getting back on track, and getting ready for SDSU.

It’ll be over after a few drives.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

San Jose State (0-0) vs Southern Utah (0-0) Game Preview

Why Southern Utah Will Win

The Thunderbirds got in a half-season worth of live games with the spring session, and while they went 1-5, that’s misleading. Four of the five losses were by three points or fewer – there are a whole lot of positives for San Jose State to worry about.

Southern Utah has a terrific pass rush, the offensive line is outstanding in pass protection – a must against the Spartan defensive front – and the passing game is good enough to keep up. However …

Why San Jose State Will Win

Southern Utah doesn’t bomb away. It’s a mid-range throwing team that wasn’t great in the clutch and couldn’t run the ball enough to matter.

The Spartan defense should once again be among the best in the Mountain West with ten starters returning. Points are going to be hard to come by, the secondary should be able to keep the downfield plays from happening, and the pass rush really should be solid even against the good Thunderbird offensive front.

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

What’s Going To Happen

Southern Utah needs takeaways and San Jose State mistakes to pull this off, but it’s not going to happen. The Spartan defense will have a few rough drives, but it’ll clamp down in the second half, the offensive side will be balanced and efficient, and it’ll be a strong warm-up performance to ease back into the end of 2020 regular season groove.
