Why Bronny James scoring 30 points in the G League is so significant

Bronny was never known as a scorer, so this was a HUGE deal.

Los Angeles Lakers draftee Bronny James played his first road game in the G League and managed to score 30 points, and that is a big deal.

James, who was selected at No. 55 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, had scored just 4 points across 7 games when suiting up for the Lakers. But with the South Bay Lakers in the G League, he would have more opportunity to actually develop and play real minutes with the ball in his hands.

He made the most of the opportunity, as 30 points against pros is no small accomplishment. But it is also entirely out of character for his playing style and archetype.

With help from Cerebro Sports, we looked at every game that Bronny has played tracked in their database since had just turned 15 years old.

That spans 115 matches across high school at Sierra Canyon, AAU tournaments with his team Strive For Greatness, various other competition including the California Basketball Club in France, and college.

During that fairly large sample size, mostly against high schoolers, Bronny has averaged 8.1 points per game. While his defense has always impressed scouts, no one would call LeBron’s son a certified bucket.

BRONNY JAMES: Scouting him in 2022 taught me that his defense will be what could get him a shot in the NBA

In fact, across those first 114 games before last night, he had only exceeded 20 points in just 5 instances. It happened twice at Peach Jam while playing AAU basketball for Nike EYBL in 2022, twice with California Basketball Club, and once at Sierra Canyon at the Les Schwab Invitational.

At every step, he always played with elite talent in more of an off-ball role. This helps in some ways, but it means that unlike Gilbert Arenas’ son Alijah, he has never had the chance to run his own offense.

His career-high at USC was just 15 points, although he was recovering from cardiac arrest that delayed the start of his only collegiate campaign.

Even before the health score, though, a 30-point game was fairly unheard of for Bronny. He had done it just once before, dropping 31 points for CBC at the GEICO Top Flight Invite in 2022. For further evidence of how rare that type of scoring was, though, he had just 4 points in the very next game.

Basketball is a game that requires confidence and for Bronny, it matters to see the ball go through that net. It was a low pressure environment in the G League, but that is exactly the kind of atmosphere where he can thrive so he feels ready for the toughest competition at the next level.

While he didn’t do it against an NBA team, he was able to  keep up against some legitimately real competition.

The Valley Suns have TyTy Washington Jr., who was a first-round pick in the 2022 NBA Draft and made SEC All-Freshman at Kentucky. They have Jalen Bridges, one of the top undrafted free agents in the 2024 NBA Draft who was a standout at NBA 2K25 Summer League.

He also stood out in a game that featured Mamadi Diakite (a former NCAA and G League champion who has earned G League All-Defensive honors), Jaden Shackelford (who won a title in the G League last year) as well as Cassius Stanley (a former top recruit also from Sierra Canyon).

Bronny had 14 possessions for South Bay in that game as the pick-and-roll ball handler and 6 more one-on-one against his defender in isolation, via Synergy. For comparison, he had just 19 possessions as the PnR ball handler and 9 in iso during his 25 games at USC.

South Bay put the ball in his hands and he made the most of the opportunity. Is that sustainable? That much is unclear, but any prediction between unlikely and cautiously optimistic is fair.

For his growth potential, however, these reps are invaluable and could go a long way to increase the likelihood of his longevity in the NBA.

There is still a long way to go until Bronny is ready to make a really positive impact in the league, if he ever does at all, but moments like last night make that feel far more attainable.

Why did the Lakers send Bronny James to the G League? Here’s the answer.

This is why you won’t see Bronny with the Lakers.

Los Angeles Lakers rookie guard Bronny James will suit up in the G League for the South Bay Lakers, which was not unexpected.

After sharing the court with his father LeBron on Opening Night and then later scoring his first basket in the NBA, the 20-year-old will also play in the developmental league with the Lakers’ G League affiliate.

It is the correct decision for everyone involved and even has fans excited to check out the South Bay Lakers as his first game is already sold out. But why is the first-year pro no longer playing alongside his father?

BRONNY JAMES: Sending him to the G League is the right move for the Lakers and for him

Bronny will reportedly only play in home games for the South Bay Lakers, alternating his time between the G League and the NBA.

[afflinkbutton text=”Shop South Bay Lakers Tickets” link=”https://stubhub.prf.hn/l/NdBxgzL/”]

While this isn’t necessarily the most logical path for Bronny to split time between the two rosters, his experience with South Bay will have tons of value.

It isn’t uncommon for a second-round pick to predominantly play in the G League, especially for someone who is as young as Bronny who did not get a surplus of collegiate experience in the NCAA.

Bronny James selling out his G League debut is his most impressive accomplishment yet

Bronny James is growing the game in the G League!

Los Angeles Lakers rookie guard Bronny James will play in the G League for the South Bay Lakers, which is the correct decision for all involved.

This is not a punishment but rather the right path for a young player who only recently turned 20 years old and did not have extensive success in the NCAA.

The opportunity to play in the G League is a fantastic chance for a young prospect to develop their game, and it is where most second-round picks with his level of experience begin their professional careers. There is nothing very unusual about a rookie spending time outside of the NBA.

BRONNY JAMES: Sending him to the G League is the right move for the Lakers and for him

What is far more unusual, though, is for a sellout crowd to watch teams play in the G League.

But when the former USC guard makes his debut for South Bay, that is exactly what he will expect as the team announced a capacity attendance with tickets being re-sold for as much as $271 to sit courtside.

[afflinkbutton text=”Shop South Bay Lakers Tickets” link=”https://stubhub.prf.hn/l/NdBxgzL/”]

South Bay ranked last in attendance the season before last, drawing an average crowd of 441 fans per game. The venue has a small capacity of less than 1,000 people, for what it is worth, but drawing any interest to the Lakers G League affiliate is no easy task.

Will Bronny James play in the G League for the South Bay Lakers?

Will Bronny James see the G League in year one?

Bronny James is officially a member of the Los Angeles Lakers after the team selected him in the second round of the NBA Draft Thursday night.

The draft process was more peculiar than usual for the 19-year-old due to his dad being LeBron James and pops making public his desire to play on the same team as his son. That public knowledge muddied any real sense of Bronny’s true draft value and where he would end up.

Now, that some of those questions are answered, the next thing people may be wondering is if James is good enough to hold down a roster spot in year one, or whether he’ll be assigned to the Lakers’ G League affiliate. We already have some clues as to what might happen with that.

Who is the Lakers’ G League team?

Good question, because I’m guessing most of us don’t know many G League teams outside of the ones associated with our own teams.

The Lakers’ affiliate is called the South Bay Lakers. They play their games right in El Segundo, California, at the LA Lakers’ training facility called the UCLA Health Training Center. So if Bronny James does end up there, LeBron could watch him play all the time.

OK, cool, but will Bronny James actually play games for South Bay?

Well, if you believe his agent, the answer is probably not. Or at least not often. Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told Bleacher Report in May that James won’t sign a two-way contract, which allows for players to split time between the NBA and G League.

“Teams know that. I’m not doing that,” Paul said.

In other words, he expects James to be a full-time NBA player his first year. And considering Paul’s relationship with the Lakers and their biggest star, I’m inclined to take him for his word. That doesn’t stop the Lakers from assigning James to the G League occasionally, but he’ll always have a spot on the big league team.

So will he see minutes for the Lakers?

This part is probably a little more open. He’ll definitely see the floor at times, probably in blowouts and garbage minutes. But will he actually crack JJ Redick’s rotation? I’m skeptical about it happening but I guess it’s possible.

It all depends on how he looks in Summer League, training camp and the preseason. If he progresses fast enough, anything is possible. We already know he’ll have a certain somebody in the building pushing him everyday to be the best player he can be.

Jalen Hood-Schifino scored 38 points for South Bay Lakers on Thursday

Lakers rookie Jalen Hood-Schifino has been showing some promise while playing in the G League, and he had a monster game on Thursday.

When the Los Angeles Lakers took Indiana University guard Jalen Hood-Schifino with the No. 17 pick in the 2023 NBA draft, there was plenty of intrigue. While some fans wanted the team to take someone else, such as Cam Whitmore or Jaime Jaquez Jr., Hood-Schifino seemed to be a fine prospect in his own right.

In his lone season in the NCAA, he showed an ability to create his own shot from the midrange area, hit the open man, handle the ball and be a decent defender.

But in spot duty with the Lakers this season, he has looked like a zero-impact player who has had significant trouble merely putting the basketball in the hoop.

There has been a feeling he would be better off spending most of his time in the G League so he could develop and gain some confidence. Well, in 10 games with the South Bay Lakers through Sunday, he averaged 20.1 points and 6 assists a game while hitting 41.3% of his 3-point attempts.

On Thursday, Hood-Schifino had a monster 38-point effort in a 131-126 loss to the Austin Spurs.

Perhaps Hood-Schifino simply needs a more seasoning and time to develop than Whitmore or Jaquez, both of whom have been producing efficiently for the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat, respectively.
