South Carolina at Ole Miss: Three things to know

  • South Carolina followed up its impressive 30-22 win over Auburn (Oct. 17) by allowing 100 points over its next two games. USC lost both — 52-24 at LSU and 48-3 at home vs. Texas A&M — and due to a bye in between, the Gamecocks are in search of their first win in nearly a month.
  • The Rebels are coming off a bye week. Two weeks ago, Ole Miss racked up 645 total yards in a 54-21 road win at Vanderbilt. Sophomore QB Matt Corral went 31-for-34 and tossed six touchdown passes in the victory over the Commodores. Ole Miss has totaled more than 600 yards in three games this season, and the Rebels’ 541 yards per game ranks sixth in FBS.
  • South Carolina ranks 93rd in the nation in allowing a 45.3% third-down success rate. The Gamecocks have been picked apart at a 75.8% rate over their last two games.

South Carolina at Ole Miss: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Ole Miss 42, South Carolina 38

Money line (ML)

Figure on some regression in South Carolina’s third-down conversions on the defensive side of the ball. Also for the Gamecocks, last week’s 48-3 blowout loss to Texas A&M included a minus-2 in turnovers, two garbage-time scores and two short-field scores for the Aggies. Peg South Carolina as a near-30% proposition this Saturday, so BACK THE GAMECOCKS (+265) at what is a solid price.

Against the spread (ATS)

What seems to be overlooked here is just how bad the Ole Miss defense is. A Big 12-style touchdown trade figures to ensue in this one. Figure USC as staying within 3-to-10 points and BACK THE GAMECOCKS +11.5 (-115).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over is 4-1 over the last five meetings between the Gamecocks and Rebels. With these two defenses — both ranking in the FBS bottom-15 in key measures like success rate allowed and run stuffs — Saturday’s contest figures to continue that trend.

The Rebels are allowing 40.7 points per game (ranked 116th out of 123 FBS teams) as well as 533.5 total yards per game (ranked 120th). Figure on Ole Miss getting a lead (against a banged-up and below-average South Carolina defense) and having trouble keeping it in a back-and-forth. BACK THE OVER 70.5 (-110).
