On this day: Celtics deal for Olowokandi; Green, Brooks, Williams born

On this day in Celtics history, the team traded for Michael Olowokandi, and Sly Williams, MarShon Brooks, and Gerald Green were born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise sent wing Ricky Davis, center Mark Blount, guard Marcus Banks, forward Justin Reed, and two second-round picks from the Celtics to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2006.

In exchange for the package of player contracts and draft assets coming from the Celtics, Boston received forward Wally Szczerbiak, big man Michael Olowokandi, power forward Dwayne Jones, and a first-round draft pick. Relatively uneventful as far as impact on the organization in the short term, the trade would have been a footnote in team history except for the fact that it set the stage for the deal which would bring Ray Allen.

And through that move, Kevin Garnett, to Boston the following year.

On this day: Center Jason Collins born; 3rd-lowest scoring Cs game; Sly WIlliams cut

On this day, former Boston Celtics big man Jason Collins was born, and Boston had its third lowest-scoring game in franchise history.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, big man Jason Paul Collins was born in Los Angeles, California back in 1978. Collins played collegiately with the Stanford University Cardinal, with whom he earned NABC Third Team All-American and First Team All-PAC 10 honors in 2001.

He was drafted 18th overall by the Houston Rockets in the 2001 NBA draft but was immediately traded with Brandon Armstrong and Richard Jefferson to the (then) New Jersey Nets for Eddie Griffin. Collins played stints with that team, the Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Atlanta Hawks before he signed with the Celtics as a free agent in 2012.

The Californian played 32 games with Boston before he was dealt to the Washington Wizards with Leandro Barbosa for Jordan Crawford, having averaged 1.2 points and 1.6 rebounds per game with the team.

On this day: former Boston Celtics forward Sly Williams signed

On this day in 1985, the Boston Celtics signed power forward Sly Williams as an unrestricted free agent.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise signed power forward Sylvester Williams as an unrestricted free agent. A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Sly — as he was often called — played for the University of Rhode Island Rams, with whom he earned consensus second-team All-American honors.

The Garbage Man (another nickname of his) was selected 21st overall in the 1979 NBA draft by the New York Knicks. He played four seasons with them before they traded him to the Atlanta Hawks in 1983 for Rudy Macklin and cash. He played two seasons for that club before being waived on Sept. 23, 1985.

Three days later, he signed with Boston.
