Knicks vs. Sixers: Former Warrior Kelly Oubre Jr. eliminated with loss in Game 6

Oubre Jr. tallied 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field during the Sixers’ Game 6 loss to the Knicks.

Shortly after Kevin Durant’s season came to an end with a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, another former member of the Golden State Warriors has been eliminated from the postseason.

With another heroic performance from Jalen Brunson, the New York Knicks advanced to the second round of the playoffs, while ending the Philadelphia 76ers’ run in six games.

Kelly Oubre Jr. is the latest former member of the Warriors to hit the offseason early. The former Warrior-turned-76ers wing tallied 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field to go along with five rebounds, a steal, a block, and an assist in 43 minutes. Oubre Jr. also knocked down a trip of 3-pointers against the Knicks on Thursday night. Oubre Jr. trailed only Buddy Hield in the +/- category with +8.

In six games against the Knicks, Oubre Jr. averaged 13.1 points in round one of the postseason.

Yet, the Knicks still had no answer for Brunson. The Villanova product posted 41 points on 13-of-27 shooting from the floor to go along with 12 assists and three rebounds in 44 minutes. Brunson tallied 39 or more points in four straight games for the Knicks.

The Knicks will move on to face the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the playoffs.

Sixers escape with narrow 90-87 win over Knicks

Tobias Harris hit a go-ahead 3 and the defense made it stand up as the Sixers got a much-needed road win over the Knicks.

The road has not been kind to the Philadelphia 76ers this season, and it looked like they might be on their way to another disappointing road loss Saturday night before Tobias Harris and the defense saved the day.

The first quarter proved to be a sign of how this game would play out. The teams traded jabs, with the Knicks leading by as many as two and the Sixers leading by as many as five before settling the period with Philly holding a 28-25 advantage.

Early in the second quarter, it looked like the Sixers may be asserting themselves, building a 10-point lead. But the Knicks responded, coming back to tie the game with 3:12 to play in the half. Philadelphia was able to end the quarter on a 7-1 run, reestablishing a six-point lead at the break.

New York got the better of things in the third quarter, winning it 23-18 and setting the stage for a nail-biting fourth quarter.

The teams played within four points of each other through the early part of the quarter before the Sixers pushed their advantage to seven at the 6:45 mark on a Tobias Harris and-one. It was looking good for the Sixers, but they proceeded to go scoreless for over four minutes, allowing the Knicks to get within one before Al Horford finally broke the drought.

The Knicks kept coming and took the lead on a Marcus Morris jumper with 31 seconds left. The Sixers answered with a Tobias Harris 3, then played suffocating defense on the ensuing possession, getting a trap near the sideline and eventually forcing a turnover. Furkan Korkmaz hit 1-of-2 from the line, Morris missed a last-second heave, and the Sixers escaped.

Ben Simmons led the way with 21 points while Josh Richardson added 18 and Tobias Harris chipped in 15, including the game-winner. Korkmaz followed up his career-high night against the Bulls on Friday with another 17 points. Al Horford only had four points and shot 2-of-9, but he hit that huge jumper to break the drought when the Sixers desperately needed it.

On the surface, the win doesn’t feel particularly encouraging. The Sixers struggled to dispatch a team that entered the game with an 11-31 record, continuing to struggle both on the road and against teams that you would expect them to beat handily.

However, a closer look paints a brighter picture. First, at this point, any win on the road, no matter how ugly, is a huge plus for this team. Just as importantly, the Sixers didn’t let offensive struggles, particularly in the fourth quarter, effect their defensive focus and intensity, something they’ve struggled with at times this season. The Sixers held the Knicks to 39.8% shooting and made plays down the stretch.

Regardless, the Sixers will certainly take it. They’ve now won three straight and snapped a six-game road losing streak. They will try to build on the win in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee Monday in Brooklyn.

Ben Simmons leads Sixers past Knicks 109-104

The Sixers were able to pull out a win over the Knicks during an eventful night at Wells Fargo Center.

Wednesday night’s game between the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks was eventful, to say the least.

Ben Simmons provided a jolt of energy in the first quarter when he knocked down his first career 3-pointer. A disastrous third quarter almost doomed the Sixers, who saw a two-point lead turn into a 17-point deficit. And ultimately, the team was able to overcome that margin and earn a 109-104 win.

The first half was punctuated by the Simmons 3, but despite the electricity created from the moment, the Sixers weren’t able to distance themselves from the Knicks, taking just a two-point lead into the break.

Then the aforementioned third quarter happened. New York opened the half with a 15-0 run, establishing a 13-point advantage that would get as high as 17 with 4:15 left in the quarter. But the Sixers responded, going on a 14-2 spurt of their own to close the quarter, pulling within five.

The Sixers pulled even at 82 with 9:26 left in the game on a Joel Embiid dunk before a free throw from the big man put them ahead half a minute later. A Mike Scott 3 put the Sixers up for good with just under five minutes to go as they were able to keep the Knicks at arm’s length down the stretch.

Ben Simmons was fantastic, and not just because of the made 3. He finished with 18 points, 13 assists, and seven rebounds while committing just a single turnover. Just as importantly, it was Simmons who set the tone defensively to spark the comeback.

Before we get to the rest of the starters, we need to talk about the bench because they too played a huge role in the team’s turnaround. Mike Scott, James Ennis III, and Trey Burke all made a positive impact for the Sixers. Scott hit four incredibly important 3’s on the way to 12 points, adding four rebounds and a block. Burke and Ennis brought excellent energy and made some key plays as well. Burke finished with nine points, two assists, and a rebound while Ennis contributed 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a block. It’s fair to wonder if the Sixers are able to complete this comeback without the contributions from that trio.

Going back to the starters, Joel Embiid led all scorers with 23 points, adding 12 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks.

Tobias Harris chipped in 14 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Al Horford struggled, shooting just 3-11 for seven points. He also had six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block.

Furkan Korkmaz started in place of the injured Josh Richardson and struggled mightily, scoring two points and dishing one assist while missing all four of his 3-point attempts.

Matisse Thyblle chipped in seven points, two rebounds, two steals, and an assist while Shake Milton had six points and four rebounds.

The start of the third quarter was concerning, and the Sixers perimeter defense left something to be desired as the Knicks shot 52% from beyond the arc. However, it was great to see the Sixers respond and get the win. Adding to the positive, the Sixers committed just 10 turnovers and assisted on 30 of 39 made baskets.

Again, the Sixers will need to limit the kind of lapses we saw in the third quarter, but hopefully, the turnaround showed them the kind of energy they need to bring consistently and what they can be when they do so.

At the end of the day, a win is a win and the Sixers will certainly take this one. They are now 9-5 on the season and a perfect 5-0 at home. They’ll put that record on the line Friday when they host the San Antonio Spurs.
