10 hysterical snowy moments from the Kansas State-Iowa State game, including ‘snow fans’

SNOW GAME!

Rivalry Saturday on the college football schedule brought forth the annual Farmageddon game between Kansas State and Iowa State, and the weather outside was absolutely frightful (if you hate snow).

The conditions at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas, were incredibly brutal as the temperature was below freezing and the football field covered in snow.

Both Wildcats and Cyclones alike had to battle in the elements as snow kept pouring on the football field and all of the fans in the stands throughout the game.

If you loved snow, it was a dream of a Saturday. If you didn’t, well, you probably opted to stay at home.

This looked like one of the most enjoyable atmospheres of the college football season, as the winter weather (in fall) provided plenty of snowy views for everyone at Kansas State and the viewers at home.

Let’s break down some of the best moments from this snow game.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes added to the Week 8 injury report due to illness

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes added to the Week 8 injury report due to illness

The Kansas City Chiefs have added a very significant name to their injury report ahead of today’s Week 8 matchup against the Denver Broncos. All-Pro starting quarterback Patric Mahomes is reportedly dealing with an illness as the team is set to play in snowy Denver this afternoon.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player is still expected to play later today. He is listed on the injury report but doesn’t have a game designation, clearing any doubts about his availability for the Chiefs’ latest AFC West battle.

“Patrick Mahomes has been battling the flu, source said.” posted Rapoport on his X account. “Better today than yesterday. He’ll play.”

The upbeat report of Mahomes possibly feeling better today is impactful as the Chiefs will deal with some precipitation at Empower Field at Mile High. Over six to fourteen inches of snow covered the city over the weekend as the matchup is expected to be the first snow game of the NFL season.

Broncos vs. Chiefs could be a snow game on Sunday

The Broncos’ showdown with the Chiefs on Sunday could be a snow game.

The Denver Broncos’ showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday could be a snow game.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning in effect until noon on Sunday. The warning calls for “heavy snow” with possible snow accumulations between 4 and 10 inches between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

The Broncos had a snow game against the Chiefs on the road in 2019, a game Kansas City won 23-3. One season later, Denver had snow flurries in a 43-16 home loss to the Chiefs in 2020.

Even non-Broncos fans and non-Chiefs fans have expressed excitement for the possibility of a snow game on Twitter/X.

10 outdoorsy things to do in Hokkaido, Japan

Adventure around Hokkaido.

In Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido, the bear population is growing faster than the human population. Hokkaido makes up 22% of the country’s land area, but its roughly five million citizens account for less than 5% of Japan’s population. That’s good news if you like to get outside and enjoy uncrowded hiking trails, rivers, and lakes. Hokkaido offers almost any landscape you could want, from flower fields in summer to incredible snowfall in winter. And after an active day, you can relax in one of the island’s 251 onsen, or hot springs areas. You might even see a bear. Get inspired for your Hokkaido adventure with this list of 10 outdoorsy activities to try.

Emergency hay drops are on the way for cows stranded in California snow

Hay is on the way!

Operation Hay Drop is on the way to save stranded cows in Northern California. Winter weather conditions in early March have left the region’s cattle stuck and starving. With farmers from Humboldt to Trinity County worrying over how these conditions could impact spring calving season, the California National Guard arranged “emergency hay drops” to keep the animals fed.

“The pilots are looking essentially for tracks in the snow,” Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal told NPR. “They’ll drop the hay in the area where they are, and what they found is [the cows] start coming out from under the trees and going towards the hay as soon as the helicopter takes off.”

These emergency missions, dubbed “Operation Hay Drop,” have been crucial for Northern California ranchers. According to The San Francisco Chronicle, some ranchers have lost 10% of their herds due to the snowy conditions. With no grass on the ground, the hay drops will help keep the cows fed and give them a chance at survival. The project is supporting 40-50 ranchers and roughly 2,500 cattle.

“As long as the weather conditions remain cold and the snow accumulations aren’t melting off, the mission will continue,” Tran Beyea, a spokesperson for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Humboldt-Del Norte Unit, told the Los Angeles Times.

Initial cattle support efforts began with the Coast Guard and gained support from Cal Fire and the National Guard. Operation Hay Drop got the green light on March 5, and the project has assisted ranchers ever since. Many of these ranchers already consider Operation Hay Drop a success.

As Trinity County rancher Robert Puga told NPR, “If it wasn’t for them, I guarantee you 110% there’d be thousands of cattle that are dying. Thousands.”

Light snow expected throughout Jaguars vs. Chiefs playoff game

The snow is falling in Kansas City and it doesn’t look like it’ll stop anytime soon.

When the NBC’s pregame broadcast began for a Divisional Round matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday, the snow was already falling. That’s not expected to end any time soon.

Light flurries of snow are in the forecast in Kansas City, Mo. until the evening long after the game is likely over. If it’s not snow falling, icy rain could be part of the game too.

The Jaguars have dealt with a little bit of adverse conditions during the 2022 season, enduring a cold, rainy, and windy day in Philadelphia early in the season during a game against the Eagles. Their win last week against the Los Angeles Chargers was among the coldest in TIAA Bank Field history.

Still, snow games have been few and far between for the franchise. And that kind of weather hasn’t seemed to bother Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes one bit in the past.

Oddsmakers have expected a high-scoring game at Arrowhead Field with the total at BetMGM set at 53 points.

In California ski town, fast-food restaurant resembles snow cave

A striking image captured in Mammoth Lakes shows a Carl’s Jr. restaurant remaining open despite resembling a snow cave.

The recent series of winter storms, delivered via atmospheric rivers, inundated California mountain towns with historic or near-historic snowfall totals.

And as the digging out continues, businesses are doing their best to cope with the inconvenience, and the accompanying image is perhaps the perfect illustration.

The image, showing the drive-through window at the Carl’s Jr. in the Eastern Sierra town of Mammoth Lakes, was captured Wednesday evening by the Mammoth Times.

The illuminated menu and a plowed and steeply-walled avenue for vehicle access are all that’s visible.

It’s worth noting that Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, farther up the road, has received 381 inches of snow so far this season. That’s 31.75 feet!

In town, towering snow walls line roads that have been plowed repeatedly.

As for the Carl’s Jr. image, Mammoth Times followers played along in the comments section:

–“I’ll have a large Blizzard, please!”

–“There’s a vent for the fryer up there somewhere.”

–”Wadayamean the slushy machine is broken?!?”

–”Can you supersize that in case I don’t make it out?”

One follower tagged one of her friends and commented, “Glad I don’t live there anymore.”

At 9:15 a.m. Thursday, the temperature at the ski area was 18 degrees with clearing skies and high winds. Lower lifts were open but some mid- and upper-mountain lifts remained on wind and visibility hold.

Snow flurries possible in Jaguars vs. Chiefs playoff game

It’ll be another cold one on Saturday with some snow possible.

The Jacksonville Jaguars won a chilly home game against the Los Angeles Chargers over Wild Card Weekend and will likely play in even colder conditions in the Divisional Round.

Early forecasts for Saturday say snow flurries are possible for the Jaguars’ playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

As of Wednesday, The Weather Channel says there’s an 80 percent chance of snow in Kansas City on Saturday with a high of 38 degrees and a low of 29.

Local meteorologists in Kansas City are saying the same:

The Jaguars’ 31-30 win against the Chargers was officially recorded at 45 degrees at kickoff, but dipped into the 30s before the end of the game.

The coldest playoff game in Jaguars history was the team’s 45-42 win on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers in January 2018 with the temperature at kickoff recorded at 18 degrees. Jacksonville also beat the Steelers in a snowy playoff game in January 2008.

The Saints are better in cold-weather games than you think

The Saints may be a dome team, but their record over the last 8 seasons outdoors and in cold weather might surprise you, via @RossJacksonNOLA:

Call the New Orleans Saints what they are: a cold-weather team. Okay, that is obviously not true, given how many games they play inside the climate-controlled Caesars Superdome. But the team’s record when outdoors and in cold winter weather is better than some would have you believe.

Year after year, from the moment the schedule is officially released, the narrative arises that the Saints can not win in cold-weather matchups. Ahead of the 2022 season, the team’s Week 16 and 17 games were quickly circled. In facing the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles on the road, respectively, concerns of cold weather in the hosts’ outdoor stadiums immediately arose. Which are especially commonly brought up around New Orleans, but other dome teams as well.

But the good news is that the Saints met the first of those challenges head-on and secured a 17-10 victory in the process, leaving the Cleveland tundra with a win. But that result is not new for New Orleans. In fact, since 2014, the Saints are 5-1 in outdoor games that are played below 40 degrees Fahrenheit at kickoff. That includes a January playoff win against the Eagles in the 2013 postseason.

The upcoming Week 17 game in the City of Brotherly Love is not expected to be a chilly one. The current forecasts show the temperature is expected to hover in the low 50’s throughout the contest. Given the Saints’ track record over the last 8 seasons, and their recent losses to the Eagles and starting quarterback Jalen Hurts the last two years, perhaps it would better for New Orleans if it were colder.

Wind chill has Cleveland’s Saints-Browns game feeling colder than ‘polar weather conditions’

The wind chill has Cleveland’s Saints-Browns game feeling colder than the South Pole:

Sheesh. The New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns are doing their best to warm up at FirstEnergy Stadium under heavy wind and snow, and yeah, it’s cold. It’s actually so cold with the wind chill, ESPN Stats and Info reports, that the on-field temperature at kickoff (a projected negative-21 degrees Fahrenheit) could be colder than the current temperature at the South Pole (negative-15 degrees).

Yikes. See the conditions for yourself from those on the ground in Cleveland:
