When the NFL owners were coming together to discuss their offer for a new collective bargaining agreement with players, there was basically no real news coming out of the deal. We didn’t hear about any owners disagreeing with the process. We barely heard what would be in the deal by the time NFLPA leadership got a chance to take a look. It was a united front. As the deadline for the NFLPA to either ratify or decline the CBA offer, the exact opposite is happening with players. Things are getting contentious and frankly, things are getting a bit weird.

It was always going to be harder to show a united front for the players than it would be for the owners. There are 32 people who own NFL teams. There are almost 2000 voting members in the NFLPA. It’s obviously harder to get thousands of people to agree than it is 32. The real problems started where they often do during this period of time: social media.

Star players immediately — and loudly — came out against the CBA on Twitter. Russell Wilson made his opinion known. J.J. Watt said no. The Pouncey twins tweeted out videos using explicit language. It looked like the biggest names in football were using their social media to influence people’s point of view. It makes things for lower-paid players who were going to vote yes when the most powerful players on the team and in the sport of football are voting no and being very loud and public about it. Essentially players were negotiating with their own union members using social media. It’s not great.

Things moved on though, and think pieces were written. Maybe the deal was a good deal for the NFLPA since most of its union membership would actually benefit — even if established veterans and high paid players weren’t getting as much in return. It looked like there would be a vote and a normal procedure would be followed. Which brings us to today.

See, today Russel Okung — who is running for new NFLPA president to replace Eric Winston — decided that he wanted to file an unfair labor practice law and accused the NFLPA of negotiating in bad faith. Yes, the next president of the union is so angry at the current CBA, that he filed a complaint. That’s not great, especially if the labor deal goes through. That’s not where the weirdness stops.

Sam Acho — who also wants to be president of the NFLPA — ended up posting this video in favor of the deal.

Essentially negotiations between the players are going on through social media. It’s not on phone calls, video conferences or meetings. It’s on Twitter. That isn’t professional and it simply doesn’t give the impression that players are going at this in a united manner.

Let’s top it off though. Reportedly, some players now want to change their votes. We don’t know which way they want to change their votes, but they aren’t going to be allowed to do so. The problem with this is the players should have been getting educated before voting. They should have talked to their agents, family, friends, teammates, union members, and business advisors long before voting yes or no. Who got to the players that made them want to change their vote? We will probably never know.

That’s where we are. The good news is we will know by Saturday whether we have a deal or not. Then we will move back to free agency and trying to figure out if Tom Brady is going to sign with every team in the league.

Alex Anzalone shares status update from 2019 shoulder injury

New Orleans Saints linebacker Alex Anzalone said that he’s “Good to go,” on Twitter following a season-ending 2019 shoulder injury.

Finally, just what the New Orleans Saints offseason needed: vague tweets. That’s what we got from linebacker Alex Anzalone, a projected starter who missed the entire 2019 season while recovering from shoulder surgery. Anzalone tweeted out an ambiguous, “Good to go,” message last week, which Nola.com’s Luke Johnson was helpful enough to clarify as confirmation that Anzalone has fully recovered from last year’s procedure and has received the green light to participate in offseason activities.

Anzalone returning is a big win for the Saints defense, at least if he can stay healthy. While there’s no questioning who the best player on the unit is (that’s Demario Davis, the first-team All-Pro considered by some analysts as the best three-down linebacker in football), Anzalone does have a case as the team’s strongest coverage linebacker. He’s a good athlete, but has better instincts and ball skills for the position than many of his peers.

Of course, the big factor here is whether Anzalone can remain on the field. He’s lost two of his first three years in the NFL to injuries after a college career that saw him spend far too much time incapacitated with the Florida Gators. 2020 marks the final year of his rookie contract, and it will be a major litmus test as to whether his body has what it takes to hold up against the punishment that comes with playing professional football.

Watch: All of Cameron Jordan’s career-high 15.5 sacks in the 2019 season

New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan set a personal-best with 15.5 sacks in the 2019 season, all collected in a highlight reel.

Cameron Jordan had a career year with the New Orleans Saints in 2019, just months after he signed a hefty contract extension securing his ties with the team through 2023. Jordan logged a personal-best 15.5 sacks in 16 regular season games (plus another takedown in the playoffs), and you can watch all of them in the supercut shared by the NFL’s official Twitter account, which we’ve embedded below.

Beyond the immediate impact of all those highlight reel-worthy plays, Jordan’s sacks in 2019 caused his career total to rise to second-best in Saints history (87). The only player left for him to pass is Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Rickey Jackson, whose 115 career sacks are the most of any player to ever put on the black and gold.

Two important factors suggest that Jordan may reach that lofty goal. He just turned 30 last summer, putting him squarely in the prime of his playing career. The big defensive end has also bagged 12 or more sacks in each of the last three seasons, with little signs of slowing down. If he can keep up that pace, Jordan will be flirting with Jackson’s all-time record by 2022, when he’ll be 33. And it shouldn’t shock anyone if he end sup meeting it ahead of schedule.

Seattle Seahawks’ Twitter account jumps up to No. 10 in 2020 rankings

Complex Sports recently ranked the Twitter accounts of all 32 NFL teams and the Seattle Seahawks landed at No. 10 in 2020.

The NFL has embraced social media, using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other platforms to reach fans around the world.

The website Complex recently took a look at the Twitter accounts from all 32 teams, ranking the digital marketing efforts from best to worst.

Seattle landed at No. 10 overall.

“The Seahawks are a big climber this year, escalating 14 spots in our rankings,” Complex notes. “This franchise has been consistently great on the fieldā€”no matter what heā€™s working with, Russell Wilson always pulls off some magicā€”and the accompanying Twitter content is starting to fit the bill. A baby Yoda outfitted like Russ? Come on now. Thatā€™s top-shelf, guys.”

“One other thing we like: the Seahawks are behind the city as a whole and promote the other franchises, like the Seattle Sounders,” Complex continues. “They also produce captivating artwork and support important causes like Black History Month.”

The Ravens earned the top spot this year, up from No. 22 in 2019.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees was a celebrity guest at the “Saving by Shaving” event benefiting Boston Children’s Hospital, where he chose to have his head shaved as part of a fundraiser that ultimately raised $7 million.

Other notable participants included Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz and Mass. Gov. Duane Baker Jr, as well as players from the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins. Brees also joined WEEI Radio for an interview before taking his spot in the barber’s chair, where he discussed his future with the Saints and shared his take on Tom Brady’s odds of re-signing with the Patriots.

Brees shared a video on Instagram of his first brush with the hair clippers, which you can see below. He’s the latest Saints player to cut his golden locks for a good cause — Thomas Morstead has regularly grown his hair out before donating it to charities working with pediatric cancer patients, while Sean Payton also shaved his head last summer to support a personal friend.

EA Sports shares ‘Madden’ screenshot of Tom Brady in Broncos uniform

Thanks to ‘Madden,’ we now know what Tom Brady would look like in a Broncos uniform.

The new league year and NFL free agency will begin on March 18 and Patriots pending free agent quarterback Tom Brady will be the hottest name to follow this offseason. It’s hard to imagine Brady leaving New England but there has been speculation that the QB could have a new team in 2020.

EA Sports, the creators of the NFL’s popular “Madden” video game, took to Twitter on Thursday to share of GIF of Brady wearing the uniforms of several different teams, including the Broncos.

Here’s what Brady would look like in orange and blue:

Speaking at the NFL combine last month, Denver general manager John Elway indicated that the team would be open to talking with Brady but they are “pretty happy with Drew [Lock].” Elway seems unlikely to bring in a 42-year-old Brady after a 23-year-old Lock went 4-1 last season.

Oddsmakers have given the Broncos 18/1 odds of landing Brady. We wouldn’t advise taking that bet — Brady is unlikely to land in Denver.

Prince Amukamara responds to fan’s tweet about him potentially joining Broncos

A Broncos fan tweeted that the team should sign Prince Amukamara. Here’s how the cornerback replied.

After agreeing to trade a fourth-round draft pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for cornerback A.J. Bouye, the Denver Broncos are a little deeper at cornerback. The team still needs more depth, though.

There’s a chance that Denver could still re-sign Chris Harris, but it seems like a small chance. If Bryce Callahan can stay healthy this season, he could team up with Bouye to give the Broncos two quality cornerbacks. Denver will want to have three quality CBs.

One fan on Twitter suggested that Prince Amukamara could be the team’s No. 3 cornerback. Amukamara took note of the tweet and replied with eye emojis.

Amukamara, who played under coach Vic Fangio from 2017-2018, was cut by the Chicago Bears three weeks ago. Because he was released, Amukamara is free to sign with any team even before the start of free agency on March 18.

There have been no reports — so far — of the Broncos having interest in Amukamara but the team might be waiting to see how the first wave of free agency unfolds before potentially considering the 30-year-old CB.

Amukamara is a name to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
