Oklahoma players tried to chug Skyline Chili at midfield to celebrate Cincinnati win, but it didn’t go well

Drinking straight from a can of chili: good or bad?

Cincinnati is known for many things, and Skyline Chili is one of them.

However, the Bearcats saw the city’s beloved chili be hoisted in victory by the Oklahoma Sooners after they defeated Cincinnati 20-6 on the road.

Post-game, Oklahoma’s Jonah Laulu and Dasan McCullough decided to pay homage to Cincy and drink straight out of two cans of Skyline Chili to celebrate getting to 4-0 on the season.

However, both looked very grossed out by drinking from a can of chili and immediately lowered their heads to presumably spit out whatever went in. The celebration was very funny and well-deserved, but the aftertaste probably wasn’t as good if we had to guess.

While we certainly don’t want to besmirch the good name of Skyline Chili, we absolutely do not recommend trying to drink from a can of it.

If these guys really want to take in Cincinnati’s prized chili, they’d be much better off just going to a Skyline Chili somewhere near the stadium after the game.

However, maybe that doesn’t go down as satisfyingly as victorious slurp of on-field chili. Who’s to say.

Mets’ announcer Gary Cohen eviscerated Skyline Chili and made Cincinnati natives mad

“This is supposed to be food that you actually eat.”

We here at For The Win have written about Skyline Chili — the Cincinnati delicacy of chili, beans, onions and cheese usually served over noodles but sometimes on hot dogs, see photo above — a few times, including a 2015 review that deemed it “not bad at all.”

That appears not to be the opinion New York Mets play-by-play man Gary Cohen shares.

While the Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, Cohen watched a video of Skyline Chili being plated and he completed destroyed it, using “disgusting” to describe the chili.

“They put like 10 tons of shredded cheese on there, he added. “And this is supposed to be food that you actually eat.”

We had to share the reaction that came with it:

A reminder that new Bengals QB Joe Burrow has very strong feelings about Cincinnati’s signature Skyline Chili

Joe Burrow is not a fan of Cincinnati’s famous Skyline Chili…

Joe Burrow is a quirky, cool dude with a great arm and swagger to go with it, and Thursday night, he became the No. 1 overall 2020 NFL Draft pick when the Cincinnati Bengals selected him first in the virtual event. But the 23-year-old quarterback has a smoking hot take specifically related to food and his new city.

This is your reminder that Joe Burrow hates Skyline Chili. And he’s well aware that people in Cincinnati might end up hating him right back for this.

Skyline Chili is a Cincinnati favorite from the restaurant of the same name and is often served over a heaping mountain of spaghetti and topped with an obscene amount of shredded cheese or on a hot dog and topped with an obscene amount of shredded cheese.

For The Win’s own review of Cincinnati-style chili in 2015 described it as “actually not bad.”

However, Burrow — who went to high school in Ohio — is not a fan. And he’s said and tweeted exactly that multiple times over the last few years. (As far as For The Win’s search can tell, these are Burrow’s only existing tweets about Skyline Chili.)

But after reiterating how much Burrow hates Skyline Chili, he also said in January that he “might learn to like it, but we’ll see.”

Skyline itself doesn’t seem to care and was, at least a few months ago, ready to welcome Burrow to town. That’s probably still true now that he’s officially the No. 1 overall pick.
