Bulls’ Goran Dragic defends Giannis Antetokounmpo from Gilbert Arenas’ slander

Chicago Bulls free-agent addition Goran Dragic defended Giannis Antetokounmpo from Gilbert Arenas’ recent criticism.

Chicago Bulls free-agent signee Goran Dragic had much to say after Slovenia qualified for the EuroBasket quarterfinals on Saturday.

But, it was on something that happened far away from Germany, where Slovenia beat Belgium by 16 points.

Dragic was asked about former NBA star turned shock-value personality Gilbert Arenas going on a tangent recently bashing Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s game during an episode of the “No Chill” podcast.

This was his response:

“Giannis (Antetokounmpo) is the MVP. Gilbert Arenas is not. Was he ever the MVP? I don’t think so. So he can’t talk about Giannis. Giannis won the championship, won the MVP award. He has been the Defensive Player of the Year.”

Arenas said this about Antetokounmpo:

“The media says he’s the best player in the league. Not even close, just stop it. I can look at his game and say he doesn’t understand basketball yet

“He plays the sport, he won a championship, cool. But he doesn’t really understand how to be better, how to train his body.”

Arenas’ endless pursuit of shock value for the sake of being funny or outrageous over the years has made him something of a bad influence at worst and simply a person not worth taking seriously at best. What he’s saying is obviously ridiculous, even if there are reasonable qualms about the way he plays.

As for Dragic, his focus after EuroBasket will be looking to help the Bulls have success in the 2022-23 season.

France’s former Celtics, Fournier, Poirier, can’t stop Slovenia and Doncic’s historic game

A historic EuroBasket performance that saw Slovenian National Team and Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic put up an absurd 47 points.

In an historic EuroBasket performance, Luka Doncic produced an absurd 47 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists to power Slovenia past France, 88-82, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Dallas Mavericks’ star’s performance was too much for the two former Boston Celtics who played in the game for France; former Boston big man Guerschon Yabusele did not play.

Evan Fournier had the better game, compared to Vincent Poirier. Fournier produced 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting, including a very poor 1-of-6 game from beyond the 3-point arc. He added 3 assists.

While Poirier had a more efficient game than the ex-Boston shooting guard, he only added 2 points and as many boards in 5:40 of floor time in the loss.

With the win, Slovenia (4-1) takes first place in Group B play. France falls to 3-2 and retains a thin grip on second place in the group.

“(Doncic is) really good, but when he makes shots like that, it’s tough,” Fournier said after the game via Eurohoops’ Antonis Stroggylakis. “When you give him shots that he makes, then he gets confident, and then it’s hard to stop. You have to do the job early on him. You can’t give him anything easy.”

Dennis Schroder, Daniel Theis’ Germany falls to Luka Doncic’s Slovenia 88-80

The two Celtics alums find their German National Team in a three-way tie for first place in EuroBasket’s Group B.

The German National Team lost to Luka Doncic’s Slovenian National Team 88-80 to fall to 3-1 in EuroBasket play on Tuesday afternoon. Former Boston Celtics Dennis Schroder and Daniel Theis’ find their team in a three-way tie for first place in EuroBasket’s Group B as a result.

Schroder had the better game of the two. The former Boston floor general put up 19 points and 5 assists in slightly less than 30 minutes of floor time. Theis chipped in 8 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist in a little less than 18 minutes of game time.

The former Celtics center got himself into foul trouble in a manner Boston fans can recall all too well, the War on Theis resulted in the Salzgitter native picking up five personal fouls despite his limited time on the court.

The loss — Germany’s first in the group stage of play — means the team needs Slovenia to lose to France for it to have a chance to win the group outright.

Former Boston Celtics point guard Dennis Schroder gets 17 points, 10 assists with Germany vs. Slovenia

Teammates and fellow Celtics alumni Daniel Theis and Moritz Wagner did not suit up for Germany in FIBA play Saturday.

Unsigned free agent and Boston Celtics alumnus Dennis Schroder had an excellent game with his German National Team in a World Cup group stage qualifying game against Luke Doncic’s Slovenian National Team on Saturday.

Schroder, the former Boston floor general, put up 17 points, 3 rebounds, 10 assists and 2 steals in the 90-71 win.

Schroder managed all of that in 27 minutes of floor time, during which he committed three turnovers and one foul. He shot 40% from the field overall and a sizzling 4-of-9 from 3-point range, hitting all three of his attempts from the charity stripe as well.

Fellow Celtics alumni big men Daniel Theis and Moritz Wagner did not suit up in the contest. Both are questionable for EuroBasket play with injuries that have had them on the bench.

On the other side of the court, Zoran Dragic — brother of Goran — scored a single basket for 2 points, a board and a steal.

Zoran never suited up for Boston but was briefly a member of the organization after being included in a deal shortly before being waived in 2015.
