Southern Miss Golden Eagles College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense that should’ve been a whole lot better was fine early, struggled late, and now has eight starters expected to return for new head coach Will Hall. The O that came up with 372 yards and 25 points per game should be more balanced, efficient, and explosive – at least that’s the goal. It all starts with …

– The running game has to be stronger because the offensive front has to be better. Four starters should be back around 6-5, 339-pound former JUCO transfer Khalique Washington, a potential all-star talent at left tackle who’ll get a look from the pro types.

If the line is just okay, the backs will do the rest with the 1-2 punch of Frank Gore Jr. and Darius Maberry quick enough and explosive enough to average close to six yards per pop. Gore led the way with 708 yards and two scores.

The quarterback situation should be set around Trey Lowe, a former West Virginia Mountaineer who got his feet wet last year as one of the three quarterbacks who saw plenty of work. Tate Whatley is gone and Jack Abraham left for Mississippi State, but Louisville transfer Tee Webb will get a shot. Mobility is a factor, but having one guy to rely on will be a big deal compared to last year.

The receiving corps is in place to help the cause. The tight ends played a huge role last year – three caught eight passes or more, and they’re all back – but veteran WR Tim Jones is done. Leading receiver Jason Brownlee is a 6-3 deep threat who caught 34 passes for 610 yards and five scores, and Demarcus Jones and Antoine Robinson are midrange veterans to rely on.

Southern Miss Football Schedule 2021

2021 Conference USA Football Schedule

Sept. 18 Troy

Sept. 25 at Alabama

Oct. 2 at Rice

Oct. 9 UTEP

Oct. 16 UAB

Oct. 23 OPEN DATE

Oct. 30 at Middle Tennessee

Nov. 6 North Texas

Nov. 13 at UTSA

Nov. 20 at Louisiana Tech

Nov. 27 FIU

Dec. 4 Conference USA Championship

Games vs. The East: FIU, at Middle Tennessee

Missed Teams From The East: Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Marshall, Old Dominion, WKU

Southern Miss Golden Eagles Football Schedule Analysis: The non-conference slate isn’t bad. Forget the date at Alabama, the Golden Eagles under new head coach Will Hall can shoot for 3-0 against at South Alabama, Grambling and Troy.

There are two back-to-back road games that should all be a problem – Bama, Rice, UTSA and Louisiana Tech – but the UAB and North Texas games are at home and closing out at home against FIU isn’t bad.

Missing Marshall, Florida Atlantic and WKU from the East is massive, Going to Middle Tennessee isn’t easy, but again, the date with FIU is at home.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Southern Miss Golden Eagles Offense 3 Things To Know

– TheSouthern Miss offense wasn’t good enough. It had good parts, it had good moments, and it had a good defense to pick up the slack, but there wasn’t any running game, and the O finished averaging just 407 yards and 27 points per game.

There’s too much talent returning to be so mediocre again. It starts with new offensive coordinator Matt Kubik improving the ground attack.

The offensive line was good in pass protection, but it was one of the worst in America in giving up tackles for loss – allowing over seven per game. On the plus side, four starters are expected back around rising sophomore Coker Wright at one of the tackle spots and Arvin Fletcher at guard. There’s good size and decent depth – this group has to be better.

There are a ton of running back options who got in a little work, and now they need room to move. 220-pound senior Kevin Perkins came in from the JUCO thanks and ran for a team-high 547 yards with three scores, and 242-pound banger Steven Anderson is back after scoring three times. The ground game as a whole, though, finished with just 1,527 yards and averaged 3.5 yards per carry.

The Golden Eagles have their quarterback. Jack Abraham took the job two years ago, and improved last season hitting 68% of his passes for almost 3,500 yards with 19 scores. Backup Tate Whatley is back, but as the bowl loss to Tulane showed, he needs to be a whole lot better when he gets his chances.

Star receiver Quez Watkins is now a Philadelphia Eagle, and five of the top seven pass catchers are gone, but senior Tim Jones is back after leading the team with 73 catches for 902 yards and three scores.

Speedster Jaylond Adams is back after averaging over 16 yards per catch, but it’s a thin overall group that needs the recruiting class and a slew of transfers to bump things up. The hope is for Arkansas transfer Grayson Gunter to take over the tight end job right away.
