Down Goes No. 1: Twitter reacts to Arkansas’ upset win over KU

“Just like football!!”

If you thought the first round of the tournament had all the drama, you didn’t have to wait long for some more pandemonium.

After leading by 10 points in the second half, Kansas allowed the Arkansas Razorbacks to go on an 11-0 run to take the lead. Ultimately the lower-seeded team held off the defending national champions, 72-71. This is the second time in the 2022-23 college sports calendar Arkansas ended KU’s season. The Razorbacks claimed a thrilling, 55-53, overtime victory in the Liberty Bowl in football.

The Jayhawks had an opportunity to tie the game, but Jalen Wilson inadvertently made a shot that needed to hit the rim and stay out, giving KU a chance to rebound it and get a shot to tie the game with a few seconds left.

As expected, social media was in a frenzy after the game went final.

BRACKET BUSTER: Twitter reacts to No. 15 Princeton upsetting No. 2 Arizona

Welcome to March Sadness. The No. 15 Princeton Tigers busted everybody’s March Madness brackets by upsetting the No. 2 Arizona Wildcats on Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

No. 13 Furman beating No. 4 Virginia wasn’t enough madness for Thursday’s opening day of the NCAA Tournament as the No. 15 Princeton Tigers out of the Ivy League upset the No. 2 ranked Arizona Wildcats 59-55.

Coming into the NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats were coming off a Pac-12 championship and were among the popular picks to make a deep run in the tournament to the Final Four and potentially even a National Championship winning run. Now, like most brackets, that idea has been busted.

Princeton came in with a fantastic defensive game plan, not allowing Arizona to get any strong looks from beyond the arc, and played suffocating defense within the perimeter. The Wildcats shot 42.1% from the floor in the game but were just 3-for-16 from three-point range. After averaging over 80 points per game this season, the Wildcats’ 55 points on Thursday was their season low.

The Princeton Tigers will now move on to the Round of 32 to take on the Missouri Tigers on Saturday. Missouri moved on earlier on Thursday with a 76-65 win over the Utah State Aggies.

This of course isn’t the first time that Princeton has found itself in the NCAA Tournament spotlight. The Tigers back in 1996 as a No. 13 seed upset the No. 4 seeded UCLA Bruins in the Round of 64 by a final score of 43-41. The Bruins were at the time the defending national champions.

Notably, current Princeton head coach Mitch Henderson was a starting guard on that 1995-1996 Princeton team.

Social Reactions: Tulane knocks off Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans in the Cotton Bowl

After taking a 12-point lead early in the fourth quarter, the USC Trojans were outscored 16-3 in their Cotton Bowl loss to Tulane and social media reacted accordingly.

Lincoln Riley strikes again. With a 12-point lead early in the fourth quarter. A field goal with 4:30 remaining in the game gave the Trojans a 15-point lead. Tulane proceeded to score 16 unanswered points, including a safety, to overcome the deficit and knock of the USC Trojans in the Cotton Bowl 46-45.

It was another terrible defensive effort from Alex Grinch’s defense against the Green Wave. Tyjae Spears did his best impersonation of Deuce Vaughn, running for 205 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 12.1 yards per carry in the game.

The Trojans struggled all year on defense, but the offense didn’t help much in the fourth quarter, giving up a safety to Tulane. Heisman trophy winner Caleb Williams and the Trojans were held to a field goal over the final 12 minutes of the game.

This game was reminiscent of several losses the Oklahoma Sooners suffered when Lincoln Riley was at the helm, most notably the Rose Bowl loss to Georgia. But also in a 2020 loss to Kansas State, where the Sooners were outscored by 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Riley’s teams have struggled to close out games over the years, and their Cotton Bowl performance was nothing new on that front.

The Tulane Green Wave pulled off an epic comeback at the expense of Lincoln Riley and the Trojans, and social media reacted accordingly.

Social media reacts to Oklahoma’s 51-48 loss to Texas Tech

What did social media have to say following Oklahoma’s loss to Texas Tech?

The Oklahoma Sooners couldn’t find a week in Big 12 play where the offense and the defense came together simultaneously. In their loss to Texas Tech, it was the defense reverting to the team that gave up 40 points in four straight games to start Big 12 play.

The defense came out hot against the Red Raiders, not really allowing much of anything the first quarter. But once the clock flipped to the second, it was a totally different ball game.

Over the remainder of the game, the Sooners were outscored 51-34 as the defense couldn’t get much of a pass rush going and the coverage struggled to contain Texas Tech wide receivers.

It was a frustrating yet fitting end to the Sooners’ 2022 season. Sure, they have the bowl game to play, but that performance won’t do much to assuage any concerns about this team heading into 2023.

Brent Venables and his staff have a lot of work to do to try to improve the worst defense in the Big 12. Here’s a look back at how social media reacted to the Sooners loss.

Social media reacts to Marvin Mims ridiculous catch against Texas Tech

Marvin Mims is off to an incredible start in the first half against Texas Tech and provided a catch of the year candidate.

Marvin Mims is having an incredible first half against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He just picked up his second touchdown of the game on a 77-yard bomb on a busted coverage by the Red Raiders.

He now has five receptions for 162 yards, which is one-yard shy from tying his career high that he set against Kent State earlier this year. And there’s still more than a half of football to play.

Having a big half of football, Mims had what might end up being the catch of the year.

With the Sooners driving to extend their 14-0 lead, Dillon Gabriel dropped back to pass and threw to Mims on a slant-fade. Mims jumped while being interfered with and reached around a defender to catch the ball.

It set social media ablaze with his fantastic reception, and here are some of the best reactions from the catch and Marvin Mims’ big first half.

Social media reacts to Oklahoma Sooners 28-13 win over Oklahoma State

Social media reacts to the Oklahoma Sooners’ 28-13 win over Oklahoma State in Bedlam.

Brent Venables picked up a win in his first Bedlam game, preventing Mike Gundy from winning back-to-back Bedlams for the first time in his lengthy career in Stillwater.

Despite the yardage allowed, the Oklahoma Sooners defense played a fantastic game, stepping up for an offense that sputtered after a 28-point outburst in the first quarter.

As the offense struggled for three-fourths of this game, the defense made life incredibly difficult for Spencer Sanders and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. They lived in the backfield, totaling six sacks and 13 tackles for loss in the win. They held the Cowboys to just 4.7 yards per play in the win.

The offense’s 28 points ended up being more than enough to win the game as Dillon Gabriel looked surgical, moving the Sooners down the field and hitting big plays in the passing game. A fumble by Brayden Willis and an interception on a throw behind Drake Stoops took points off the board in the second quarter that could have made this an even more lopsided affair.

It could have been an even bigger win for the Oklahoma Sooners, but a win is a win, and we should enjoy them since they’ve been few and far between in 2022. So, with that, let’s take a look at some of the best social media reactions from the Sooners’ 28-13 win over Oklahoma State.

Social media reacts to Oklahoma’s ‘UNITY’ alternate ahead of the Kansas game

Ahead of Oklahoma’s matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks at homecoming, OU released a “UNITY” alternate and social media raved about it.

In the modern world of football, NFL teams and college football programs are looking to create unique ways to change up their look. While tradition remains a key part of college football, the University of Oklahoma found an inspired way to create an alternate uniform that also honors a legend of the program.

Yesterday, the Oklahoma Sooners released their latest alternate uniform, honoring former Oklahoma Sooner Prentice Gautt. Gautt, was the first black scholarship football player in the program, starring at running back for Bud Wilkinson from 1956 to 1959.

The uniform was created to promote unity across the University of Oklahoma campus and the anthracite look matches alternates worn by other programs within the athletic department.

While there are some that don’t care for the idea of Oklahoma Football wearing an alternate uniform, the overwhelming response to the “UNITY” alternate has been positive.

Here’s how social media reacted!

The SEC, CFB world reacts to the Nick Saban-Jimbo Fisher feud

Oh boy…the SEC West was set ablaze on Thursday

From Wednesday night into Thursday morning, the SEC world was set ablaze by Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban for his comments on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL).

While this is the college athletics world we live in, it hasn’t stopped countless people from weighing in on the topic. Saban pointed out that “Texas A&M bought their 2022 recruiting class.” Maybe the SEC should adopt a new motto coined by Fox Sports radio host Colin Cowherd. The SEC was once about “it just means more” and now it seems NIL and the conference should mean “now it’s legal.”

Saban also pointed to top 2022 recruit Travis Hunter and his decision to sign with Jackson State, stating he received $1 million to join head coach Deion Sanders. Both Hunter and Sanders have recently chimed in.

As expected with this kind of story, social media went rampant. We will kick it off with the social media king himself, Lane Kiffin. The man never met a topic he didn’t want to tackle on his Twitter account.

Social Reax: Auburn fans crash the party with UGA’s Twitter post

For the second time Auburn fans let Georgia hear about the loss.

A win is a win.

That is what is important after No. 1 Auburn pulled out a close win over Georgia 74-72. KD Johnson tied it up with under a minute to play and Wendell Green Jr. made a layup with 3.6 seconds left to give Auburn the lead.

With the win Auburn improved to 22-1 overall and 10-0 in the SEC. They also swept Georgia on the season.

Johnson led Auburn with 20 points against his former team and Green added 19 points of his own. Green was put back into the starting lineup with Zep Jasper unable to play due to an illness. His absence was felt, but Auburn was still able to pick up the win and that meant it was time for the fans to unleash their memes.

Auburn fans responded to Georgia’s final score tweet over 2,100 times in thirty minutes. As usual, the content was great, here are some of the best.

Twitter reacts to Odell Beckham Jr news

“OBJ’s dad is gonna love Jared Goff”

After it being rumored for the better part of the last week it finally happened. The Cleveland Browns released Odell Beckham Jr and now he is subject to waivers.

The interesting next move is to see which NFL team will claim the talented wide receiver. It was a wild move to see him released on his 29th birthday but the NFL is a business and that his how these things can go. OBJ should have no shortage of suitors.

It didn’t take long for social media, and more specifically Twitter long to weigh in on the Beckham Jr situation in Cleveland. Former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith weighed in on Baker Mayfield. Plus fans clamoring for their favorite team to claim the former LSU Tiger.
