Former Celtics two way point guard Tremont Waters traded to Los Angeles Lakers G League team

Waters will now suit up for the South Bay Lakers when he isn’t being called up to play with the parent club.

There have not been too many players in the 75-year history of the NBA who have played for both the Boston Celtics and their longtime rival Los Angeles Lakers, but there might soon be one more to add to the short list of such players.

According to a press release put out by the Lakers’ G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, the developmental team of Los Angeles announced that it had acquired the services of former Celtics two way floor general Tremont Waters and a 2022 G League draft second-round pick in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks’ G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, for guard Frank Mason III and South Bay’s 2022 NBA G League first-round draft pick.

The LSU product has earned two 10-day contracts this season, one from the Toronto Raptors in late December, and another from the Washington Wizards, and could conceivably see floor time with the Lakers.

South Bay Lakers’ Mason Jones wins G League Player of the Month

Los Angeles Lakers two-way player Mason Jones won the G League Player of the Month for January.

South Bay Lakers guard Mason Jones won the G League Player of the Month for January, the league announced Tuesday.

Jones, who is on a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, put up some ridiculous numbers throughout the course of the month that definitely warranted recognition.

The 6-foot-4 guard posted 28 points, 8.8 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 51.7% from the field. He has been doing it all for South Bay, which currently has a 6-3 record in the Western Conference. That is tied with the Iowa Wolves for second place in the standings.

Jones appeared in two games for Los Angeles in late December while the team had several players out due to health and safety protocols but has not played since.

South Bay Lakers guard Andre Ingram discusses winning ‘Wheel of Fortune’

Andre Ingram of the South Bay Lakers recently won $31,750 on the popular show “Wheel of Fortune” and he explained how he feels about it all.

Andre Ingram has gone viral a few times the last couple of years, most recently by winning the popular game show “Wheel of Fortune.”

Ingram, a guard for the South Bay Lakers, was a contestant on the show on Dec. 10. He won the show. Even though he didn’t win the bonus round, he still took home $31,750.

Ingram explained what winning felt like, via David Aldridge of The Athletic:

“I just seem to remember I couldn’t stop smiling,” Ingram said, recalling when host Pat Sajak declared him the night’s big winner.

“I couldn’t control myself,” he added. “Cheeks were hurting afterwards. Quite surreal that he says that. I’m just in that moment. I’m just taking it all in, like they say. I guess it’s easier to do that when you’ve been having some success with it. I was just genuinely enjoying, at that point, everything about it. Just happy that that’s Pat Sajak, that it’s Vanna White, ’cause you know how long they’ve been doing it. Who’s to say they won’t have another host soon? So to meet them, that’s the show that I wanted to be on.”

Ingram added that taxes will cut into his earnings from the show, but he’s still in awe of meeting Sajak and White, two people he watched on television for a long time:

“They make sure you know up front — the tax man is coming,” he said. “And … you don’t get paid for a few months, until after your show airs. It’ll be on time when I need it. Right now, I’m just truly enjoying the experience of it all. I’m still grateful for it. I think about it often. You don’t forget something like that.”

South Bay Lakers guard Mac McClung signs with Bulls

The Chicago Bulls signed Mac McClung from the South Bay Lakers roster.

The Chicago Bulls picked up South Bay Lakers guard Mac McClung on a 10-day deal via hardship exemption, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

McClung, an undrafted rookie, signed a training camp deal with the Los Angeles Lakers over the summer and played for the Summer League team, with some minutes in the preseason.

However, the Lakers released him as part of final roster cuts but inked him to a G League contract to keep him in the system.

But because the league is going through a rough situation with health and safety protocols, teams can now sign replacement players to fill in the gaps. The Bulls have dealt with missing several key players, so McClung will help the backcourt.

Through 13 games with South Bay, McClung averaged 19.5 points and 6.2 assists while shooting 47.5% overall and 39.7% from 3-point range.

It’ll be interesting to see if McClung ends up back in L.A. after his 10-day expires.

Trevor Ariza, Rajon Rondo, Kent Bazemore to practice with South Bay Lakers Monday

The Los Angeles Lakers are sending three players to practice with its G League affiliate Monday.

The Los Angeles Lakers are sending three players to practice with the South Bay Lakers, its G League affiliate, Monday.

Trevor Ariza, Rajon Rondo and Kent Bazemore are those players and have different reasons for the short move.

Ariza is progressing from the ankle injury he suffered before the preseason started. He has yet to make his debut this season, so getting time with South Bay will help him ramp up his conditioning in order to return to the first team.

Rondo and Bazemore have each fallen out of the rotation, so this time allows them to stay ready. Rondo has not played since Nov. 30 when he logged nine minutes in a blowout win of the Sacramento Kings. Bazemore has appeared in garbage-time situations in three of the last six games.

All three players signed one-year deals worth the veteran minimum this summer.

Bulls sign South Bay Lakers veteran forward Stanley Johnson

The Chicago Bulls picked up a veteran forward from the Los Angeles Lakers’ G League team.

The Chicago Bulls have signed South Bay Lakers forward Stanley Johnson, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The signing is via hardship exemption because the Bulls have several players in health and safety protocols, including DeMar DeRozan.

Johnson went to training camp with the Bulls but didn’t make the cut for the 15-man roster.

The former No. 8 overall pick in the 2015 draft joined South Bay in mid-November. In six games, Johnson averaged 15.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.2 steals while shooting 40.5% overall on 12.3 attempts and 28.6% from deep on 5.8 attempts.

His defensive presence at the forward position could’ve been useful for the Los Angeles Lakers, a team short on depth in that department, but that didn’t happen.

South Bay Lakers acquire former first-round pick Stanley Johnson

The South Bay Lakers of the G League added a former first-round pick to the roster.

The South Bay Lakers announced Wednesday Stanley Johnson is joining the roster.

Johnson, who was picked at No. 8 by the Detroit Pistons in the 2015 NBA draft, is a six-year veteran who will provide plenty of experience to the roster. Andre Ingram and Frank Mason III are among the veterans on the squad.

Johnson played 61 games with the Toronto Raptors last year, primarily at power forward. At 6-foot-6, defense at the forward spot has always been his main skill, but his offensive deficiencies are why he’s bounced around the basketball spectrum.

He has a career field goal percentage of 37.5% and a career 3-point percentage of 29.8%.

The only way the Los Angeles Lakers could use his size is if a player is released. Avery Bradley is on a non-guaranteed deal, but it’s unclear if L.A. would want to let go of a proven performer at both ends of the court for an undersized forward who excels at only one end.
